ADJUSTABLE DECK FOR STOCK-CARS.
Application filed May 11, 1911.
To all whom e'finuz-y concern 1 Be it known that 1, ROBERT H. GLYMER, citizen of the United States, residing at Anaconda, in the county of Deerlodge and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Decks for Stock-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement for stock cars and particularly to a deck or platform mounted within the same and adjustable in a manner and for a purpose which will be subsequently pointed out.
It is my object to provide a deck of this type which will double the capacity of the car.
Another object of my invention is-to provide a deck which may be adjusted into po sition during the sheep season and which, when the season is over may be lowered so as not to interfere with the other uses of the car. Y
A further object of my invention is to provide a deck which will be simple in construction, durable and economical of manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a stock car of usual construction. Plates 2 are countersunk in the floor of the car 1 into which are stepped threaded shafts 3. The shafts 3 are angularly formed at their up- Specification of Letters Patent.

per extremities for the reception of a wrench or suitable tool whereby turning of the same may be effected. Straps 4 are passed about the shafts 3 and secured upon the sides of i the car for maintaining the shafts in an upright position close thereagainst. Fitted over and adapted to threaded engagement with the shafts 3, traveling nuts 5 are attached upon the outer of a plurality of channel beams 6. Cross beams 7 are suitably secured across beams 6 thus forming the skeleton of my improved deck which may be strengthened by braces 8 of any adaptable form.
' From the above it will readily be seen that this structure is snugly fitted into the interior of the car, as disclosed to advantage in Fig. 1, and is adjustable upon the shafts 3'through the medium of the traveling nuts 5. The provision of'a suitable floor, laid upon this frame in a manner well known to the art will be fully appreciated to complete a novel and highly useful adjustable deck. The disclosure thus far contains the elements of a new and readily operable device for accomplishing the objects heretofore set forth. Yet, taking into considera tion the enormous weight to which a structure of this character would be likely to be subjected and the jarring resulting to the same from the motion of the car, the'screw shafts 3 will be found to form but inadequate supports. For the purpose of sustaining the deck in secure operative position the following means have been devised. Rods 9 having therein apertures 10 are pivoted upon suitable bolts 11 within the downwardly turned flanges of the channel beams 6. Adapted to telescopic engagement with the rods 9, tubular standards 12 are provided with apertures 13. Suitable means may be passed through the registering apertures of said rods and standards to maintain the supports at any desired adjustment.
Fig. 5 illustrates a support in operative position showing in dotted lines the folded position of the same and the curve described by the same when forced up between a channel beam where it snugly fits and is frictionally held. Fig. 6 discloses another advantageous view of this detail which is at right angles to Fig. 5 and shows the position taken by the support when folded and placed within the beam.
The operation of my device may be conducted as follows: When it is desired to raise the deck for the purposes set forth the operator or operators by dint of the appli cation of a wrench to the upper ends of the shafts 3 efi ect the upward traveling of the nuts 5 thereupon. This motion of the nuts necessarily the motion of the platform as both are positively and securely united. l-Vhen a desired height is reached the operators descend into the lower compartment of the car and disengage the supports from their rest between the channel beams. T he standards 12 are lowered until contact with the floor is had whereupon bolts or suitable 'lt'astening means are passed between the apertures 10 and 13 thus securing; the supports in firm position for sustaining the weight of the deck. When all 01"- the supports are in position the weight is eased otli' the shafts 3 and devolves upon the supports.
I desire it to be understood that slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several arts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a stock car structure, a stock car body, a vertically movable deck therefor having lower channel shaped portions, threaded deck elevating and guiding rods rotatively journaled on said car body, nuts carried by the deck and having threaded engagement with said rods for elevating; the decl; on rotation of said rods, longitudinally extensible supports pivoted within said channel pertions and proportioned to be trictionally held therein at least flush above the lower margins of said channel portions, and a device for each support for locking; the same in different extensible adjustments when the supports are withdrawn from said channel portions into vertical positions for supporting the deck, substantially as described.
