UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS WIGHT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOB TO FRANK TILK ORNA- MENTAL IRON WORKS (30., OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
STREET-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Application filed November 14, 1912. Serial No. 731,388.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Markers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to street markers, and more particularly to a sign adapted for use in connection with an electrolier, the principal object of the invention being to provide a sign which may be effective both by day and by night.
More specifically the invention consists in providing the shaft of an electrolier with a panel bearing thename of a street, and with lamps, preferably electrical and in circuit with the main lamp, whereby the name panel may be illuminated when the main lamp is lighted.
In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is an elevation of a street electrolier, showing the upper portion of the shaft provided with a street marker. Fig. II is an enlarged vertical section of part of the shaft, showing the marker panel and the means for illuminating same. Fig. III is an enlarged cross section of the paneled portion of the shaft. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail perspective of part of the shaft and panel. showing the means for holding the panel in place. Fig. V is a circuit diagram.
Referring more in detail to the parts: 1 designates a hollow shaft, of any pattern or design. adapted for supporting a street lamp 2, preferably of an electrical type and fed through circuit wires 3. which run through a conduit 4 located within the shaft.
In the body of the shaft is an opening 5 adapted for receiving a sign panel 6, preferablv of glass and curved to correspond with the curvature of the post, the sides of the opening being provided with inner flanges 7, which are preferably cast integral with the shaft and serve as stops for holding the panel from falling inwardly, and keeper straps 8 which are secured to the post at the sides and top and bottom of the opening, preferably by screws 9, in order to hold the panel in place.
The sign panel may be either of ground glass, having lettering thereon so as to show dark letters on a light back ground when the interior of the post is lighted, or the reverse, as either arrangement will meet the requirements of the invention, which is to provide a street marker which will be clearly visible both by night and by day.
In order to illuminate the panel at night I place one or more lamps 10 within the post, immediately back of the marker panel. When the lamps are of an electrical type, the sockets 11 may be mounted on a plate 12 adapted to seat between lips 13 on the inner face of the shaft, and the circuit wires 14 therefore constitute branches of the line wires 3 which supply the mainlamp, so that all the lamps may be in the same circuit and the panel lamps be illuminated when the main lamp is lighted. It is apparent that the branch wires may lead through collars 15 on the conduit 4.
With this construction, the panel may be easily installed, or removed, to provide access to the lamps 10, and the lamps may be inserted or removed through the opening 5 when the panel is out.
Having thus described my invention,what
I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a street marker, a hollow shaft, having an opening therein, a panel located within the opening, a socket plate removably mounted within the shaft, and lamps carried by said plate and adapted for illuminating the panel.
2. In a street marker, a hollow shaft having an opening therein and having paired lips in its inner surface, a panel located within the opening, a socket plate removably mounted between said lips, and a lamp carried by said socket plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my'signature in presence of two witnesses.
' THOMAS WIGHT.
