IVIORBIS J. WHEELER, OF PETERBORO, NEX/V HANIPSHIRE, ASSIGNGB. OF ONE-HALF `TO FRANK B. FOSTER, 0F PETERBORO, NEW" HAMPSHIRE.
BOX.
.Application led May 15, 1914.
To all lwhom t may concern Be it known that l, MORRIS J. VHEELER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Peterboro, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to boxes of that general type in which a strip of veneer is employed to form the body, other than the bottom thereof, and to form the flange of the cover.
The object of my invention is to provide a box, the body of which is formed of a single strip formed into a fiat coil, that is to say, with the convolutions one within the other, and in which the inner convolution will have increased height, thereby presenting a neck within the outer convolution to receive the ange of the cover, the exterior of the outer layer and of the flange of the cover being flush, or forming parts of the same cylindrical surface.
1n carrying out the invention, a blank is produced in the form of an elongated strip, preferably of veneer or similar thin material, the strip for approximately half its length being of less height than the remaining half, the one end having a locking head, and there being a mating opening in the strip adjacent to the juncture of the wider and narrower portions.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a box body formed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a partly sectional side elevation of the body and the cover, the latter being shown raised, Fig. 3 is a broken plan view of the blank strip or band from which the body is formed; and Fig. l is a similar' view of the blank strip or band from which the flange of the cover is formed.
The body is formed with an outer layer 10, and an inner layer 10a continuous therewith and of greater height than the outer layer, so that the upper end thereof will present a projecting neck of reduced diameter. The inner and outer layers are Continuous with each other and in the form of convo- Speoication of Letters Patent.

lutions of a flat coil. In order to secure the outer end for holding the layers in coiled form, the terminal end of the outer layer is provided with a locking ,head l1, which is formed by producing opposed side Vnotches 12, the forward ends of which present rearwardly facing shoulders 13. To receive the `head 1l, the body is formed with an opening 1121 at about the center of the strip, said opening being substantially triangular, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, and presenting sides converging in the direction of the head 11. T he body therefore is in the form of a band of inner and outer convolutions, the lower edges of which are flush and are secured in any suitable manner to the bottom 9, as is common with boxes involving the use of similar material.
The cover consists of a top 14, and a band 15 which is of substantially uniform width throughout, and has at one end a locking head 16 formed by producing notches 17 at opposite sides, presenting shoulders 18, these parts corresponding with the similar elements in the body, the head being receivable in an opening 19, said opening being adjacent to the opposite end of the band, instead of being at an approximately central point as in the body.
The openings 11a and 19 are preferably triangular, which provides the necessary locking engagement with the head and yet permits the convenient entrance of the head. In both cases the locking heads 11, 16, will lie within the outer layer, between the same and the inner layers of the respective bands.'
rl`he juncture of the narrower and wider portions of the band forming the body preferably is inclined and the edge may be beveled, as indicated at 10b (Fig. 2).
rfhe blank from which the body is formed is shown in Fig. 3, the elements bearing corresponding indicating characters, while Fig. 4C represents the blank from which the ange of the cover is formed, such blank being designated by reference characters corresponding with the finished flange of the cover, as shown in Fig. 2. It will thus be seen that the body will receive the cover so that the exteriors of both are flush, and the result is produced from a single blank.
Having thus described the invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A box of the character described, comprising a body and a removable cover, the body being formed of a strip Wound into a flat coil having an inner convolution, and an outer convolution of less height than the inner convolution, the lower edge of the said strip presenting a single continuous straight line, the upper edge of said strip presenting two straight lines in different parallel planes and terminating adjacent to the approximate center of tne strip, the said lower edge of the strip presenting on the body a continuous circular bottom line and lower of the said parallel edge lines defining the top of the outer convolution of the body, and the higher of the said parallel edge lines defining the top of the inner convolution, said strip having a triangular opening adjacent to the terminals of said parallel edge lines, and there being a head on the strip at one end received in the said triangular opening, the said opening presenting sides converging in the direction of the said head.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
