ARGYLE CAMPBELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. ASSIGNOR TO ENTERPRISE RAILWAY EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DUMP-CAR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RGYLE Cani-asma., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and ttate of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dun'ip-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to thi` accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to railway cars, and has for its object the. provision of a car ot novel design, the novel features relating more particularly to the underframing of the car.'
rlhis application is a division of my application Serial No. (36;Jg29l, tiled Dee. G, 1911. In my aforesaid cti-pending application I set forth a car of a structure which includes the novel features claimed herein, but confine my claims in said fundamental application to a certain hopper construction.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a car of great strength which may be built comparatively cheap and of light construction, the car being especially designed to withstand severe shocks of service.
In describing the invention herein, I will lay particular stress on the features claimed herein; referring however incidentally to the remaining structural features of the car in order to outline the entire construction.
It will, of course, be apparent that the invention herein outlined is capable of applicationV in various ways and while particularly described herein in connection with a car ordinarily known as a ballast car, the invention or certain features thereof are equally applicable otherwise.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a plan view showing the draft sills, a portion of a single center sill and of a body bolster, and the method of uniting the same; Fig. 2 is an elevation partially in Vertical section along the line Q, 2 of Fig. l, showing the draft sills, single center sill, bolster and surrounding parts. i Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of single center sill taken on line of Fig. l gllig. e is a side elevation of a portion of the single center sill showing recess for king pin; Fig. 5 is a cross section of the draft sills taken through line 5-5 ot'Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view on line fi-G Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
of Fig. l, and Fig. i' is a cross-sectional view on line 'T-T of Fig.
In the drawings the numeral 2l.) represents a single center sill extending longitudinally of the car with its ends passing preferably to the forward edges of the body bolster 3U of the car, though the saine may be extended to the draft devices, and having a vertical recess 3l on its under surface for the reception of the king pinnot shown in the d awings. The said center sill 25) is provided on either side with angle irons secured thereto by means ot rivets 33, and preferably attached to the web of said center sill along the line of draft from the draft devices of the car, for better distributing the shocks received therefrom.
The numeral l-l represents draft sills extending from the end of the car, preferably to the rear edge of the body bolsters 30, each of the same at either end of the car passing outside of and beyond the end of the center sill 29, and supporting between them suitable draft devices not shown in drawings. The said draft sills are preferably turned inwardly and joined togethet` at their upper edges, as shown in lfig. The spaces between the said center sill and the draft sills are lilled by filler blocks 12, 35. ln preferable construction tour filler blocks are used, two, preferably castings l2, being placed in the space between the sills at the rear of the central line this application filed September of the transverse body bolster. and tWo similar filler blocks, preferably castings 35,`
sills, single center sill and body bolster, and
enabling the transmission of heavy shocks through the same without danger of shearing or buckling. By thus extending the center sill to or beyond the forward edge of the body bolster, and thus binding the same to the draft sills and adjacent parts I am enabled to more than compensate in strength for the recess 3l in the said center sill for the reception of the king pin, and secure a ing body holsters,
strong continuous girder in the underfraine ivorlr of the ear body from one end to the other thereof. o
lroin What has thus been deseribed, the application of my invention, of course, to ears will be readily apparent and its nature understood.
As before stated my invention is capable of many modifications, and having thus described one specific form which my invention may take,
ldlliat l claiin as new by Letters lPatent is:
l. The combination of a car body having a single center sill extending at each end beyond the central line of the body bolster, body'bolsters a pair of draft sills at each end of the car body the said draft sills eX- tending from the end of the car to the rear edge of the. adjacent body bolster, the said center sill and draft sills being suitably bound together by filler blocks into a .continuous girder from end to end of the car body, the said center sill being provided near each end with a recess for the reception of a king pin.
2. ln a single center sill car a center sill extending at each end thereof to the outer edge of the body bolster, body holsters and draft sills extending to the inner edge of the body `holsters, and filler bloclrs secured at and desire to secure each of the meeting points of holsters, draft and tying the satinatosills and center sills,
gether, the said center sill being provided with angle irons on either side thereof along the line of draft, and also provided near eash of its ends 'with a recess for the reception of a king bolt.
3, ln a car body an underfrarne comprissuitable end sills, a pair of draft sills at each end, filler blocks and a single center sill, each of said pairs of draft sills being turned together and joined at the upper edges thereof and fastened to the center sill by said iilller blocks.
Ll. ln a cai-.body an underframo comprising body holsters, suitable end sills, a pair of draft sills at each end, filler blocks and a single center sill, each of said pairs ofdraft sills being turned together and joined at the upper edges thereof and fastened to the center sill by said filler blocks, said center sill being, proyided with recesses in its under surface for the reception of king pins.`
5. In a car body an ing body bolsters, suitable end sills, a pair of draft sills at each end, filler blocks, and a single'center sill, each of said pairs of draft sills being turned together and joined at the upper edges thereof, and fastened to the center sill through the filler blocks, the said center sill having recesses for the reception of king pins, and provided back of the body bolsters with longitudinally arranged angle irons.
6. ln a car body an underframe comprising body holsters, suitable end`A sills, a pair of draft sills at each end, filler blocks and a single center sill, each of said pairs of sills being turned together and united at the upper edges thereof and fastenedto the said center sill along the central line of the said union adj oiningthe said center sill, the said draft sills being also fastened to the body holsters the said filler blocks being riveted underfranie compris.
draft to the bolster, center sill and draft sills sub- 1 rstantially as specified.
7. nin a'car body an underframe comprising body bolsters, suitable end sills, a pair of draft sills at each end, filler blocks and a single center sill, each of said pairs of draft sills being turned together and joined at `the upper edges thereofand fastened to the center sill by said filler blocks, andalso fastened to lthe saidcenter sill alon the adjoining length of union of said draft sills, the said draft sills being further fastened to the body bolster substantially as specified.
