To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Emvns'r DUsoHnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Urosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Typesetters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in type setters and its object is to provide a simple device having few parts adapted to the rapid delivery and distribution of type into a composing stick and into the font respectively. The particular advantage of my device lies in the convenient arrangement of alphabets in the font, the simplicity of loading the font, the positive action of the type release in connection with the individual type and the inexpensive construction employed.

In the above drawings I have illustrated a supporting frame A carrying posts 5 and 6 which support between them two fonts of type B and C one above the other. the upper of the fonts B being hinged on the support A to rotate away from the font C for convenience in inspecting the type in the font. tive position. The posts 5 and 6 of the frame are so proportioned as to give the fonts a sharp slope from horizontal and producing an easy gravity feed of the type in the font.
Each of the fonts is composed of a series of type holding elements D which have the form of channels with edges 8 which serve to confine the type and act as race-ways therefor. The type holders D as illustrated, are formed of thin metal and placed side by side across the font with their race ways extending longitudinally of the fonts. The adjacent sides of the type holders are brazed together or united in any suitable manner to form a continuous structure.
The race ways of the type holders C are shaped to admit type E of the form shown. These type have a printing face 9 above the holders and grooves 10 on each lateral side of the type adapted to engage the edges 8 of the race ways. The grooves 10 form a pair of shoulders 11 which rest upon the edges 8 in the normal position of the type E. Shoulders 12 are formed below the grooves 10 and prevent the type from falling out of the race ways. The bottom surface of the type has supporting faces 13 adapted to rest on the printing block and a groove ll at the middle. The base part of the type is formed heavier than the part above the grooves 10 causing the type to normally assume a Vertical position in the forms. The type E are introduced into the holder at the upper end of the race way with the grooves 10 engage ing the edges 8 and normally slide by gravity down the race way, the angle of slope of the font being adapted to the friction be tween the type and holder. The upper end of the holder is provided with a type receiver to receive type from magazines or distributing sticks while the lower end of the holder is formed with a type delivery for passing type to the composing sticks and unloaders. The receiving end of the holder is formed with a channel shaped trip 15 below its bottom and a guide 16 above its bottom these parts being attached to the ma terial of the holder by means of rivets 17 (see Fig. or in any suitable manner. The trip and guide extend longitudinally above the holder and are adapted to engage between them the extremity of a magazine or distributing stick from which the type is received into the raceway of the holder.
The guide 16 is formed with upwardly extending sides 18 which near the extremities of the guide lie below the bottom of the type E and which have convex faces 19 opposite to the opening of the raceway of the holder. The convex faces 19 are impinged upon by the advancing type, the type being raised slightly to carry it by any irregularity at the entrance of the raceway. By this means the uninterrupted movement of the type into the raceway is insured. The trip 15 is operative only in connection with the distributing stick and will be described later.
The delivery end of the type holder is provided with a spring stop 20 fastened upon the lower side of the holder and having a pin 21 projecting through the bottom of the holder to engage type descending in the raceway and hoidthem. Within the holder a spring friction retarder 22 is positioned to normally lie below type moving in the raceway, both the stop 20 and retarder 22 being formed with downwardly extending extremities. The retarder 22 is formed with a detent 28 lying in the center line of the holder and a downwardly extending extremity 24: which is apertured to embrace the stop point 21 The distance between the pin 21 and the detent 23 above it is equal to the width of a type E lying in the raceway, and the raising of the retarder 22 clamps the second type in the raceway against the edges 8 thereof preventing its .movement downward when the first type is released by the pin 21.
The spring retarder and spring stop actingtogether constitute a type release adapted to deliver type singly from the holder.
v The operation of the spring parts to release the type is secured by a guide and trip identical with those provided at the receiving end of the holder on a composing stick.
