'T he operation of the illustrated deviceswill be apparent from what has already been said, it being suliicient to repeat that the Weight of the rod 4 and the connected parts when unopposed causes them to dropinto a lower position in which the bolt parts 12 and 112 are rotated into locking-position as shown in Fig. 8; whereas the same bolt parts'are withdrawn and the doors unlocked by pressing the handle bar 10 toward the door as shown in Fig. 9.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a door and its frame, a rod or bar extending substantially from top to bottom of the door, means for lifting the said rod, comprising a swinging bar and a-connection between said bar and said means, the said rod being mounted to gravitate to its normal position after being lifted, bolts at the upper and lower ends of said rod, sockets for said bolts, and positive operative connections between said bolts and rod whereby the movement of the rod by gravity causes both bolts to enter their sockets and the lifting of' the rod causes the same to be withdrawn therefrom.
2. The combination of a bar mounted to move up and down, means for raising the said bar, the said bar being mounted to return to its normal position by gravity, a plurality of bolts, sockets for the said bolts and a connection between a bolt and said bar whereby movement of the bar downward causes the said bolt to move upward in a direction at an angle to the line of movement of said bar into its socket, and the construction and arrangement being such that the gravity of the bar tends to cause both bolts to enter their sockets.
3. The combination with a door and its frame, a rod or bar adapted to be mounted on the door, means for moving the said rod from its normal position, comprising a swinging bar and a connection between said bar and said means, bolts non-integral with said rod at the ends of said rod, sockets for said bolts, and operative connections between said bolts and rod whereby the move ment of the rod in one direction causes both bolts to move in opposite directions to enter or withdraw from their sockets.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of bolts, a member mounted to move alternately to and from the said bolts. a pivoted connecting member between each of said bolts and the said member which moves to and from them, and a connection between the said member 5nd each of the bolts whereby to and from movement of the said member imparts movement to one of the. bo ts in the same direction and to the other bolt in an opposite direction.
5. In a device of the character described, the cbmbination of an upper and a lower bolt, a connecting member extending from one to the other, means for moving the said connecting member bodily alternately to and from each of the said bolts, comprising a swinging bar and a connection between said bar and said means, and means for causing the movement of the said connecting member in one direction to simultaneously operate both bolts in opposite directions.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination of an upper and a lower bolt, a connecting member extending from one to the other, means for moving the said connecting member bodily alternately to and from each of the said bolts, comprising a swinging bar and a connection between said bar. and said means, and means for causing the movement of the said connecting member in one direction to operate both bolts and move them to alocked position, and whereby the movement of said connecting member in the opposite direction will operate both bolts to move them to an ,unlocked position. I
7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of bolts, socket members adapted to receive said bolts, a member extending from one bolt to the other and adapted to operate both bolts, comprising a swinging bar and a connection between said bar and said means, means for causing movement'of said member in one direction to move both bolts into their re spective sockets and for causing movement of said member in the opposite direction tomove both bolts from their sockets, and means for moving the said member.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of bolts, 100 sockets adapted to be engaged by said bolts,
a member mounted to be moved to and from said bolts and to cause the same to engage and disengage their respective sockets by said movement, means for moving the said 105 member, comprising a swinging bar and a connection between said bar and said means, and connections between the said member and the bolts whereby the boltsare operated in the manner specified, and are held no against movement into and out of their sockets by said member.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a bolt, a socket adapted to be engaged by said bolt, a member ii: mounted to be move-J to and from said bolt and to cause the same to engage and disengage its socket by said movement, means for moving the said member, and a connection I between the said member and the bolt whereby the bolt is operated as above stated, and held in engagement with its socket by the gravity of said member.
10. The combination of a bar mounted to move up and down, means for raising the said bar, the said bar being mounted to return to its normal position by gravity, a plurality of bolts, sockets for the said bolts and a connection between one of the said bolts and the bar whereby vertical movebeing mounted to move into and out of its ment of the bar causes the said bolt to move to and from its socket at an angle to the line of movement of said bar, and whereby when the door is closed contact between the said bolt and its socketimparting angular movement to the bolt causes the bar to move vertically.
11.. In a device of the character described, the combination with a door and its frame and a suitable socket in the frame adjacent to the door. ofa bolt carried by the door and adapted to engage said socket, said bolt being mounted to move into and out of its socket on a line at less than a right angle to the line of movement of the door, a bar mounted on said door to move angularly with respect to the movement of the door and the bolt, a connection between the sa d bar and bolt whereby movement of the for mer causes the latter to move into and out of its socket and movement of the latter causes the former to move to its unlocking position, and additional means for moving the said bar to cause it to unlock the said bolt.
12. In a device of the character described. the combination with a door and its frame and a suitable socket in the frame adjacent to the door, of a bolt carried by the door and adapted to engage said socket. said bolt socket on a line at less than a right angle to the line of movement of the door, a bar mounted on said door to move angularly with respect to the movement of the door and the bolt. a connection between the said bar and bolt \vherebv movement of the former causes the latter to move into and out of its socket and movement of thelatter causes the former to move to its unlocking vframe. of a locking and unlocking device comprising a socket in the frame having a side inclined inwardly from a point adja" cent to the door, a bolt adapted to engage said socket and. having a portion adapted to come in contact vrith said inclined surface, means for f'l i'r'v'lf g the said bolt into and out I 7 unit a ith the soii'nlict, the consiractn'm and arr; that win-n the bolt mow nith the socket the po ion \xincn comes in contact with the inclined surface moves in a direction approximately parallel therewith.
