, Be it known that I, MAxTAIGMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the; city of New York, borough'of'Manhat- '-.,tan, in .the'county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Starting Box, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the "present invention has in view are: to provide a boxof the character indicated, wherein an electrical connections are protectively covered; to provide a resistance unit opera- ,bly constructed. independent of the containing boxtherefor to provide a terminal panel arranged to receive theelectrical supply circuit leads; and to simplify the construction and reduce the cost thereof.

D6807ipti0n.:-Wh6n constructed 1n accordance with the present invention, the box 10 supports what may be termeda local circuit, in that the' terminal contact 11 and the spring wiper 12 are so ported on the frame of said box, bein insu ated therefrom by apad 13, as shown est in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The box 10 supports a starting lever 14, providin as a pivot therefor a post 15 to receive the ub 16. of said lever. 21 and 22. The brush 19 is yieldingly pressed on'the surface of said buttons by a 'spring23.
The construction and arrangement ofthe parts just mentionedis more fully disclosed in an application for Letters Patent of the United States, for improvements in starting boxes, filed by me April 9, 1914, and bearing Serial No. 830,675, to which application cross reference is here made.
By reference to the application mentioned, it will be seen that the lever 14 and parts connected therewith constitute a'single element or unit in a starting box constructed and arranged in accordance with'the present in-' vention, the assemblage of said lever and box being made when said lever and parts are dissociated from the box and resistance unit. With this in view, itwill also be noted that the completed starting box as herein shown is constituted, by three elements or units, to wit, the lever 14, the box 10, and the resist ance unit in which is incorporated the buttons 20, 21 andr22. In the resistance unit, as best seen in. Figs. 3and 4 of the drawings, the panel '24 is supported between metal lugs 26 and 27 thereof. At the end of the framing member 25, a circular flange 29 is" formed, saidflange being furnished'with an 1 inset pocket30 to hold a nut.31,which, when manipulatedon a bolt'32, sets the flange 29 tight against one end of a resistance coil spool 33. The op osite end of the spool33 .isheld by a stan ing cheek-piece- 34, with .WhlCh. the member 28 is provided. The cheek-piece 34 is provided with a recess similar to the pocket 30 to hold a nut similar to that shown in the drawings and designated by the numeral 31. The cheek-piece 34 is 'upraised above the spool 33, and is provided at the upper edge with an offset 35. As best seen in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the offset 35 has formed therein a pocket 36 provided to receive the head 37 of a binding screw 38. ,E'Preferably the spool 33 and the panel. 24

there is provided a certain latitude of adjustment necessary for the fitting of the framing members and panels connected therewith, to the box 10. As disclosed in the application above referred to, the box 10 is provided with brackets having tapped perforations to receive set screws 41.
The offset is provided at its outer edge with an overhanging wall 44, the oflice of which is to maintain the service disposition of the bracket terminal 45. The terminal 45 is held firmly to the offset by the screw 38 and nut 46. To insulate said bracket from its offset, a packing 47 is placed between the surfaces of the bracket and offset. The screw 38 is insulated from the offset 35 by the bushings formed of insulating material, as shown best in Fig. 5 of the draw- The purpose of the insulated construction is to prevent the electric current introduced by the jumper wire 48 to said bracket from passing to the cheek-piece 34 and from thence to the box 10.
The screws are employed to hold binding posts 49, 50 and 51, which binding posts, as shown best in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings, extend from the back of the panel 24. To the firstmentioned post, the main supply wire 52 is operatively connected. To the last-mentioned post, the opposite main wire 53 is operatively connected, and to the intermediate post 50, a shunt wire 54 is operatively connected. It will be understood that the shunt wire is only used where the installation is such as to require its employment. The wires 52, 53 and 54 are bound together to form a cable 55, which extends through a gasket 56 of suitable insulating material in the side of the box 57 formed on the back cover 58 of the box 10. Preferably, the box 57 has elevated or raised walls to permit the formation therein of the orifice in which the gasket 56 is placed. The box 57 is normally closed by a drop cover 59, which cover is mounted on a pivot pin 60 to fall into position against the standing edge 61 with which the box is provided.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the resistance unit is installed in the box 10, the wires 52, 53 and 54 may be connected in service with the binding posts 49, 51 and 50, respectively. Also, it will be seen that when the cover 59 is permitted to drop, the box 57 is closed, and danger arising from contact of the personal clothes of the operator with the posts 49, 50 and 51 is avoided. i
From the foregoing it will be seen that the resistance unit may be fully connected with the electric source prior to installing it in the box 10, if such be desired, or may be installed as a unit, and the wires 52, 53 and 54 be thereafter operatively connected with the unit. In any case, the current entering suitable means structurally connected with the front cover of the box 10, as fully disclosed in the application above referred to. From the contact 11, the current is transferred to the spring wiper 12, and from thence to the plate 17, extension 18 and brush 19 of the lever 14. Normally, the brush 19 rests upon one or other of the buttons 20, which are normally disconnected from the resistance coil on the spool 33. The button 21 is connected by means of a jumper strap, with a contact band 63. The shunt wire 54 is also connected with this button by the short extension 64 of the jumper strap 62. The succeeding buttons 22 are each connected by straps 65, 66, and 67, respectively, with the resistance coil on the spool 33, and the latter strap, by means of its extension 67 is directly connected with the binding post 51 and wire 53, so that when thebrush 19 rests upon the button 22 corresponding therewith, the coil on the spool 33 is cut out.
While I have herein described the resistance unit as having the panel 24 and the spool 33 connected by metal framing members, it will be understood that I may substitute for said spool, a spool or form integrally formed with or rigidly connected to the panel 24, upon which extension or spool a resistance coil may be wound, but in every event, it will be seen, the resistance unit referred to has incorporated therewith the binding posts for the current supply, and is totally concealed within and thoroughly insulated from the box 10.
It will be seen that when employing a structure such as herein disclosed, by the removal of the cotter pin 68 the elements may be separately removed from the box 10 in the manner as follows, to wit: The lever 14 and parts connected therewith may be lifted from the post 15, becoming automatically disengaged from the wiper 12. By manipulating the screws 41, the resistance unit may be lifted forward out of the box 10, the cable 55 being drawn through the gasket 56. The unit in this position may be repaired or replaced, or disconnected from the current supply wires and removed or replaced. lVithout removing the lever 14 and parts connected therewith, the operator may at any time, by lifting the cover 59, ex-
pose for purpose of alteration or repair, the binding posts 49, 50 and 51, the screws whereof may be tightened or the terminals thereof brightened.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7, there is substituted for the framing members 25 and 28 of the preferred form, framing members 69 and 7 O. 5. A starting box, comprising a switch panel formed of insulating material; a plurality of terminal buttons; a resistance coil having sections thereof operatively connected with said buttons; and a plurality of current service binding posts permanently mounted in said panel to receive a socketed service binding posts permanently mounted l in said panel to receive a socketed plug connector, embodied in an electrlc service supp y; and a containing box for said panel having a pocketed opening protecting said binding posts and for receiving said connector.

A starting box, comprising a switch panel formed of insulating material; a plurality of terminal buttons; a resistance coil having sections thereof operatively connected with said buttons; a. plurality of current service binding posts permanently mounted in said panel to receive a socketed plug connector, embodied in an electric service supply; an extension of said panel for mounting said posts; and a containing box for said panel having an open pocketto hold said extension and connector, the outer edge of said pocket extending beyond the meeting wall of said extension and said connector.
