Be it known that I, ALBERT S. HOGE, a citizen of the United States, .residing at Vise, in
the county of Wise and State of Virginia, have invented certain new Vand 11sefnl`Improvements in Type-Distributing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact descriptionof the invention,
such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use -the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in machines for distributing type, and
has for its object to provide means for sorting and distributing type taken in blocks or lines from a form or font and depositing each individual type in a separate and distinct receptacle, the type of a given character resting one above the'other in lines.
My invention is especially designed to be used in connection with a type settingmachine which forms the subject-matter of an My said invention consists in certain no`v.
elty in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichg Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2, atransverse section on line a; a: of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section; and Figs. t and 5 are details of parts of my said invention.
In this machine each character has a separate receptacle in which it is deposited, but for convenience in illustrating my invention I have only shown in the drawings two of said receptacles and the distributing mechanism connected with each. In practice said receptacles will be arranged in series, side by side, extending from one end of the machine to the other.,

Said receptacles are secured to and extend beneath the ways on which the type box moves and are provided with a removable section, 18, which can be detached when filled. The stops have their opposite ends cut away at 219, as shown. When either of thekey levers of a givenieharacter is operated, the stop is moved up between the lugs of the type fingers, and as the type box is passed over the same said stop engages the type, and as the box continues its movement forces they type ofif` Ithe lugsof the fingers onto the top of the plungerof` the receptacle. The lever engaging the rod, 25, operating the escapement device, forces the fixed pawl into engagement and releases the spring pawl. As the lever is released it is returned to its normal position and the rigid pawl is forced down out of engagement with the rack, the spring pawl engaging the same when the weight of the rack or the spring,
24, forces said spring pawl down to the limit of its tension, thus permitting the plunger to be lowered sufhciently to bring the top of the type last deposited on a level with the lugs ready to receive another type.

The operation of my said invention is` as follows: The box is first moved to the extreme left of the ways until the projecting pins of the type fingers engage the highest plane of the cam groove. The upper faces of the lugs of the type fingers are then flush with the bottom of the box. The spring follower is then compressed and type taken from a form or font are placed in the box in blocks, sol that they will rest in parallel lines, one type above another in each line with the faces toward the front of the machine. The cnt-off is then removed and the spring follower forces the first line of type between the type fingers, the ends of lowest type resting on the lugs of said fingers. The cut-off is then replaced between said line and the next adjoining line and the machine is ready for operation. As each line of type is disposed of, the cut-off is removed and the fingers again filled. The operator can then see the character to be first distributed through the slotsin the side of the box and type finger. The key for this character on the right of the receptacle, if the box is moving toward the right, is then depressed, which operates one of the stops for this receptacle, moving it up, and as the type box passes lover the same the first type engages the stop and is forced off the lugs upon the top of the plunger in the receptacle. The key being released, the plunger lowers and is ready to re ceive another type on top of the one last deposited. When the box is moving to the left of the machine, the left hand key of the receptacle is used.
As type areof different thickness, I have 4made the cam slots in steps, each step being in a different plane, For instance, the first plane brings the lugs on a plane with the bottom of the box ready toreceive the type. When the fingers are loaded, the box is moved until the pin-s of the fingers are ink the proper plane of the cam slot for a given character to lower said lugssufciently below the bottom of the box a sufficient degree to permit the planes may be used as may be found necessary.
The object of having two keys of the same character is to enable the operator to easily and quickly operate the device, no matter at which end of the machine the box may be. As the bottom type is deposited in its proper receptacle, the next type falls on the lugs of the fingers and the operator can see its face through the slots in the box and fingers. Said box is then moved to the proper receptacle and the operation continued until all the type are distributed.
When the receptacles are filled, their lower portions are removed and placed upon the ends of the chutes of the type setting machine described in my application hereinbet'ore referred to andforced by a plunger into said chutes.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. In a machine for distributing type, th combination with suitable ways, a movable type carrying box mounted thereon and provided with a discharge opening or slot in its bottom, vertically movable 'type holding tinmounted in the box and passing through the discharge opening or slot, and means for auto1 matically raising and lowering said lingers, of aseries of .type receptacles located under the ways, and mechanism for forcing the type from the type fingers into the receptacles, and an individual key lever located at each box for operating said mechanism, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a machine for distributing type, the combination with suitable ways, a movable type carrying box mounted on s'aid ways and provided with the discharge slot in its bottom, vertically movable type holding fingers projecting through the discharge slot and provided with inwardly projecting lugs on their lower ends, and outwardly projecting and oppositely disposed pins on their sides, and parallel bars located above the ways and provided With parallel cam slots arranged ina series of different planes, forming steps and adapted to be engaged by the pins on the iingers of a series of type receptacles located below the ways, mechanism' for forcing a type from the fingers into the receptacles, and a series of key levers Vfor operating said mechanism,gsubstantially as shown and described.
4. In a machine for distributing type, the combination with suitable ways, a type box, 2, mounted on said Ways and having the discharge slot, 13, vertically movable type iingers, 1l, mounted in the box and extending through the slot and provided with the lugs, '14, and projecting pins, 16, and the bars located above the ways and provided with cam slots, 4, arranged in a series of different planes and adapted to be engaged by the fingers, of a series of type receptacles arranged under the ways, independent mechanism for forcing theV type from the type fingers into the receptacles, and a series of key levers for operating said mechanism, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a machine for distributing type, the combination with a movable type carrying box having a discharge slot, 13, the type holding fingers, ll, mounted in the box and extending through the slot and provided with the lugs, 14, and projecting pins, 16, and the parallel bars having the cam slots, 4, arranged in a series of different planes and adapted to be engaged by the'pins, ofthe series of type receptacles arranged under the ways andprovided with the vertically movable type stops, 27, and the key levers, 28, pivoted to Y said stops, all constructed, arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
6. In a machine for distributing type, the combination with suitable Ways, the type box mounted thereon and provided with the dis- -charge slot, 13, and parallel side slots, 15, the
type holding fingers, 11, provided with vertical slots, 151, lugs, 14, and projecting pins, 16, and the parallel bars having the cam slots, 4, arranged in a series of diterent planes and adapted to be engaged by the said pins, 16, substantially as shown and described.
y 7.v In a machine for distributing type, the y combination with a movable type carrying box having the spring actuated plunger, 30, and cut-oft, 31, and the discharge slot, 13, of the vertically movable type holding ngers, 11, passing through the discharge slot, and means for operating said iingers, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a machine for distributing type, the combination with the type carrying box, mechanism for discharging the type therefrom, one at a time, and suitable key levers for operating said mechanism, a series of type receptacles, each provided with a plunger, and mechanism controlled by the' key levers for lowering one of the plungers a given space IOO at eachroperation of its connected key lever, l
substantially as shown and described.
9. In a machine for distributing type, the combination with the series of type receptacles, the plungers, 18, lmounted in said receptacles and having the rack, 19, of the pivoted pawls, 20, having the rigid members, 2,1, and spring members, 22, and lever arms, 23, the rods, 25, pivotedto said lever arm, and the key levers, 28, engaging said rods, 25, all constructed, arranged and operating substantially as shown and described;
