State of lllinois. have invented an improvement in Door ()pcrating and Locking Mechanism, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing. is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to operating mechanism for sliding doors and particularly to door-operating devices of that nature which include a toggle lever arrangement comprising two members pivotally connected together and pivoted to the door and a fixed abutment. respectively.
The objects of the invention are to pr0- vide a mechanism of this nature with novel means for locking the toggle lever device when the door is closed 'and il or unlocking and breaking said toggle lever device when the door is to be opened.
In accordance with my invention 1 provide the two toggle lever members with portions that overlap each other when the door is closed and also provide means having an interlocking engagement with the overlapping portions to lock them against relative move .ient. In the preferred embodiment of my invention this means is associated with the handle by which the door is opened and the parts are so arranged that when the operator moves the handle the first movement of the handle will unlock the toggle members while further movement of the handle will breakthe toggle and open the door.
In order to give a proper umlerstantling my invention l have illustrated in the avvings a selected en'ibodiment thereof which will now be described after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention aims to provide a novel device which is associated with the togglelever door-closing mechanism by which the toggle-lever is locked when the door is closed, which means also constitute the handle by which the toggle-lever is operated to open the door. The two members 3 and l of the toggle-lever device are arranged to present portions that overlap each other. this being herein provided for by extending the sections 4 beyond the pivot. 7 to provide a portion 12 which overlaps the section 3. I have herein shown the section 4! as made up of two bars between which the ends of the sections 3 and 5 are received. The overlapping portions of the sections 3 and 12 are provided with notches 13 to receive a locking member I l which when in operative position locks the sections 3 and 4 in their alined position and prevents the toggle lever from breaking. This locking memher 14 is herein shown as associated with a handle 15 by which the door can be operated. This handle may conveniently be pivoted to the section 4:, as shown at 16, and it is provided with automatically-operative a which tend normally to throw the loci-ling portion 14 into locking position. Such automatically-operative r means might be a spring or a weight, one being equivalent to the other. The operation of the device will be read- 5 ily understood from the foregoing. When the door is closed the parts are in the full line position Fig. 1 with the locking member 14; occupying the alined notches 13 in the sections 3 and 4, respectively, and when the Q parts .are'in this position not only is the door locked because the sections 3, 4 and 5 are in alinement, but the sections of the toggle lever are locked from-movement relative to each other and, therefore, the toggle lever cannot be broken merely by pressure applied vertically to the SectionsB and 4. In order to open the door the operator grasps the handle 15 and draws downwardly thereon, this movement opera-ting first tofswing so the handle into the dotted line position-Fig.

operation of unlocking the toggle lever and then opening the door involves, therefore;
merely a steady downward and backward pull on the handle 15, the. initial movement of the handle unlocking the toggle lever and the 'i'urther movement breaking the toggle and opening the door. When the opened door is released the door closer and check'll will operate to close the door automatically, and when the door has been closed the weight 17 or other automaticall -'o erated means will automatically cause t e ocking portion 14., to. enter the notches -13 and thus lock the toggle lever in the position shown in Fig; 1.
While I have herein shown the invention as applied to a sectional door, yet it will be obvious that it-could be equally well applied to a single section door in which latter case the pivotal point 8 would be on a fixed abut- 7o ment instead of on a moving door section. The operation of the handle 15 and locking member 14 would not be affected, however, by such change.