A supplementary stop 25 is provided lying below the holder and pivoted midway of its length on the holder. The lower end of the stop rests upon the stop 20 by which the supplementary stop is actuated. At its upper end the supplementary stop carries a stop pin 26 which penetrates the holder on its center line and when operated by the stop 20 rises into the holder to engage a type E and clamp it against the edges 8 of the raceway preventing its downward movement until released. A spring 27 isplacedbetween the outside of the holder and the stop to withdraw the pin 26 from the holder when pressure on the stop is released.
In connection with the type holders D, I use a type magazine 13 (see Fig. 8) having one closed end and a cross section similar to that of the type holder. The open end of the magazine is provided with a lip 28 which is bent up across the open end of the magazine preventing movement of type contained After bending the lip 28 down the type E are held in the magazine by hand until it is connected with the holder as shown when the type are released to slide into the holder by gravity as shown in Fig. 5. I also use in connection with my type font, a combined composing and distributing stick G which may be of any length for convenience in setting up lines of type. 'The stick G has a cross section similar to the holder D and is provided with receiving and delivery parts identical with those described in connection with the holder D. delivery end of the stick G may be used in connection with the receiving end of the holder D to deliver single type in distributing the stick of type to the font while a receiving end on the stick similar to that described on the holder D is adapted to operate the type release at the lower end of the holder. Inthis way the combined composing and distributing stick is used in connec-' tion. with the font in making up lines of type and becomes a distributing stick when used to distribute the same type to the font. The movement of the type from the holder into one end of the composingstick G and out of the other end of the stick into the receiving end of the holder maintains the individual type E in the same vrelative position through repeated operations.
The receiving parts 15 and 16 when acting in connection with the delivery end of the holder release typeE from the holder singly. The guide 16 moves along the bottom of the holder and into engagement with the retarder 22 raising it and causing the detent 23 to engage the second type from the bottom of the holder. As the stick receiving parts advance farther the extremity of the trip 15 engages the stop 20 the trip and stop being formed with beveled engaging surfaces which cause the stop to move downwardly from the holder as the trip advances in this way withdrawing the pin 21 from engagement with the lowest type in the holder and allowing that type to slide downward into the composing stick G. The guide 16 being formed with convex surfaces 19 as described to support the type while passing the joint at the adjacent ends of the holder andstick.
In operating the stick G as a composing stick it is reciprocated parallel with the holder for each letter required allowing one or more types as desired carrying that letter to enter the stick. In using the stick G as a distributing stick the delivery parts are It is evident that the reciprocated with respect to the receiving part of the holder allowing the type singly to pass out of the stick G and into the holder.
A letter bar 30 is supported on the frame A at the lower end of the holders D and is provided with suitable numerals 31 for the identification of the type in the individual holders. Guide pegs 32 are fixed in the letter bar 30 adjacent to the lower extremity of the holders and adapted to engage the lower side of the channel shaped trip 15 to give greater accuracy in operating the composing stick in connection with the holder.
A. letter bar 33 is provided at the top of each font. The guide pegs 32 are not necessary at the upper end of the font since the receiving parts 15 and 16 form a natural guide at that point.
I have illustrated a type form H in connection with my composing stick G. The form H is provided with slots 3i of the same width as the raceways in the type holder and sticks and adapted to receive a line of type to hold it for printing purposes. The slots 31 are widened at one extremity to receive the end of the composing stick G. Detents 35 on the sides of the delivery end of the composing stick engage the sides 37 of the slots 31 at their widened extremities and hold the composing stick in operative position. As the composing stick is brought into connection with the type form H the end of the form engages the stop 20, opening it. In this way the pin 21 is withdrawn without the operation of the retarder 22 and the entire line of type contained in the composing stick (Jr is free to move by gravity into the slot 34 where they may be held rigid in the form by compressing the shoulders 11 and 12 of the end type of the line or blanks placed at the ends, upon the edges 37 of the slots 34.
