useful Improvements in Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use i the same.
'Thisinvention relates to new and useful improvements in vises and more especially to those having a double-swivel, whereby they are capable of movement both horizontally and vertically as the case may require during its operation.
A further object of the invention is to construct a vise of this character having a novel arrangement of parts, so connected that they may be readily secured together and taken apart for transportation and which will be securely rigid when ready for use.
A further and important feature and object of the invention is to construct a swivel vise having a supporting member, a pair of spaced plates extending vertically therefrom, means for moving the base in a concentric path and a novel clamping member secured between the plates for oscillating movement, said clamping member having a self-adjusting jaw adapted to securely receive objects of irregular contour,
The invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and clearly specified in the appended claims.

Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of a spring washerv adapted to hold two of the clutch disks separated. Fig. 9 is a sectional view on the line 9 9 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail there is shown a bed-plate 10 adapted to'be secured to a table or other support by bolts 11 or other attaching means, said bed-plate having a base 12 rotatably mounted thereon through the medium of a central pivot bolt 13 which extends through vertical apertures in the bed-plate and base and is re tamed in position by a securing nut 14. The bed-plate and base are preferably circular in contour and said bed-plate is provided with a clrcular groove 15 in its-upper surface having a series of notches 16 therein and adapted to receive the lower end of an adjusting screw 17 which is threaded through the base and which is provided with an enlarged head 18 through which is loosely mounted a turning bar 19 so that as the base is -rotated upon the bolt 13 the lower end of the adjusting screw 17 may be brought into engagement with the notches and thereby retain the base rigidly in such position. This adjustment in a horizontal planeand in a circular path, permits movement of the clamping member so that the work held thereinmay be disposed insuch a line that another vise may be used in connection therewith if necessary or otherwise as desired. The base 12 is formed with a pair of vertical uprights 20 and 21 which are disposed in parallel relation and are in the form of plates, the plate 21 being preferably at tached t0 the central raised portion of the base by means of screws or the like 22 so as to rigidly hold the same in position and per mit itsdetachment if necessary. Each of theplates 20 and 21 is provided with anan nular depression 23 which terminates in a smaller rectangular depression 24, the plate 20 being alsoprovided with a rectangular depression 25 in itsouter surface so, as to receive the similar. shaped head 26 of astem 27 so as to retain the stemagainst rotation when the parts are in a clamped position.

The plates are each provided with transverse openings having smooth bores and adapted to receive an externally threaded sl eve 28 which upon itsinner wall is threaded as shown at 29 to receive a correspondingly threaded end of the stem 27 and said sleeve is adapted to be rotated .by a turning bar 30 loosely disposed through ahead 31 formed thereon. A clutch disk 32 having a'central non-threaded opening mounted upon the sleeve 28 is provided with a boss 83 adapted to fit within the rectangular depression 24 of the plate 21 while the disk proper is received within the circular depression 23, thus seating the disk within the area of the plate for holding the same against rotation. A disk 34 is also mounted upon the sleeve 28 and provided with a threaded central opening adapted to engage the treads of the sleeve and each of the disks is provided with radial projections 35 adapted to coact when the parts are clamped together. A, disk 36 similar to the disk 84 is received within the depressions in the plate 20 and is adapted to coact with a disk 87 similar to the disk 32, the inner two disks being received within depressions corresponding to the depressions 23 and 24, formed in a central plate 38 upon its opposite faces and having a communicating bore 39 for receiving the threaded sleeve 28 and in order to hold the respective pairs of coacting disks separated, I provide spring washers 40 which are mounted upon the stem between the disks and adapted to normally expand when pressure is removed from their outer faces. Thus when it is desired to adjust the central plate 38 in a vertical plane, the turning bar 30 is rotated to draw the head of the stem 27 into the depresion 25 and to cause the disks 84 and 36 to move therewith and clamp the coacting faces of the disks in engagement thus binding the central plate in its adjusted position as will be found desirable.
The central plate 38 forms a support for the clamping member and for this purpose is provided with outwardly directed flanges 41 at its upper end to which is secured the opposite sides of a stationary member 42 by means of screws or the like 48. The upper end of the central plate 38 is also provided with a vertical extension 44 having a reduced neck portion 45 and a central threaded bore in which an operating screw 46 is operable, the extension 44 being also slidable in the bar 47 which has sliding movement between the two side faces of the stationary member 42. The operating screw 46 has a head 48 which is rotated by a turning bar 49 and said head is further provided with a circumscribing recess 50 adapted to receive a plate 51 secured to the face of the movable jaw 52 so as to retain the screw from movement relative to said jaw in sliding the same through the stationary member 42.
Each of the jaw faces of the movable jaw 52 and the stationary jaw 53 is provided with hardened steel surfaces 54 formed by rabbeting the coacting faces of the jaw and fitting the plates 54 thereto by means of welding or other suitable process and in order to positively hold these parts in position they are formed F-shaped the upper portions being beveled as shown at 55 and the central projections being dove-tailed as shown at 56. The stationary jaw 58 is also capable of automatic adjustment to fit an object which may be tapered or of irregular contour, and for this purpose said stationary jaw is formed as a separate part from the member through which the movable jaw slides and is formed with a beveled end 57 abutting a correspondin surface by reducing the member 42 upon its upper surface and said jaw is further provided with an extension 58 fitted in a sub-joining recess 59 in the member 42 so as to permit lateral movement of the jaw 53 through the circular contour of the coacting faces of the jaw and the member 42. To anchor'the jaw 53 for such movement, a swivel pin 60 is extended centrally through the jaw on its plate portion so that said jaw will automatically adjust itself to the shape of the object held between the jaws, although it is obvious that by the provision of a pin 61, the aw may be held in parallel relation to the movable aw 52 when desired.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided novel and ef licient means for adjusting the several parts of the vise and for clamping the same in vertical and horizontal planes as may be desired. It is also apparent that the centrally supporting plate 38 will be positively held in its inclined position and by reason of the radial projections which are divided upon the disks, it is apparent that a very minute adjustment may be accomplished and in combination with the other features of adjustment of the aws forming the clamping member, it is apparent that vari ous objects may be e'liiciently held for working operation. It will also be seen that the lower end of the plate 38 is of circular contour, the same as the upper ends of the plates 20 and 21 thus permitting the said plate 88 and vise or clamping member carried thereby to be swung in its various positions.

