The object of this invention is to provide a fastener for handle joints adapted to be seated in the abutting surfaces of the handle-piece and furcations.

Another object is to provide a fastener for handle joint comprising an annulus having opposing roughened surfaces adapted to en- I gage the abutting surfaces of the abutting members to be joined, with a further object of wholly embedding the annulus or ferrule within the handle-piece.

Other novel features of construction and arrangement of parts are made apparent by the accompanying drawings, illustrating a preferred form of embodimentof this invention, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of the upper end of a bifurcated or D handle showing my improved fastening device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 is a view partly in section showing the device applied in a different manner to another form of handle.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be noted that the handle is bifurcated to form two oppositely disposed limbs or furcations 1 and 2, having a transverse handle-piece 3 supported between their upper ends, said furcations and handle-piece being secured to-' Specification of Letters Patent. - rial at the base or bottom of the groove 9 and the opposingtangs 7 on the opposite edge of the annulus seat into the material of the abutting surface'of the limbs or furcations of the handle. These opposing roughened edges or tangs of the annulus serve as va means for preventing the handle piece 8 from turning, and the annulus by reason of its tubular formation functions as I a ferrule preventing splitting of the joined members.

Fig. 3v shows a handle-piece 11 as having a single abutting surface 12 provided with a groove or recess 13. The abutting surface bedded in the wood of the handle and does not present any metal or edges to the injury of the users hands or detract from the finish of the handle. While I have shown my invention as applied to handles its adaptation for use in joining two members of any form having abutting surfaces is ob vious, and where it is desirable to prevent any relative turning of the members. It is also obvious that the annulus may assume a shape other than circular as shown, to conform to the shape of the handle-piece.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States k 1. device of the nature disclosed co1n= bining a bifurcated handle having its furcations in separated and spaced relation, a transverse handle-piece interposed between the furcations, a tubular metal annulus embedded in the end of the handle-piece, and provided with opposed roughened edges adapted to seat in the material of the furcations and handle-piece, and a binding rod passingthrough the furcations and handle- Copies of this patent may be obtained for the binding rod, a tubular metal annulus Wholly embedded in each recess and tangs formed on opposite edges of the annuli adapted to seat in the material of the furcations and handle-piece to prevent the handle-piece from turning.
