Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 3, 1906. Serial No. 341,918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN B. BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented new' and useful Improvements in Refiector- Sockets, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

Another object of my invention is to provide means in a socket of this character, whereby access may be readily had to the binding posts thereof.
I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings one form of socket for the purpose of disclosing my invention, and in said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my socket with a part of the same broken away to show the construction; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4.& of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a partial view of a modified form of base.
In the construction of my invention I provide a base 1, of minimum transverse section and preferably formed of porcelain. This base is recessed or cut away as at 2 at its top, and the central portion of a metallic strip 3 rests therein, having its ends 4 bent downwardly. The extremities of the ends 4 project slightly beyond the center of the base, and are arranged away from the sides thereof so they may spring. A screw 5 having its head bearing upon the upper side of said plate 3 extends downwardly through the base and screws the plate in position. A threaded lamp receiving shell 6 is arranged on either side of the base 1, and is secured thereto by means of a screw 7 which passes through the base and connects the two shells. The head of the screw bears upon an inturned portion 8 of one of the shells and screws into a corresponding inturned portion on the opposite shell. The side of the base opposite the screw 7 is recessed or cut away as at 9, and the central portion of a metallic strip 10 rests therein, being held in position by a screw '11, the head of which bears uponthe top of said strip, and the threaded end of which extends to thebase. A preferably cylindrical casing 15 surrounds the shells and an insulating sheath 16 is interposed between the casing and the shells. The casing 15 is preferably formed of two pieces which telescope uponone another, and form an inclosing casing for the lamp socket.

which extends at right angles to the axis of the shells *6 and has formed in its lower end channels 18 through which may pass the supply wires of the socket. pair of contact plates 20, having angular ex- 1 tensions 21 with which the ends of the screws 11 and 5 are arranged to engage, whereby the screws are mechanically held in position and electrical connection is established between the contact plates 20 and the contact members of the lalnp. The contact plates 20 carry a pair of binding posts 21, by which the supply wires of the socket are attached to the lates. The channels 19 at points on the sides of the off-set 17 are opened whereby access may be obtained through the sides of the offset to the binding posts arranged therein. A preferably cylindricalcasing 22 surrounds the off-set 17 and screws upon screw threads 23 formed 011 the extension over the openings in the sides of the offset whereby the binding posts are suitably inclosed. By raising the easing 22 ready access may be had to the binding posts. At the bottom of the oft-set 17 is formed a flange 23 having openings 24 formed therein, through which screws may pass for securing the socket in position. y In the modification illustrated in Fig. 5, I have shown a different form of base having a projection .25 formed thereon, below the flange 23which may fit into an opening in a suitable casing in which the supply wires are arranged.
Having thus described my invention what mounted I'claim as new and desire to secure by Letmally closing said last-named means.
2. A lamp socket comprising a lamp receiver and center contact, an insulating base associated therewith and having a supporting off-set substantially at right angles to the axis of the lamp receiver, said off-set having transverse channels in the bottom thereof, through which the supply wires are arranged to pass, and recesses communicating with said channels, binding posts arranged in said recesses, andv means for obtaining access to said binding posts from the sides of the off-set.

A lamp socket comprising a lamp recelver and center contact, an msulatmg base assoc1ated therewlth having a supportmg off-set substantially at right angles to the axis ofthe lamp receiver, said off-set having a flange for securing the same upon a suitable support and having recesses formed therein, binding posts arranged in said recesses, means for obtaining access to said binding posts from the sides of said ofi-set,

4. A lamp socket comprising a lamp resupply wires are arranged to pass, and recesses communicating with said channels, binding posts arranged in said recesses, and means for obtaining access to said binding posts at the front of the flange.
5. A lamp socket comprising an insulating base, a pair of lamp receivers and associated contacts arranged on opposite sides of said base, a supporting off-set formed on said base at substantially right angles to the axis of said lamp receivers, said ofi-set having recesses formed therein, binding posts mounted in said recesses, means for obtaining access to said binding posts from the sides of the olT-set, and a rotarily mounted cover-piece normally closing said last named means.
