.1 UNITED STATES PATENT-OFFICE.
STANISTAW LAIBEDZKI, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADJUSTABLE SERVING-TABLE AND BOOK-REST.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANIsrAw L BEDZKI, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Serving-Tables and Book-Rests; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in serving tables and more particularly to those which are rendered adjustable for the-purpose of providing means whereby a bookor other light object, may be supported over a bed, for the use of a patient therein.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means for yieldingly retaining the table top in horizontal position or in tilted position.
A secondary object is to construct said means in such a manner as to cause a table top to be automatically secured in horizontal position.
IVith the above and other minor objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved table, the top thereof being shown in a horizontal position; Fig. 2 is an end View with the parts arranged as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the table top tilted; and Fig. 1 is a detail horizontal section on the line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar View on line 55 of Fig. 3.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown my improved table top supported upon a base 1 and a standard 2, the latter rising from one end of said base. The base 1 may be of any suitable construction and is preferably mounted upon casters 3. As customary, with devices of this character, the standard is rendered vertically adjustable by 1 providing a rigid member 4:, supported by the base 1, and a movable member 5 vertically slidable within said member 4 and adapted to be adjustably secured therem by means of a set screw 6 or other suitable fastening.
Coming now more particularly to details of the present invention, the upper end of the standard 2 is preferably beveled on its Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov, 10, 1914,
Application filed April 2, 1914. 1 Serial No. 829,082.
opposite sides as indicated at 7, one member 8 of a-hinge, rising from the center of said standard at the point where the beveled surfaces 7 meet. The complementary member 9 of said hinge is carried by acleat 1O whlch is rigidly secured to the under side of a suitable top 11. p The hinge members 8 and 9 are pivotallyunited in the usual or any appropriate'manner and may be of anyde sired construction provided the table top 11 is allowed to tilt in either direction.
For the purpose of retaining the top 11 in horizontal position or in any one of its tilted positions, I provide a pair of resilient springs 12 which are rigidly secured at their outer ends to a flange 13, said flange depending from the top 11' and the inner edge of the cleat 10 and being braced by an ornamental bracket 14. The inner ends of the springs 12 are provided with laterally offset portions 15 which project loosely through a slot 16, the latter being formed through the flange 13. When the table top is in horizontal position, the offset portions 15 are adapted to contact withthe opposite sides of the-movable member 5 of the standard 2. WVhen, however, it becomes necessary totilt the top 11, one of the springs 12 may be depressed to allow its lateral portion 15 to disengage the member 5, whereupon said top may be tilted to the desired angle. During this tilting operation, the friction between the depressed spring and the inner edge of said member 5 will be suflicient to yieldingly retain said top in any one of its adjusted positions. When it is again necessary to return the top 11 to its normal horizontal position, the springs will automatically engage the op- .posite sides of the memberfv when said top is swung to the proper angular relation thereto.
Fromthe foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seenthat I have produced an extremely simple, yet efficient serving table, which may be used to equal advantage as a support for books or other light articles.
I have described my invention with considerable minuteness, but I do not wish to be limited to details of construction, other than those amplified in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A table comprising an upright support, a table top hingedly' connected thereto, a
flange depending from said table at right angles to the axis of the hinge, and flat leaf springs secured at their outer ends to said flange, the free ends of said springs being out of contact With said flange and contacting With the opposite sides of said support, thereby preventing movement of said top until depressed, and being adapted to frictionally contact With said support when said top is tilted.
2. A table comprising an upright support, a table top hingedly connected thereto, a flange depending from said table at right angles to the axis of the hinge, said flange having a slot, and fiat leaf springs secured at their outer ends to said flange, the free ends of said springs being bent laterally and extending through said slot, said laterally extending portions contacting With the opposite sides of said support and preventing movement of said top until said springs are depressed, whereupon the latter Will frica stop support depending from said table top, and a pair of flat leaf springs disposed at right angles to the axis of the hinge and having their outer ends secured. to said support, the free ends of said springs being adapted to contact with the opposite sides of said standard until one of said springs is depressed, whereupon the top may be tilted and whereupon the depressed spring will frictionally contact With said standard.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
