UNITED STATES PATENT orrron.
MARTIN '1. GONVERY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HYDROGARBON-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
Application filed April 18, 1914. Serial No. 832,715.
hydro-carbon burners, the object of the invention being to provide an improved burner in which the oil is forced to spread out into a thin sheet or spray which is thoroughly atomized by steam and commingled with the oxygen of the air to produce a highly combustible and economical fuel.
A further object is to provide improved means for maintaining the nozzle of the oil pipe free from obstruction and without dismantling the burner.
A further object is to provide an improved burner of the character stated of extremely simple, inexpensive construction, strong and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements ofparts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. 7
'In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal vertical section illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section partly in elevation on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a view in longitudinal section on an enlarged scale of the oil distributing nozzle. Fig. 5 is a view in end elevation of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
1 represents my improved burner casing which is of general truncated conical form having at its smaller end, a cylindrical projection 2 adapted to be positioned through an opening 3 ma supporting wall 4 so as to directv the flame into the furnace or other fire box.
The casing 1 is formed of a single casting having integral perforated ears 5 for the reception of bolts 6, said bolts projected through the wall 4 and secured by nuts 7 to clamp the burner casing in position.
The outer larger end of the casing 1 is made with an integral hollow steam head 8 located centrally with respect to the end of the casing, and having an inlet passage 9 ex tending to the side of the casing and adapt ed to be connected to a steam supply pipe 10. The head 8 and the inlet 9 are strengthened by a longitudinal web 11 inside the casing. This end of the casing, entirely around the head, is open for the admission of air, and the head is formed with a central tube 12 in which a burner tube 13 is secured by a set screw 14. This burner tube 13 extends into ,the casingl, is located centrally in the cas 1ng, and terminates at itsinner end short of the inner endof the casing.
In the extreme inner end of the burnertube, I locate my improved nozzle 15 which is rigidly fixed in the end of the burner tube-- in any approved manner. This nozzle has a cylindrical portion 16 fitting within the burner tube, and around this cylindrical an inclined surface 19 against which the oilis directed through a passage 20 in the nozzle.
It will be noted that the beveled surface:
19, at its highest point, is in an approximate alinement with the highest point of passage 20, and the lowest point of the beveled surface is in line with the lowest point of the passage 20, yet a small space 21 is provided between the lower end of the inclined sur face and the passage, so that the oil is permitted to escape from the end of the tube before it strikes the inclined surface. This gives to the oil an impact against the inclined surface of the lip which tends not only to spread it into a thin sheet, but to divide the globules so that they readily commingle with the steam and air. I
The extreme inner end of the passage 20 has a flared mouth 22, so as to direct the end of a cleaning rod 23 into the passage.
This cleaning rod 23 is located centrally in This coupling 24 is of general T- necting the web with the inner face of the casing, and a burner tube projecting through the head into the casing, substantially as de- 15 scribed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
