To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD R. SARGENT and Eonnn'r H. EGGLESTON, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screen-Door Checks, of
which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
Th1s lnventlon relates to door checks, and
more particularly to checks for screen doors and otherlight doors.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, reliable and cheap door check of the pendant type wherein a suspended buifer on the door is thrown by centrifugal force, as the door closes, into contact with the jamb, after which, as the door rebounds, the bufier swings inward to clear the door jamb, and permit the door to close with decreased force. More particularly, it is aimed to provide a door check having improved means for mounting, guiding and limiting movement of the buffer hanger, and provided with an improved form of hanger and an improved form of bufier.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed. 1 p
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a door equipped with a door check embodying our improvements; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of door check; Fig. 3 is a rear view of the check, showing it detached from the door;

Referring to the drawing, the improved door check is shown as comprising a hanger 10, secured to the door 11, by means of a socket piece or cap 12,- and screw 13, and carrying at its lower end a buffer disk 14. The hanger 10 preferably consists of a metal rod or heavy wire having an upper end portion 15, adapted to lie close to the face of the door, and a lower end portion 16, ofi'set from the end portion 15, so as to lie about parallel to the door, at some distance therefrom, the portions 15 and 16 being joined by an integral bent portion 17. The upper end portion. 15 is provided with a hook or eye 18, through which passes the shank of the screw 13, for the purpose of sethe opening 31 in the cap,
fwhich is made of curing the hanger to the door. The eye 18 fits a seat 19 at the under surface of the fastening cap 12, whereby said eye 18 is covered, the eye being guided for oscillation between the seat 19 and the front surface of the door. The pivot for the eye is formed by a flange 30 extending inward around through which the screw 13 is inserted. The fastening cap 12 is provided in its rim portion 12 with a clearance opening 12 for the hanger shank, whereby the hanger is permitted to oscillate about the axis of the screw 13, but, at the same time, limited in its oscillatory movement. The hanger is normally suspendedvertically, as shown in Fig. 3,. and the clearance opening 12 in the rim or flange of the fastening cap permits a slight swinging movement of the hanger on both sides of a vertical planefpassing through the point of suspension. y
In order to securely fiX against dislocation the fastening cap 12, which determines the extentof oscillation of the hanger, said cap is provided on the rim 12 with a spur adapted to penetrate the door and to prevent angular movement of the cap about .its axis.
The bufier 14.- is in the form of a disk rubber, or rubber compound, and is freely rotatable in a horizontal plane on the lower end portion 16 of the hanger. The disk 14 is held on thehanger by means of an upset head 20 on the hanger shank, supporting a washer 21, which in turn supports the disk.
When the door is forcibly closed, the hanger and buffer will be swung outward by centrifugal force, so that the buffer will strike the door jamb 22, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. bounds and is slowed down, the hanger gradually moves back to its vertical position, wherein the buffer 14; clears the door jamb and permits the door to close. swing of the hanger is effectively limited by the slot in the rim of the fastener cap, and said cap suspends and guides the upper end of the hanger for easy movement about the pivot.
' The device may be very readily applied to the door, as the same screw which suspends the hanger secures to the door the cap which guides the hanger eye, and limits the oscillatory movement of the device. As the buffer 14 is free to turn about the hanger OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT,

lVithout limiting ourselves to the construction shown, we claim:
1. A screen door check, comprising a buffer, a hanger therefor having an eye, a cap fitting over said eye, and means to secure the cap to the door, said cap having a clearance opening with a side edge to limit the swing of the hanger; substantially as described.
2. A screen door check, comprising a buffer hanger bent at one end to form an eye, a cap to fit over said eye, a side wall on the cap having a clearance opening for the buffer hanger, adapted to limit the swinging movement of said hanger in both directions, and means for securing the cap and hanger eye to the door; substantially as described.
3. ii. screen door check, comprising a buffer hanger having an eye, and an inclosing cap for said eye adapted for attachment to the door, and having a pivot for said eye, forming a part of said cap; substantially as described.
4.. A screen door check, comprising a butter hanger having an eye, a cap having a flange on which said eye is rotatably supported, and means for securing'said cap to the door; substantially as described.
5. A. screen door check, comprising a buffer hanger having an eye, an inclosing cap for said eye having an opening, an inwardly projecting flange about said opening adapted to extend into said eye, and a member adapted to extend through said opening, and to secure said cap to the door; substantially as described.
6. A screen door check, comprising a hanger rod having substantially parallel upper and. lower end portions offset from each other, the upper end of said rod having an eye, a guiding member for said eye confining the latter between said member and the face of the door, and a buffer on the lower end of the rod; substantially as described.

The combination with a door, of a cap applied to the face of the door and having an opening at its lower part, and a butter device having a shank extending upward into the cap through said opening and suspended. from the door beneath the cap, said opening being formed and located to perinit a swinging movement of the butter device but to limit such swinging movement; substantially as described.
8. The combination with a door, of a cap applied to one face of the door, and a pendant buifer device having a hanger shank pivoted to the door beneath said cap and 3 limited in its swinging movement by engagement with said cap; substantially as described.
