Be it known that I, Peres J. SERUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at h/lonaca, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Making Thread-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention consists of an improvement in mechanism for making thread protectors or similar articles from longitudinal cylindrical sections of metal tubing, and has for its object particularly to form devices of this kind for the purpose of making thread protectors, of the type disclosed in the prior patent of Apr. 523, 1912. The dies for forming the device consist of a lower, preferably stationary, die 9 and an upper vertically movable die 3(l, adapted to be mounted in and actuated by the reciprocating head A. of a suitable press. The lower die 2 is provided with a bowlshaped cavity l. of a diameter adapted to receive the end of the blank a, rounded inwardlv toward the center. whereby to force the edge oi the blank inwardly as it is pressed downwardly by the upper c0mpound die 3-6. Centrally of die 6 and extending upwardly through head'A is a knock-out rod 13 having at its lower end a knock-out disk or abutment It and at its upper end a limiting nut or collar l5. An arresting bar 16 e2:- tends through a clearance opening 117 in head it, against which the upper end of rod 13 strikes, as the finished article is raised oy the upper die and the holding action of the compressed ring around teal ll, ltod 13 being thus arrested, disk it engages against the inwardly lmrned flange d, forcibly detaching the finished article from the central die, as in Fig. 3,, allowing it to drop 0d, leaving the machine ready for the next operation. llfhen the dies are brought together, the opposite end portions of the blank will be drawn inwardly, the maximum diameter of the blanlr being substantially retained in the crown oi the bulging portion 0. lit will he understood that the size, proportions, and other elements of the dies are to he designed for each particular size, shape, and gage or protector, and that the operation may he performed in connection with any suitable forming mechanism having other details of construction, within the province of the chilled mechanic.
Having described my invention, what l claim is:
l; Die mechanism comprising a series of dies movable relatively toward each other and embodying a terminal pair of dies adapted while maintaining the normal diameter or? a tubular hlenlr to terminally constrict and endwise swsge one end of the hlanlr while its opposite end is being constricte'd by an opposing die of said series.

Die mechanism for swaging openended tubular blanks, comprising oppositely acting dies, one of said dies having a circular bowl-shaped cavity, and the other having a daring circular opening confronting said cavity movable concentric portion provided with a reduced shouldered co-acting interior swaging terminal, substantially as set forth.

Die mechanism for swaging openended tubular blanks, comprising oppositely acting dies, one of said dies having a circular bowl-shaped cavity, and the other having a daring circular opening confronting said cavity and a central longitudinally movable concentric co-acting swa'ging portion, and kicker mechanism for removing the finished article, substantially as set forth.
