T0 all Iwhom it may concern Be it .known that l, GEORGE 1V. HIMLnR, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Latrobe, in the county of lVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which thefollowing is a specification.
rThis invention relates to locks.
The object of this invention is the provision of a lock which eliminates the necessity of the use of springs or other like resilient actuating mechanism.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a lock in which the locking bolt thereof is operated by a sliding weight disposed within the lock casing.
A further object of this invention is the provision of latch mechanism which is adapted to prevent the retraction of the locking bolt without the use of a key.
A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.
YVith the above and other objects in View this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved lock showing the opposite side of the mechanism to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 'a-n of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 6 designates in general my improved lock, which consists of a lock casing 7 of substantially rectangular formation, having a removable plate or closure 8 by means of which access can be had to the casing and the lock mechanisin contained therein. An operating weight 9 of substantially rectangular formation having a forked extension 10 is slidable within said casing. This operating weight 9 is provided with a vertically extending central slot 11 for engagement with a boss 12 formed upon the casing and providing a means for the attachment of the closure plate 8. An additional slot 13 is formed in said sliding weight 9 adjacent the slot 11 for the reception of the bearing 14 of a double knob lever 15, which permits the vertical movement of said weight 9 without interfering therewith. This knob lever 15 is provided with oppositely extending arms 16, which engage a shoulder 17 provided upon said weight 9 and upon the rotation of the knob not shown in the drawing) in either direction. These arms 16 by their contact with the said shoulder raise said weight 9 for a purpose to be later explained. A locking bolt 18 is slidable within the casing, through a slot 19 formed therein, and is designed to be limited in its inward movement by contact with the shoulder 2O provided on the forked extension 10.
The weight 9 is provided with a Z-shaped recess 21 in which is disposed the depending arm 22 of a bell crank lever 23, the latter being journaled at 24 in the upper end of said casing 7 adjacent one of the side walls thereof. The horizontal arm 25 of the bell crank lever 23 ts within an* extension 26 of the groove 21., and is adapted to engage the shoulders 27 thereof, so that upon the vertical movement of the weight 9, the said arm 22 of the bell crank lever will be swung laterally with respect to said casing 7. The lower end of the arm22 is disposed within either of the grooves 28 of the locking bolt 18, in order that, when the arm 22 moves laterally of the casing 7, the locking bolt 18 will consequently be moved laterally and extended through the slot 19, or retracted within the casing.` The shoulder 2O is extended as at 29 to contact with the arm 22 of the bell crank lever instantaneously upon the engagement of the bolt 18 with the shoulder 20, in order to relieve the latter of the concussion of the said bolt 18 therewith, upon operation of the lock under undue pressure.
An inclined boss 30 is formed in the groove 21 adjacent one side of the weight 9 and is designed to engage the slot 31 formed in a sliding latch 32.l The inner end of thelatch 32 is curved to conform tothe curvature of the arm 22 of the bell crank lever, while the opposite end of said latch is formed angularly, as at 88, to contact with the forward end of the boss 80 so that when the opposite end thereof is in engagement With the bell crank lever, the inward movement of the locking bolt 18 is prevented. This latch 82 is formed With a depending extension 84 provided with a key notch 85 for the reception of a key (not shown) to be used in operating the latch 82 to assume the positions shown in Figs. l and 2. In Fig. l the latch is in an inoperative position which permits the movement of the locking bolt 18 in either direction upon operation of the door knob While, as shown in Fig. 2, the latch is in co-ntact With the boss 80 and arm 22 of the bell crank lever which prevents the retraction of the locking bolt 18 without use of a key corresponding to t-he notch 85. Wlhen in the position shown in Fig. 2 the latch 82 is limited in its downward movement bv the offset portion 86 of the before described shoulder 20.
It should be noted that the grooves 28 are so arranged that it is possible to reverse the position of the locking bolt, Within the casing 7, Without necessitating any changes in the lock mechanisnn The operation of the device is as follows: rlhe locking bolt 18 is normally extended to engage the keeper, and when it is'desired to lock the same against movement the key is operated to force thev latch 82 against the rear sideof the arm 22 of the bellcrank lever 28 as shown in Fig. 2. `When in this position the rear end of said latch contacts with the stop 8O Which obviously holds the bolt 18 in its extended position and prevents the opening ofthe door except by means of the key. When it is desired to unlock the door the key is inserted through the key hole into engagement with the eX- tension 86 of the latch and is rotated in a reverse direction which obviously raises the shoulder 88 of the latch 82 vabove the boss 80 until the slot 8l engages said boss 80 which obviously holds the latch 82 in inoperative position. The door knob (not shown in the drawing) is then rotated causing the arms to raise the Weight thereby operating the bell crank lever 28 to retract the bolt i8 and to permit the opening of the door. From the vforegoing disclosures it will be kmanifest that a lock of the nature described is provided which Will fulfil all of the necessary requirements o-f such a device.'
Vlhat is claimed is 1. In a lock such as described, a sliding weight, a sliding locking bolt, a bell crank lever connecting said sliding Weight and locking bolt, means for raising and lovvering said sliding Weight, and a slidable latch adapted to engage the slidingV Weight and bell crank lever.
2. In a lock such as described, a casing, a Weight slidable therein, a locking bolt slidable Within said casing at right angles to the path of movement of said sliding Weight, means for raising or lowering said sliding Weight, a bell crank lever engaging sai sliding Weight and locking bolt, a boss formed upon said sliding Weight, a latch designed to engage said boss and contact with the bell crank lever, and means for op` erating said latch.
