VALVE.
Application led September 9, 1913. Serial No. 788,887.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD S. STONE, a citizen of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in 1Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a valve designed particularly for use in automobile engines, and constructed to include a section designed for cooperation with the seat and constructed of cast iron, the use of which materially insures the prolonged effective life of the valve without regi-incline.
rlhe main object of the present invention is the provision of a valve in which the respective sections are assembled and construe-tec., in t manner to permit the use of the cast iron valve section without placing said section under strain in its application in the t valve structure, as under such strain the section would be liable to crack when it became heated.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specication, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective v iew of the improved valve. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through same.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved valve is made up to include three distinct parts, a main section 1, Aa valve section 2, and a clamping section 3. i
The main section comprises a head 4 of circular outline in plan and convexed upper surface as shown, from which head section centrally depends a circular 'projection 5 er.- teriorly threaded, preferably with threads of ine pitch. From the section 5 centrally depends an elongated reduced extension 6 forming a stem of the valve and preferably provided near its lower end with a diametric opening 7 to receive a Cotter pin for supporting the lower end of the usual rcseating spring.
rlhe valve section comprises a cast iron member 8' of annular form and interiorly threaded to coperate with the threaded projection 5, the exterior or outer edge of the valve section being formed with a valve sur face 9 to coperate with the valve seat. The clamping section f comprises an annular member adapted to be forced on to a shank Specification of Letters Patent.
and to underlie and bear against the valve section, the outer edge l0 of the clamping section being of such form as to arrange said surface wholly within the plane of curvature of the valve face 9 of the section 2. 60
The sectiens i and 3 are preferably of steel, while the valve section 2 is of east iron. Through the'use of this material, the valve surface will not become pitted as repeatedly as if steel were used, so that the valve will not require regrinding as frequently as under other conditions. To provide for manually turning the valve when necessary for clearing the surface i forni centrally in the head 4 a diametric kerf il in which a screw 70 driver or other appropriate tool may be inserted for the convenient turning of the valve.
It is one of the important objects of the present invention to so apply the cast iron section in the valve structure that no strain whatever will be put upon said section during application, and for this reason it is threaded in place 'through a comparatively fine thread connection. Therefore as such o section is without strain, there will be nc liability of its cracking under its necessary heating in use.
A valve including a main section comprising a head having a convex upper siufaf l to present an extremely narrow peripheral edge, a diametrically reduced efteriorly threaded projection depending from the head, and a stem depending ce trally from said projection, a r section formed with a three coperate with said thread said valve section having an e `rior diameter uniformly decreased from the upper to the lower surface, the diameter of the upper surface being coincident with the maximum diameter of the head, and a clamping section frictionallj' engaging the stein and bearing against the threaded projection and valve section, the maximum diameter of the clamping section being coincident with the minimum external diameter of the valve section.
In testimony whereof I affix my in presence of two witnesses.
BERNRD S. STONE.
