ACCOUNT-BOOK.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EINAR G. OLSON, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Snohomish, State of lVashington, have invented, a new and useful Improvement in Account-Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain, improvements to be applied to account and other record books having for its purpose-the provision of means whereby the balancing or checking of said accounts or books may be books, and the like.

My invention comprises the novel parts and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing I have shown my invention embodied in the form now preferred by me.

The drawing shows an account book having my invention incorporated therein, the book being opened.

The record sheets 1 may be ruled and rinted according to any form desired.

referably a form that would be adapted for use under some loose-leaf system, although this is not essential. Combined with a series of these record sheets is an index sheet 2, of a width sufliciently greater than that of the record as to provide an exposed vertical edge strip upon which the index and check slips may be secured.

Upon the exposed outer portion of the index sheet 2, is placed a series of holders 3, each designed to receive a removable name-slip l. Each of these name-slip holders is, or may be, independent of each other, except as all are secured to a common base, the index sheet 2. Each, in the form shown, consists of a thin metal plate having its side edges rolled or turned over to form opposed grooves into which is slid the nameslip. These holders are disposed with their Specification of Letters Patent.

length extending horizontally and vertically above each other to formv a vertical column. The width of the name-slips and the location of the holders on the index sheet is such that the slips conform in spacing to the spacing of tabs 7, which are secured to said record sheets, or to the spacing of whatever indexing means are provided for the record sheets. The particular manner of construct-- ing the holders for the name-slips is largely immaterial, the essential thing being that they be arranged in a vertical column and their slips beindependent of the checkslip.

The subdivisions of the index which receive the individual names are each associated in some way with their. respective rec- The manner of doing this as herein illustrated is to provide the record sheets with tabs 7 placed opposite to or in registry with the slip carrying the name.

Associated with the index column is a check slip 6 which extends alongside the column of the index. This is shown as a narrow slip of paper placed within a vertical holder 5 of the same character as those which hold the name slips 4:. This check slip is prefer ably cross ruled to correspond to the spacing of name slips.

The parts above described constitute a unit section. A complete book will consist of as many unit sections as desired.

In use, at the beginning of each business day the check slips 6 are to be renewed, so that they are all free of check marks. Any addition to or subtraction from the balance of any individual account is entered directly in the ledger, and when so entered, a check mark is made upon the check slip opposite the name. When the time arrives to make up the daily balance sheet or record, the

check slips 6 show at a glance what accounts have been changed during the day and it is only necessary to turn to these accounts, the others beingignored. This results in a material saving or time. There is also a material saving of time over the plan which until it is necessary to change their position in the column on account of increase or decrease in the number of accounts requiring a readjustment of names. It is, therefore, possible to have these names typed or print ed, which makes a much neater appearance and adds to the clearness thereof and the rapidity and accuracy With Which it may be read.

I claim as my invention 1. An entry-indicating attachment for account and like record books, comprising a sheet secured to project beyond the vertical outer edges of the record sheets, a series of name-slip holders secured to the projecting part of said sheet to form a vertical column, individual slips insertible in each of said holders, a check-slip holder and a renewable blank check-slip therein extending along one vertical edge of said column of name-slips and ruled horizontally to register with the individual name-slips and adapted to receive arbitrary check marks opposite such accounts as have changed 2. An indexing device for books, compris ing a sheet adapted for insertion in the book and having an edge extended Well beyond the corresponding edge of the record sheets, indexing elements detachably securable on the exposed margin cl: the-said: sheet, a re movable blank cheek-slip ruled horizontally to register With the index elements, and adapted to receive arbitrary check marks opposite such accounts as have changed, and tabs secured to the margins of the record sheets and extending beyond the edges there of, each in position to register With the in dex element for its respective record sheet.

3. In an account book, in combination, record sheets, index tabs secured to and projecting beyond the vertical edges of the record sheets, an index sheet extending beyond the vertical edges of the record sheets, a series of separate name-slip holders secured in horizontal position to said index sheet to form a vertical column at the outer edge of the index sheet, said name-slip holders and the index tabs of the record sheets being placed in registry, a check-slip holder secured to the index sheet and extending vertically the length ofthe record sheets and the column of name-slip holders and situated therebetiveen, and a blank check slip removably inserted in the check-slip holders and adapted to receive check marks opposite such accounts as have changed.
