Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
DUNCAN C. HARTMAN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 111,842, dated February 14, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUNCAN G. HARTMAN, of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved DeodOrizingGommOde; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a water-tight box, drum, or cylinder, having a seat-hole in one end capable of being closed water-tight, and the box so arranged as to receive either a reciprocating or a rotating motion, and being about half filled with absorbing or deodorizing material, with which the excrement will become thoroughly mixed by the reciprocating or rotary motion, and when desired the whole may be redried and pulverized without removal from the box or cylinder.
To enable others to make and use my inventiOn,I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is a box Or cylinder, constructed of cast iron or other material, from iit'teen inches to twO feet in diameter each way, more or less, O11 one end of which is a wooden seat, B, with a seathole opening into the box or cylinder. Between the head of the cylinder and the wood B is the metallic slide E, covering the oriiice into the cylinder. This is pressed down tight by the cover C, jointed at F, and fastenin g by a clasp at Gr, and having its under side lined with guttapercha Or rubber D.
Figure 3 represents a rotating frame, K, having in its sides holesi h j to receive the screws l H J. (Shown in Fig. 1.) The cylinder A, being hung in the frame K by the screws I and J, can be retained in an upright position by inserting the hook L in thehole h of the frame K. The cylinder is fastened horizontally in the frame K by the screws already mentioned, together with screw H, inserted through the hole, hung in theframe K. In this position it can be rotated so as to mix or to pulverize the mass within. Across the bottom of the cylinder A is placed a half-round strip, M. The cylinder, resting upon this, is capable of receiving a sudden reciprocating motion, by which the material within can be mixed, but not as thoroughly as by the process above described.
The contents of the cylinder can be redried without removal by taking oi' the wooden seat, placing the box over a tire, screwing on a pipe over the Oriiice of the top to communicate with the lue to convey the escaping gases into the chimney.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The water-tight cylinder A, constructed as described, having the rocker M on the bottom, and the cover G, as set forth.
D. C. HARTMAN.
