Be it known that I, CHARLES ALBERT DIES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a newy and Improved Method of Making Pipe-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 to 7 show in section the steps employed in making the coupling ring or p nut of the coupling: in Fig. 1 the blank in position for the rst forming operation; in Fig. 2the blank after the first operation; in Fig. 3 the blank being ejected from the dies; in Fig. 4 the blank in position for the second forming operation; in Fig. 5 the blank after the second forming operation; in Fig. 6 the blank ready for the final operation; and in Fig. 7 the couplingv ring ormed in final shape. Fig. 8 is a section on lines VIII-VIII of Fig. 7, showing the hexagonal shape of the die; Fig. 9 is a section of the coupling nut, and Fig. 10 is an elevation thereof. Figs. 11 to 15 show the various steps employed in making the Spud or head-piece: in Fig. 11 the blank ready for the first termin operation; in Fig. 12 the blank after the iirrst forming operation; in Fig. 13 the blank in position for the second forming operation; 1n Fig- 14 the blank after the second operation is completed; and in Fig. 15 the nal operation and the spud or head-piece in linal form. Fig. 16 shows a section of the spud or head-piece, and Fig. 17 an elevation thereof. Figs. 18-19 show the nal forming operation of the tailpiece (the rst two operations being similar to those shown in Figs. 1 7): in Fig. 18 the blank is in position for the final operation, and in Fig. 19 the nal operation and the completed tail-piece. Fig. 20 is a section of the tail-piece and Fig. 21 is an elevation thereof. Fig. 22 shows in section the complete coupling.
My invention relates to pipe couplings or pipe unions, and is designed to provide a coupling or union made from sheet metal or seamless tubing. My improved union is exceedingly durable, is adapted for very high pressures, is very efficient in service, and at the same time is economical from the standpoints of cost and longevity.
Referring to the drawings, and rst to the formation of the coupling nut, A is the Speoioation of Letters Patent.

which rests on the pilot 2 and between the jaws 3,0f the die 4. The die 4 is recessed to permit the reception of the punch 5, and located in this recess 6 is the dieplate '7, which acts as an ejector and is operated by the pins 8. The punch 5 has a circular opening 9 having a diameter somewhat larger than theY diameter of the pilot 2 of the die 4 to provide room for the admission of, and the shaping of the blank A therebetween. In the opening 9 the knock-out 10 operates and is reciprocated on a shaft 11.
In Fig. 4 the die 12 has an ejector ring 13, the upperA face 14 of which is beveled from its outer edge toward the centrally located pilot 15.. The co-acting punch 16 has its surface 17 ,beveledto correspond to the bevel of the face 14 of the ring 13. 18 is the knock-out of the punch 16.
In Figs. 6 and 7 the die 19 has a central aperture 20 which permitsthe discharge of the cut-out portions of the metal. Around the mouth of ,this aperture 20 the die 19 is recessed to ail'ord a seatin surface 21 for,
ing to the face of the pilot 28 and its lowerportion 29. 34 is the knock-out of the die 31. In Figs. 13 and 14 the anvil 35 has a central opening 36 having' a restricted lower portion 37 in which is located the ejector 38. The face 39 of the anvil 35 isinclined inwardly and upwardly from its outward edge toward the opening 36. The die 40 has the outer face 41 of the knock-out 42 inclined inwardly and upwardly to correspond to the face 39 of the anvil 35, and a centrally disposed depending punch 43 with narrow lower portions 44, and a cutting face 45 which cuts out the bottom of the blank B.
In Fig. 15 the holder 46 has a recess 47 in which is located the anvil 48 having a narrowed upper pilot portion 49 and beveled surface 50 therebetween. The anvil D STATES PATENT. or 10E. j

blank, preferably a sheet of rolled steel, 48 also acts as an ejector. The die 51 has a 110 piece and having the surface c with which the lip a3 of the coupling nut is intended to coact. The die 58 is then retracted and the tail-piece C is then freed by the operation of the ejecting ring 5l, and the article is in the final form shown in Figs. 20 and 2l.
The three members are then threaded, and, if desired, the outer ends of the Spud and tail-piece may be upset as shown in Fig. 22.
ln the herein described method of automatically forming pipe couplings by cold stamping or swaging, I first draw a metal Vsheet into the form of a seamless cup or tubing, then reduce the tubing by compression, upset and aperture it, and finally compress it into the desired form. Obviously, the order of these operations may be changed at will, although it is not desirable to draw the metal except in the preliminary forming operation. Other changes may also be made by those skilled in the art in the form of the article and the process of making same described and shown herein, without departing from my invention.
What l claim is:
l. The process of making pipe coupling parts, which consists in cold working a blank by a series of die-reducing operations into a flanged tubular blank, then by longitudinally applied compression bending and compressing the flange downwardly against the exterior of the blank as a reinforcement therefor', and swaging a compressed seat at the juncture of the blank and flange as a bearing1 for another member of the coupling.
2. T e process of making pipe coupling parts, which consists in :forming a flat sheet metal blank into tubular form and in danging one end thereof, bending the flanged portion of the blank outwardly and compressing it downwardly by longitudinally applied compression against the exterior-of the blank, so as to present a wall directed axially of the blank and acting as a reinforcement for the body of the blank adjacent the juncture of the ange and the body, and swag'ing a compressed seat at such juncture as a bearing for another member of the coupling.
