Description

l iaitth tang stent @ffice WILLIAM H. NOBLES, OF ST. PAUL, MNNESOTA, AND MILTON V. NOBLES, OF ELM'IRA, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 74,410, dated february 11, 1868.
'IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATDBS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that we, WILLIAM H. Nonnns, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, State of Minnesota, and MILTON ff i; V. NOBLES, of Elmira, Chemung county, State of New York, have invented an Improved Spark-Arrester and t Smoke-Consumer; and we do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to tbe letters ot' reference marked thereon, making a part of -this specification.
Figure I represents a longitudinal section Vof the boiler, flues, and fan.
Figure 2, a top view of the end of the boiler, connecting-dues, fan encased with a water-chamber surrounding the outside of the fan-case, and the perforated shaft of the fan-wheel. y
Figure 3 represents a. top view of the water-chamber, with its wheel for cleaning out the sediment of cinders and ashes. 1
The object of our invention is to conduct the heat and smoke from and to the fireplace in one continuous course, so that the smoke shall .pass through tha gratas, assisting the combustion of the escaped gases, giving-a greater degree of heat,'whch is controlled by the spray of commingle'd steam and water, whilst the cinders and ashes are being regularly and continually discharged, so that the course of the draught is not interrupted.
A represents a steam-generator; I3, the Ere-chamber; C, the grate running iengthwisc with the boiler. D is an air-chamber underneath the grate. E represents the water in said chamber, in which the cinders and ashes are collected as they pass through' and from the inclined tube F, and also the cinders and ashes as they i fall from the grates above. A revolving wheel, Gr, operates inn the bed of the chamber E for the purpose of discharging the cinders and ashes from the chamber E, through the` aperture and .pipe H. The wheel G can be driven by bevel or other gearing I'. 'IJ are the'ues conducting theheat, smoke, and cinders from the fireplace B, as indicated by the arrows, and connecting withthe doubie-eased fan-wheel K, the shaft of the Wheel being hollow and perforated to admit a. spray or jets of water upon the wheel to keep the wheel cool, and also to wet vthe cinders, ashes, and dust that may be carried from the fireplace into the fan-chamber, and then blown into and carried olf-through the tube .F 'tothe wateichamber E; the tube F being s'uiiiciently large to carry a' the smoke, and also to allow thespray of commingledsteam and water to condense and pass through the tube. The fan-wheel K is encased and enclosed in a separate outside case, L, which is. to contain water, to Vprevent the inner case and wheel from becoming injured by intense heat, or we Ymay use an air-pump in place of the fan, if deemed proper. A waste-pipe, b1, connected with the fan-chamber, may be used' tofsupply heat toa i train of cars, or to any room, land the other end of waste-pipe is intended to be joined with the water-chamber E, so as'tcreturn the smoke or heat back to the replace, or be disposed of as may be deemednecessary. N is a chimney or pipe, located above the fireplace, with'a damper that is intended to be used for the smoke to pass off Whilst the fire isbeing made to start the engine, wherever required.
What we'claim as our invention, and desire to secure ,by Letters Patent, is 1. The combination of the fan-wheel case K and the.waterchamber L, .as herein described and set forth. 2. Ve alsoclaim the combination of the watebchamber E and Wheel G, as herein described and set forth. 3. We also `claim the arrangement of tlie inner and outer cases K and L, wheel Gr, discharge-opening H, ilue F, and chamber D, whereby to conduct .the heat and smoke from the `replaceand back, in one continuous r t ti course .substantiall as herein set forth.
o a ng y W. H. NoBLEs,
M. v. NoBLns.