To distribute type from the form the compressed shoulders are loosened from the form, and the empty composing stick is placed in the same position as when filling a form and the position of the parts is changed so that the type slide by gravity out of the slots 3-1: into the raceway of the stick G- where they are prevented by hand from escaping at the receiving end of the stick. The stick G may be then used as a distributing stick to replace type in the font as previously described.
An unloader J illustrated in Fig. 7 may be used in connection with my font to remove a considerable number of type at once from the individual holders without repeated operation of the type release. The unloader J is formed similar to the stick G with a raceway for type. One end 38 of the unloader is closed to prevent the type from escaping while the opposite end is formed With a trip 15 identical with the trips previously described. A guide 39 is provided in place of the guide 16 having convex sides 40 similar to the side 18, but of such length that when the unloader is connected with the holder D the trip 15 operates the stop 20 withdrawing the pin 21 from the raceway of the holder. During this last mentioned movement the spring retarder 22 is not operated and the detent 23 remains below the level of the type in the raceway.
The operation of the stop 20 operates the supplementary stop 25 as previously described engaging a type E at a point above the detent 23. \Vhen the pin 21 is withdrawn by the further action of the trip 15 the type in the raceway below the pin 26 of the stop 25 slide freely from the raceway into the unloader J. The length of the stop is made such that the type below the pin 26 released by the unloader will fill a magazine F previously described. The unloader is adapted to rapidity and convenience in removing type from av font to replace them with other type.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only'illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a type font, a type holder having a slideway adapted to the passage of type therethrough by gravity, a pair of stops in said slideway adapted to release type singly from said slideway and a supplementary stop above said pair of stops and cooperating with one stop of said pair to release a plurality of type simultaneously from said slideway.
2. A type holder having a slideway adapted to the passage of type therethrough by gravity, means for releasing a single type at a time from said slideway and means for releasing a predetermined plurality of type simultaneously from said slideway, said releasing instrumentalities being adapted to cooperate with a composing stick to selectively release either a single type or a plurality of type from said holder at a time.
3. In a type font, a type holder having a slide way adapted to the passage of type therethrough by gravity, a stop and a retarder in said slide way adapted to release type singly from said slideway and a supplementary stop above said stop and retarder adapted to' cooperate therewith and release a predetermined plurality of type simultaneously from said slide way.
4:. In a type font, a type holder having a slide way adapted to the passage of type therethrough by gravity, cooperating stops at the lower end of said slide way adapted to the escapement of type from said slide way singly, an auxiliary stop above said lower stops adapted to the escapement of a predetermined plurality of type from said slide way simultaneously and means interposed between said lower stops and upper stop whereby said lower stops are rendered inactive and said upper stop interposed in the path of type above said predetermined plurality in said guide way.
5. In a type font, a holder having a slide way adapted to the passage of type therethrough by gravity, a primary stop at the lower end of said slide way, a spring on which said stop is mounted and depressible to move said stop out of the path of type in said slideway, a spring retarder depressibly mounted in said slideway and adapted to engage a type next above the lowermost type in said slideway, an auxiliary stop in said slide way adapted to lie in the path of a predetermined plurality of type in said slideway to permit said plurality to be released from' said slide way simultaneously and an arm carrying said auxiliary stop and Copies of this patent may be obtained for tiltingly mounted upon said slide way with its free end impinging against said spring whereby when said primary stop is moved out of the path of the type in said slide way, said auxiliary stop is interposed in the path of type remaining above said plurality.
6. A type font, comprising, in combination, a type holder having a slideway adapted to the passage of type therethrough by gravity, cooperating stops at the lower end of said slideway adapted to the escapement, of; type from said slideway singly, an auxiliary stop above said lower stops adapted, to the escapement of a predetermined plurality of type, from said slideway simultaneously and a rocker arm tiltingly mounted upon said holder and having one of its ends connected with one of said lower stops and its other end connected with said upper stop whereby said lower stops are inactive when said upper stop is projected into said slideway to release a predetermined plurality of type from said slideway.
