Description

N-FETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTONV D cA but JACOB LEWIS WHITE, OF HERNANDO, MISSISSIPPI.
Letters Patent No. 111,706, dated February 7, 1871 antedated January 28, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAV AND COTTON-PRESSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AcOB LEWIS WHITE, ofHernando, in the county of De Soto and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and improved Hay and Cotton- Press; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing making a part of thisspecication, in which- Figure lis a sectional, and
Figure 2 an end elevation.
Thisinvention relates to a press in which the follower moves upward in the box in order to compress the bale.
The invention consists chiefly in the combination of toggles at the end of the press-box, with a horizontal frame loosely inclosing-the press-box, to which frame the upper extremity of the toggles are jointed, and with th'e follower, which' is connected with the upper ends of the toggles.
In the drawing- A is the press-box'.
a a, the lower levers of the toggles, which are jointed at their lower ends to the foundation B.
1- a', thc upper levers ofthe toggles.
Z1 is the shaft, through and around which passes the rope c, that connects the lower extremities ofthe levers r o.
By connecting the toggles with the frame above the follower, instead of directly with the follower, I materially reduce the distance between the outer ends of the levers lr r when the follower is dow-n, and thus render the machinery more compact. Moreover,- if the toggles were connected directly with the follower, thejoints between the follower and levers r would be -nearly or quite in line with the jointsbetween the levers lr and a, when the follower was down, and, con'- sequently, the rising of the Vfollower would be more ditiicult. y
Ihe upper lever r of each toggle is bifnrcated, as shown iu lig. 2. v
The lower lever Of each toggle is composedof two separate parallel pieces, a a, placed at ak suitable distance apart, and connected by a cross-bolt, nfl/,Land a cross-block, u, projects upward between the two side pieces a a., and enters the 'space between the branches r r, to which branches the tongue o is pivotcd by the bolt an. This construction stiifens and strengthens the toggles.
Having thus described my invention,
Vhat I claini as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination or" the press-box A, sliding frame la, inclosing the press-box and sliding up and down outside the same, follower h, connecting-rods i, and toggles a o fr, in the manner and for the purpose specified; A f
2. The combination of the bifnrcated lever 1 with the lower doublc lever a (t, provided with the crossblock n and tongue o, as and for the purpose set forth .JACOB LEWIS WHITE.