In a vise, the combination with a bedplate suitably attached; of a base rotatably mounted upon the bed-plate, an adjusting screw carried by the base and engageable in a groove in the bed-plate, said groove having coincident recesses to receive the adjusting member, spaced vertical plates carried by the base, a central plate supported between said vertical plates, a clamping member carried by the central plate, and means for adjusting the central plate in a vertical plane, said means comprising coacting clutch disks, and means having threaded engagement with the clutch disks for moving said disks in contact to bind said central plate in its adjusted posi tion.
2. In a vise, the combination with a bedplate suitably attached; of a base rotatably mounted upon the bed-plate, an adjusting screw carried by the base and engageable in a groove in the bedplate, said groove having coincident recesses to receive the adjusting member, spaced vertical plates carried by the base, a central plate supported between said vertical plates, a clamping member carried by the central plate, and means for adjusting the central plate in a vertical plane, said means comprising coacting clutch disks, a threaded sleeve extending through the plates, a stem having its extremity threaded in the sleeve, certain of said disks having threaded bores and the other of said disks having non-threaded bores, and means for rotating the sleeve to hold the disks in contact in binding relation to the central plate.

In a vise, the combination with a bedplate suitably attached; of a base rotatably mounted upon the bed-plate, an adjusting screw carried by the base and engageable in a groove in the bed-plate, said groove having coincident recesses to receive the adjusting member, spaced vertical plates carried by the base, a central plate supported between said vertical plates, a clamping member carried by the central plate, and means for adjusting the central plate in a vertical plane, said means comprising 00- acting clutch disks, a threaded sleeve extending through the lates, a stem having its extremity threaded in the sleeve, certain of said disks having threaded bores and the other of said disks having non-threaded bores, a turning bar carried by the threaded sleeve, certain of said disks being adapted for movement into depressions formed in the plates to retain the same against rota- .tion and means for separating the disks upon the withdrawal of pressure.
4. In a vise, the combination with a base suitably supported, carried by the base, a central member fitted between said uprights, said central member having a non-threaded bore provided with of a pair of uprights separated, and a clamping member carried by the central member, said clamping mem-. ber being adjustable.
5. In a vise of the character described, a base rotatably mounted, means for holding said base in its adjusted rotated position, a supporting member carried by the base, a
stationary member secured to the support,
said stationary member having an opening therethrough, a movable jaw adjustably mounted in the stationary member, a jaw adjustably supported upon the stationary member for coaction with the movable j aw, and means to permit automatic adjustment of the jaw carried by and with relation to the stationary member to hold objects of various contours.
