GEORGE J. BOHLANDER, ROBERTS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALIFTO DANIEL i IE.` BOHLANDER, OF ROBERTS, ILLINOIS.
Hoe-THOUGH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. Boi-{LAN- Dnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roberts, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hog-Trough, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hog troughs.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of hog troughs, and to provide a simple and inexpensive hog trough of strong and durable construetion, adapted to be readily swung over upon one side upon the ground or other supporting surface to enable it to be easily and quickly emptied and to arrange it in a convenient position for scrubbing or otherwise cleaning its interior, whereby the trough may be maintained in a perfectly sanitary condition.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :MFigure 1 as an end elevation of a hog trough, constructed in aecordance with this invention, the trough being shown in an upright position in full lines and in a partially inverted position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the hog trough. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view on the line fl--TL of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.`
` In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment ofthe invention, the hog trough, which may be made of any desired size, is constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material and comprises spaced sides 1 connected by an integral curved bottom 2 and curved upwardly therefrom and constituting the front and rear walls of the trough. The spaced sides and bottom are provided at their end edges with continuous attaching flanges 3, secured by rivets 4, or other suitable fastening devices to the inner faces of end walls 5, and in practice the connected edges of the sheet metal may be crimped or secured together' in any other suitable manner.
The spaced front and rear walls are provided at the top with straight inclined upwardly diverging portions 6, which are connected by a plurality of transverse braces 7, composed of horizontal portions and terminal inclined angle arms 8 having `hoolrshaped terminals 9, which embrace and engage the upper edges l() of the front and rear walls. The inclined angularly `disposed arms 8 are secured by rivets 11, or other suitable fastening means to the inclined portions of the front and rear walls of the trough, and the upper edges `10 thereof may be beaded and reinforced by interior-ly arranged keepers 12. The transverse braces `besides stiffening and strengthening the trough are also adapted to separate the animals and prevent one from interfering with another.
The end walls 5, which are tapered at their upper portions to conform to the configuration of the inclined upper portions of the front and rear walls, are provided at the bottom with tapered extensions 13 forming feet and provided with outwardly extending horizontal attaching flanges lll, secured by rivets 15 or other suitable fastening devices to upper movable hinged bars 16. The hinged bars 16, which extend across the ends of the troughs and project in advance and in rear of the same, are constructed of suitable metal and are connected at their rear ends by hinge joints 17 to lower fixed metallic transverse end bars 18. The fixed transverse bars 18 are arranged upon and secured by screws 19, nails or other suitable fastening devices, to wooden sills 20, which are embedded `in a base 21 of concrete or other plastic material. The sills Patented Nov. 10, 1914.
TIO
hooks 22, secured by pivots 23 upon the upper faces of the front end portions of the movable hinged bars 16 and arranged to engage fixed staples 24, mounted on the lower transverse bars 18 and projecting through slots oi.2 the upper bars 16. The catches are provided between their ends with projecting finger pieces 26 to enablethem to be readily grasped to swing them into and out of engagement with the staples 24e.
l/Vhen it is desired to clean the trough, the pivoted catches are swung out of engagement with the staples and the trough is swung backward'until the rear wall rests upon the base or other supporting surface.
The trough is then in convenient position to be thoroughly and quickly cleaned, and it may be easily maintained in a perfectly sanitary condition.
l. The combination of a trough having curved side walls, and a bottom connecting the side walls, said side walls being pro vided at the top with straight upwardly inclined divergent portions, and a plurality of spaced transverse braces composed of horizontal portions extendingacross the top of the trough and having inclined angularly disposed arms fitted against and secured to the inclined portions of the side walls and rovided with hook-shaped terminals em- -iiracng the upper edges of the side walls, said inclined arms spacing the horizontal @eaten or this patent may be obtained for inlaat/o portions of the braces below the upper edges of the trough.
2. The combination of a trough comprising spaced curved side walls provided at the top with straight upwardly inclined divergent portions, a curved bottom connecting the spaced sides, and ends secured to the end edges of the sides and bottom of the trough and tapered at the top and provided at their intermediate portions with curved edges and having depending extensions forming feet and provided with outwardly extending horizontal attaching flanges, means secured to the attaching iianges for hinging lthe trough at the surface of the ground to permit the trough to be swung rearwardly and downwardly to arrange its rear wall upon the ground, and a plurality of spaced transverse braces composed of horizontal portions extending across the top of the trough, and inclined arms secured to and fitted against the inclined portions of the side walls and spacing thel said horizontal portion of the braces below the upper edges oit the trough.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiXed my signature inthe presence ot two witnesses.
