Description

l. W. WILDBR.
SMOKE CONSUMER.
APPLIUATION FILED JUNE 24, 1914.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
.ni/)num miran sraras Parana carica JAMES W. WILDER, 0F BYRON, CALIFORNIA.
SMOKE-CONSUMER.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, JAMES W. WILDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Byron, in the county of Costa and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke- Consumers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in furnaces and more particularly to attachments therefor known as smoke consumers.
It is the object of this invention to pro vide a device adapted for use with any form of furnace in which the smoke caused by the incomplete combustion of the fuel and gases arising therefrom are consumed within the device whereby they are prevented from polluting the atmosphere. The smoke and flue gases are condensed and while such parts as should remain in gaseous form are returned to the lire boX the solid particles with the condensing fluid are discharged from the device.
It is further contemplated that the solid residue carried over ywith the fluid may be reclaimed and put to other uses however such reclaiming of the residue will be made the subject-matter of a separate applica tion.
While the preferred form of this invention is disclosed upon the accompanying sheet of drawing it is to be understood that minor detail changes may be made without departing from the scope thereof.
The figure upon the drawing is a view in central vertical longitudinal section through a device constructed in accordance with this invention with parts shown in side elevation.
In carrying out this invention the size of the relative parts are all proportioned in accordance with the character of the furnace and fire with which it is to be used, and the condensing fluid may be water, air, steam, or any combination of them as the occasion may require. While a smoke consumer constructed in accordance with this invention particularly adapted for use with a steam boiler or battery of boilers is illustrated and described herein, it is to be understood that the applicant reserves the right to make such slight changes as above described to adapt the device to furnaces or fires of a different character Without departing from the scope of this invention.
The embodimentaof this invention as illustrated comprises a tubular easing 1 to be connected at one end 2 to the furnace flue Patented Nov. 17, 1914. serial No. 847,022.
(not shown) and closed at the other endf. Vhile the casing is shown as being supp/ort-` ed 1n a horizontal position it may be vsupported at an angle or in any desired relation or relative position to the flue of the furnace, the iiue terminating at the open end of the casing or being closed therebeyond.
A hollow shaft 4 is mounted centrally of the casing in a bearing 5 supported by the casing at the open end, passes through a central stulling box 6 upon the closed end, and is supported in a rotatable bearing 7 thercbeyond which is provided with a belt pulley 8 or other means for imparting rotation to the shaft exteriorly of the casing.
An outer` spaced apart casing or jacket 9 closed at each end is arranged about the entire length of the main casing 1 and is provided with an inlet valve 10 at any convenient point in its walls.'
The open or front end 2 of the casing may be of any form or shape beyond the bearing 5 for connection to the flue while the closure of the other end 3 is preferably at right angles to the sides. Commencing adjacent the bearing 5 and extending about two-thirds of the length of the casing is a rotary conveyer 11 of low pitch mounted upon the shaft 4 and a plurality of angular beaters l2 are secured to the shaft throughout the remainder of its lengthwithin the casing', the distance between the beater blades 12 preferably being greater than the distance between the convolutions of the conveyer 11.
rso
A plurality of spray nozzles 13 are pro-l vided about the hollow shaft 4 between the convolutions of the conveyer 11 and beater blades 12, the distance of the nozzles from each other preferably being greater throughout the beater. A plurality of spray openings 14 are provided about the sides of the casing leading from the jacket and it is preferable that the distances of the openings from each other be greater in the casing surrounding the beater.
A drain valve 15 leading from the bottom of the interior of the main easing 1 is secured upon the end closure which valve is preferably provided with a stem having a star wheel 16 thereon. A gear wheel 17 is secured to rotate with the'shaft f1 adjacent the outer side of the end closure meshing with a large gear wheel 18 mounted upon a stud carried by the end closure, having a plurality of star wheel engaging lugs 19,
