In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional detail of a car, the discharging door being shown by solid lines in closed position and by dotted lines in its open position; Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation of the car lshowing the door in closed position, some of the parts being omitted for the sake of clearness; and Figs. 3 and 4 are details of the door holding mechanismshown in different positions. y
There is represented at 10 one of the center sills of al car; at 11 one of its transverse sills; at l2 its floor and at 13 its side Wall.
In the construction as illustrated the discharge doors, one of which is represented at 11, are hinged, as shown at 15, adjacent to the center sill and close against the outer frame Work of the car. These doors are controlled by a -shaft 16 journaled longitudinally of the car in suitable bearings, as 17, 18, here shown as lnounted upon the outer ends of the transverse sills though the precise location of the shaft is not of the es sence of the invention and it may be carried bv any portion of the outer framing of thevcar. A chain 22 is attached at one end to each of the drums, as shown at 23, and at its other end to the outer edge of the door as Vrepresented at 21.1. Ay suitable rest, as'25, maybe provided to supportthe door when in open position and the chain is of such length that it will permit the door to drop-thereto. The
shaft 16 is manually turned v-by means of a lever 26 swiveled upon one of its ends and carrying a reversible pawl 27 which coplerates Witha ratchet IWheel 28 fixed upon the shaft, a holding paw'l 29 being provided to prevent the shaft from turning as the lever ismoved backwardly. The lever 26 comprises a short socketed member as shown' and la'removablebar 30 adapted to be inserted withinthe socket. The last or outer element 31 of thev chain 22 is in the form of a hook pivotallyattached to the door and adapted to engagenthe shaft 16 when the door is closed and thereby support the iveightfof the door. and the load resting upon it, relieving the ratchet mechanism from this duty.
In order. that the hook may have a firm bearing uponthe shaft and be freed from a tendency to slip from it, the shaft is squared at the end of the drum and the nose of the hook is provided With fr lat face asv shown at 82'. A radial lug '38 on the drum 19 engages the arm 34 projecting laterally from the nose of the hook as the door approaches a closed position, forcing the hook outwardly'so that it Will clear the shaft in its upward movement. A finger 35 formed on the drum thereupon engages the rearward side of the arm 34 and forces the nose of the hook forwardly over the shaft. As illustrated, the laterally projecting arm 34 is in the form of a loop and serves the further purpose of attaching the last link (proper) of the chain to the hook element. The door being thus brought to the closed position the load is supported directlyby the hook, dependence being no longer placed upon the retaining pavrl, the finger in itself constituting means for-preventing the hook from arr being disengaged from the shaft so long as the latter is locked against rotation. When it is desired to discharge the load, the pa-Wl 29 is thrown back out of engagement vvith the ratchet wheel 28, the pawl 27 is reversed, and the lever lbeing noW actuated the shaft a chain connecting the shaft with is turned in the op osite direction, the lug 33 bearing outwar ly'against the arm 34,
and forcing 'the hook 31 from the shaft' whereupon the door drops to the rest 25' under the influence of the load.
We claim as our invention,-
1. In a dumplcalgin combination, a downwardly 'swinging door, a shaft having a fiat side, and being located above the lane of the door when in closed' position, a ook attached to the door and having a flat faced nose engageable with the flat face of the shaft, and a chain attached to thel'shaft and to the hook.
2. A downwardly swinging door, a shaft, a chain connecting the shaft with the door, the element of the chain adjacent the door being a hook adapted to take over the shaft, and a deiecting lug on the shaft-engageable with the nose of the hook on its approach to the shaft. I
3. A downwardly swinging door, a shaft, a chain connecting the shaft with the door,
the element of the chain adjacent the door being a hook adapted to take over the sha-ft, and a finger carried by the shaft and engageable back of an appurtenance of the hook for forcing the nose of the hook over the shaft.
4. A downwardly swinging door, a shaft, the door,

and means for deecting the hook from the shaft on its approach thereto.

A downwardly swinging door, a shaft, a chain connecting the shaft with the door, the element of the chain adjacent the door being a hook adapted to take over the shaft, a lateral rojection on the hook, and projections on t le shaft for engaging the front and rear faces of thc lateral projection as the hook approaches the shaft.
(3. A downwardly swinging door, a shaft, a hook carried by the door and adapted to take over the sha1' t and having a lateral rojection, u finger carried by the shaft an engageable with the rear face of the projection and means for locking the shaft against rotation.
7. A downwardly swinging door, a shaft, al hookcarried Ab the door and adapted to take over the sha t, and having a lateral projection, projections on the shaft between which the projection on the hook enters, means for locking the shaft and means for rotating the shaft.
