, class of railroad ties'wherein specific means are provided for securely holding the rails thereto. I
An ob ect of my invention is to provide a device of the above character wherein areprovided detachable receiving means holding the rails in place.
' Another object of my invention is to provide a rail tie constructed preferably of concrete thereby reducing the costand device of this nature to a minimum.
Another object is to provide a concrete tie from which project, at diametrically opposite points pairs of rail supporting members for making a more substantial bed for the rail. y
Broadly my invention consists of a tie having a substantially wedgeshaped opening provided therein which receives correspondingly formed blocks, the latter being provided with means for receiving fastenfor ing members of the rails. Rail. supporting members project at diametrically opposite polnts from the tie so as to form a sub-.
stantial bed for the rails andby their provision it is apparent that the efiiciency of my invention is greatly added to.
With the above and other objects in view,
my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be' hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several.vie\\s, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective viewof my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings,
- HE STAEEiPAQIENT QFFIGE- wherein Spedificationof Letters l atent A isillustrated the preferred form of my invention, the-numeral 1 designates the tie or body portion of the device which is preferably forined fromiconcrete or a material of the like consistency thereof reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum. Formed shaped openings-2 the smaller mouth of which is disposed at the outer face of the tie so that they may receive correspondingly formed blocks 3, the latter having pairs of internally screw threadedopenin sd provided therein for the reception 0 the fastening members of the rails, not shown. By this arrangement it will be apparent that as the tie is disposed upon a solid base all danger of the blocks working loose is obviated, for they cannot be removed from the upper face of the tieas isapparent.
Rail supporting members 5 project at diametrically oppositepoints from the tie and adjacent the openings therein, the supportingmembers of one tie being disposed adjacent or in alinement with the supporting membersiof the other tie so that a secure and compact basis is provided for therails.
I desire to lay the greatest of'stress upon the simplicity of my invention and it is thoughtthat the advantages and novel features of the same will be readily compre-- the arrangement and combination of the severalv parts. provided such changes fallwithin the scope of the subjoined claim.
' Having thus 'fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :y
A rail tie including a body adapted to extend transversely of the railway, elongated projections extending laterally from the opposite margins of said body and in spaced relation to the opposite ends of the latter, the terminals of said projections adapted to abut the proximate terminals of analogous projections to provide acontinuous rail engaging surface, said body provided with openings tapering inwardly from the lower face of said b0113 t0 ha upper face thereof, said openings being farmedin proximity to'the opposite ends 01 saifi body coincident with the longitudisbhe rail, said blocks faces flush with the 0 1 1 bsy, 'substantiaily as sp ifiefi.
