To Il whom -z' t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES Brooklyn, in the county of Kings a York, have invented a new and ment in Vacuum and other Pumps, oi' which the i'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part oI this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section ot' a pump having my improvement applied to it.

A represents the cylinder ot' a vacuum-pump, arranged to occupy a horizontal position, and having pans, inletpump is merely -pan or pans on on bothA or opposite sides of it; but a single connection only maybe used where the required to connect with a vacuum one side of it.

Each of these valve-box covers D has the seats 1l (l of a series of puppet-valves f f formed in them 'or in a plate, Q, fitted thereto, the openings in or through said seats establishing communication, byor through a passage, 11, made in the cover, between the receiving-valve box or chamber G and passages c, in connection {vith which such set or series of valves is arranged to operate.

From this description it will be seen that every facility' is afforded, without disturbing the pump, by merely taking otf either valve-bonnet or cover lt'roin the cylinder, for lifting out and removing, collec 'vely, the several valves f f and their seats d (l in a series, as examination, repair, or removal of an obstacle may require, and that, by unsclewing the `nuts m m., the valve-guiding and spring-holding bar Emay be disconnected for the purpose of separately removing. any one or more of the valves or getting at their seats.
In working the pump it isedesirable to-introdnce a little water into the inlet-passage or passages to fill f fare steadied and guided by arrangthe space left between the head of the piston and end of the cylinder at each termination ofthe stroke, and to seal the valves, also, to prevent heating. Should such water he admitted in quantity greater than necessary for these purposes, such surplus will he discharged through the deliver\'valves.
lVhat is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The valve-box lid or cover D, formed with the valve-seats (l :l in it, and with a suitably-arranged y passage, h, through it, in combination with a series of valves, ff, carried by said lid or cover, and for operation iu relation to the seats dll substantially as specied.
