9 Claims.
My invention relates to reels and particularly tov reels which are adapted to be used for wire, wire fencing or similar material.
One object of my invention is to provide a reel of the collapsible type, the parts of which may be easily stored and which may be easily assembied when required for use.
Another object oi my invention is to provide a reel which is made up of a plurality of similar preformed parts.
A further object of my invention is to preform each member so that when a plurality thereof are assembled into a reel they will interlock with each other and the reel will be retained in its assembled condition without the use of any separate fastening means.
A still further object of my invention is to preform each member in such a manner so that when a plurality thereof are assembled into a reel a core is formed to provide an aperture which will permit the reel being mounted on a bar or the like so that it may be conveniently rotated when it is desired to coil the wire thereon or uncoil the wire therefrom.
The novel features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description and claims taken Awith the drawing in which Fig. l is a perspective view of a reel embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the members of the reel shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, l5 designates my improved reel, which, as shown in the drawing, comprises four similar members I6, one of which is plainly shown in Fig. 2. As all of the members iii are similar only one will be described.
The member I6 comprises a longitudinal body portion l'l and laterally disposed head portions ES and l@ which are integral with the ends of the body portion. As both of the head portions are similar in all respects only onefwill be described. The head portion li! comprises a looped portion 2i), having an offset hook portion 2l at its end, a core portion 22, a hook engaging portion 23, which is preferably substantially straight as shown in the drawing, and a hook portion 2li. A recess 25 is formed adjacent the hook portion 2i and the body portion I'! and provides means to receive the offset portion 2l of an adjacent loop portion when the reel is in its assembled condition. The core portion 22 as shown in the drawing is of arcuate formation so that when the members I6 are assembled an aperture will be provided to receive a round bar or the like for handling the reel.
One method of assembling the reel is to pass the head portions i3 and I9 of one member it between the head portions i8 and lil of a second similar member i6, and hooking the portions of the first-mentioned member over the portions 23 of the second member, and then passing the head portions E3 and i9 of a third member it intermediate the head portions i8 and I9 of the second mentioned member and hooking the portions 2li of that member over the portions 23 ci the second-mentioned member and then passing the head portions i3 and I9 of the fourth member I6 between the head l member. The ends 2i are inserted in the recesses before the hook portions 2s are in their final assembled relation with the members 23 and due to the shape of the ends 2l they are locked against displacement when the hook portions 24 are in their nal assembled relation with the portions 23.
From the above it will be obvious that I have invented an improved reel which is preferably made up of identical parts which are easily stored, and which are easily assembled when required.
While I have shown my invention in but one form, I do not wish to be limited to the exact and specific details thereof, as shown and described but may use such modiiieaticn in, substitutions for, or equivalents thereof, as are embraced within the scope of my invention, or as pointed out in the claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A reel, comprising a plurality of similar members, each of said members comprising a body portion and opposite head portions, each of said head portions comprising a looped end portion, a hook at the extremity of said looped end portion and a core portion intermediate said looped end portion and the body portion, and interlocking means integral with the head portions whereby the members are retained in assembled relation.
2. A wire reel comprising a plurality of like members, each of said members constituting a body portion and opposite head portions having looped end portions, and a core portion intermediate eaeh looped end portion and the body portion.
3. A Wire reel comprising a plurality of like members in interlocked relation, each of said members comprising a substantially straight body portion, and head portions, each of said head portions comprising a looped end portion, a hook portion and a core member intermediate the looped end portion and the body portion.
4. A Wire reel comprising a plurality of similar members assembled in interlocked relation, each of said members comprising a substantially straight body portion, and head portions, each of said head portions comprising a looped end portion, a core portion, a substantially straight portion intermediate the looped end portion and the core portion and a hook portion intermediate the body portion and the core portion.
5. A Wire reel comprising a plurality of similar members, each of said members constituting a body portion and opposite head portions, each of the head portions comprising a looped end portion, a core portion intermediate the looped end portion and the body portion, a hook portion intermediate the body portion and the core portion and a hook engaging portion.
6. A Wire reel comprising a plurality of similar members, each of said members constituting a body portion and opposite head portions, each of said head portions comprising a looped end portion, a core portion, a hook engaging portion intermediate the looped end portion and the core portion, a hook portion intermediate the core portion and the body portion forming a recess intermediate the hook portion and the body portion and a hook portion adjacent the terminus of the looped end portion.
7. A Wire reel, comprising four like members only, each of said members constituting a body portion and a head portion of said reel, said head portion comprising an integral core portion and an end portion extending beyond the core portion, and means adjacent the body portion and in spaced relation to the core portion to fasten the members in assembled relation.
8. A reel comprising a plurality of similar members, each of said members comprising a body portion and head portions, each of said head portions comprising a loop portion and a core portion, said core portion lying intermediate said loop portion and the body portion of said member.
9. A reel comprising a plurality of similar members, each of said members comprising a body portion and opposite head portions, the head portion of said member comprising an end portion extending beyond the body of the reel to provide a guard for material Wound on said reel, and a core portion intermediate said end portion and the body portion integral With said portions.
