Specification of Letters Patent. Application med March 1 5, 19.13. Serial No. 754,512.
Patented-Nov'. 1o, 1914.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that l, EDWARD PossoN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
-The principal object of my` invention is to provide a new and improved side door for railway freight cars.
Another object of my invention is to provide an outside doorl tor a railway freight car that will make va grain-tight closure.
Others objects of invention relate to various features and advantages, and all of these will be lmade apparent in the follow-y ing specification and claims, taken in connection with lthe accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, l have illustrated one specific embodiment of my invention, so that its nature and advantages may be clearly illustrated.
rlhe invention is defined in the kappended claims. g
Referring to the drawings Figure l is a general side elevation. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2 o` Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. tis aside elevation of the car wall surrounding the door opening, certain elements adjacent the side and bottom edges being, removed to show other parts moreclearly. Fig; 5 isa perspective view of a guide clip for one side of the door opening'. `F ig. 6.is a perspective view of a guide clip forjthe other side of the door opening. r
Referrin to the drawings, the side wall 25 of the reight car has thedoor opening 26 adapted to be closed by a door 27, which, in the construction shown, comprises upright and transverse wooden frame meintwo of which, 30 and 82, are on the outside, and two more o. which, "31 and 33, are on the inside of said frame members. The-'parts ot the door are held together by rivets or bolts through the plates and through the intermediate frame members.Y The door is supported below by rollers adapted to run on a track of suitable construction to form aain tight closure along the bottom edge of the door and above the door opening any overhanging lip `58 spaced from the wall 25 is adapted to vform a ygrain ltight closure 'along the upper edge of the door. The 'handles SQ and 86 are adapted for use in manipulatlng the door on its supporting track.
. The above mentioned features constitute no part of the present invention and are shown and described merely as a basis for illustrating one form of my improved means for forming a guide closure along the front and rear edges of the door.
The side post 60 of the door opening has the door jamb 50 and the iron strip 61 attached thereto by a bolt 64 thus forming a vertical channel lto receive` the edge of the door. The corresponding edge of the door has its metal plates bent in a little as indicated at 68. A' series of clips 62 are attached to the post 60 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The door post 65 on the other side of the door opening has a part of .its outer face cut away, as indicated at 69, and a metal strip 66 is attached-by means of the bolt 67 so as to'form a channel 69. lnclined metal clips 68 are applied as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The 'corresponding edge of the door has ametal strip 70 attached by the rivets 72 and spaced inwardly from the door by the strip 7l so that it will enter the channel 69. 'i
It will be apparent` that the clips 62 and 68 serve tocrowd the door outwardly `just at its final closure so asto make a grain vtight closure between the side strips 61 .and 69 and the corresponding yparts of the door. A grain tight closure is thus automatically formed when the dooris closed, and it will be evident that after thecar is filled with grain the weight of said the clips in maintainin such closure.
WVhile. l haveV described a specific form which my invention may take, it will be understood that l do not Wish totbe limited thereto, except as4 defined by the appended claims. l
l claim: y
1. In combination, a wall 4having a door opening therethrough, vertical channels on the sides of the door opening. a lip on` one side edge of the door, said channels being adapted to receive.. the corresponding side edge of the door and lsaid lip respectively, and spaced clips to crowd the ydoorand Vlip tightly against .the outer walls of said channels when said door vis closed.
2. In combination, 4a yWall having a door` grain will assistl kopening therethrough Awith .door posts at the sides thereof, a door jamb attached to one post, a lip attached to said door jamb, said parts being disposed to leave a channel between the door post and the said lip, a door with its edge adapted to enter said channel, and inclined cllps attached to the post within the channel so as to force the ledge of the door against the said lip.
3. In combination, a Wall having a door opening therethrough' with door posts at the sides thereof, a door jamb attached to one post, a lip attached to said door jamb, a door with its edge adapted to enter the channel within said lip, a second. lip attached to the other door post and projecting y therefrom in the same direction as said first named lip and outwardly from said Wall, said door having an op ositely directed lip attached to its inner e ge and adapted to engage said second named lip when said door edge engages said first named lip, and spaced clips to crowd the door outwardly when the door is closed.
`a lip 4. In combinatlon, Va wall having a door opening therethroughwith ldoor posts at the sides thereof, sald door posts pro'ecting outwardly from said Wall, one of sai posts havin a portion thereof cut away on the side t ereof away from said door opening,
attached to said door post and projectlng therefrom adjacent said cut-away portion, inclined mtal strips secured in said cut-awayportion opposite said lip, said lip being so dis osed that a channel is formed between sai lip and said inclined lmetal strips, and a door having a metal strip se cured thereto and spaced therefrom, said last-named metal strip being adapted to t into said channel when the door is closed.
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name.
EDWARD PossoN.
