.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn ELPnnnms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Filing Machines; of which the following is a specification. y i
This invention relates to what I shall for convenience term a filing machine, one of the primary objects of the invention being to provide substantial and compact means for sustaining a driving shaft and an adjustable tool support which is mounted on said shaftas a center.
Another object is. the provision of guide means by which the movement of the tool through a straight path is insured.
Another object is the provision of means by which the work can be accurately and adjustably held with respect to the file or equivalent tool.
The machine :possesses other features of novelty and advantagewhich withthe foregoing will be stated at length in the following description wherein I set forth in detail that form of embodiment of the invention which I have selected for illustra tion in thedrawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification,

The framework for supporting the different parts of the machine may be of anv suitable character that shown involving the base or bed 2 and the bearing or upright 3 rising therefrom, the latter being equipped with an overhanging arm 4.
As intimated the machine may be used in various connections, although it is of particular utility when employed for filing, for which reason the title hereinbeforc given has beenaclOpted. The file or equivalent toolis givena reciprocatory motion. and any suitable means may befurnished for this purpose, the shaft5 answering satisfactorily in this connection and being supported at its outer or rear end in a suitable openingin the overhanging arm 4 constitilting a convenient bearingmember and having a suitable driver such as the band wheel 6 fastened thereto. The arm 4 is provided at its outer end with an annular flange magma which the d sk or bracket 9 fits flatwise. the flange and disk being aplproximatelv of equal diameter. a This provides asubstantial bearing, for the disk 9 transverse to its axis of oscillat on. said disk rocking whenbeing adjusted, on the shaft 5 as a pivot and also in the arm 4 when the stud 10 also acts as a ivot. The bracket 9, therefore. has a double bearing, and it in turn sustains the shaft 5, so that no independent bearing is necessary in this pa t cular connection.

What I claim is:
1. In a machine of the class described the combination of a support adjustable about an axis, a reciprocatory tool carrier on said support, a guide for the tool normally rigidly connected with said support, and a second guide for the tool mounted independently of the support and adjustable to conform to the position of the guide on the support on the adjustment of said support.
2. In a machine of the class described,
the combination of a support adjustable about an axis, a reciprocatory tool carrier on said support, a guide normally rigidly connectedwith said support and the active portion of which consists of an anti-friction roller, and an adjustable slide, sustained independently of said support and also constituting a guide, the active portion of the slide consisting of an anti-friction roller.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a bearing, a support having a counterbore and having an inwardly extending hollow pivot, the hollow of which opens into said eounterbore, the pivot being supported by the bearing to provide for the angular adjustment of said support, a tool carrying slide on said support, a shaft extending through the hollow pivot and into said counter-bore, the shaft being also sustained by said bearing, and having a head in said eounterbore and means connected with said head for reciprocating said slide.
