Application lcil January 10, 1914. Serialio. `811,340.
To all whom t maf concern:
Be it known tlat I, Murrina W. SHER- woon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, Vcnango county,`lfei1nsyl-` Vania,` have invented certain new and usc ful Improvements in Drilli11g-l\/lachincs, of which the following is a specification.
My `invention relates generally to drilling machines and more particularly but not necessarily to rock drills of the hammering piston type.
The object of my-invcntion is in general to provide a simple', eilicicnt and reliable machine of this character, and in particular to improve the construction of the fluid pressure controlled means and associated parts which operate and drive the rotary drill chuck.
Another' object of-iny invention is to provide simple and improved means for connecting together the main cylinder and front head and to combine such means with certain parts cooperating with the said fluid pressure controlled means.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a simple and eilicient packing between the front head ot the machine and the outer end of the drill chuck.
Other novel and advantageous features ol construction and operation will be apparent from the description hereinafter given.
In the drawings Figure .l is a central longitudinal sectional elevation of a drilling machine illustrating one embodiment of :my invention; Fig. 2 an elevation thereof; Figs. 3 and l cross sections on the line 3MB and 4-4 respectively of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 a detail view of the bushing between the cylinderl and the head; Fig. 6 a cross section on the line 6--6 of Fig. l showing the packing at the front end of the drill socket; Fig. 7 a longitudinal section ci 'the lower end of the mam cylinder andthe trout head and drill socket on. a larger scale than Fig. l, and Fig. 8 a detail section illustrating one of the pairl of modified form of clampingr bolts employed. v
Referring to the particular' embodiment ont my invention. illustrated in Figs. 1 to Ll,
my drilling machine comprises a cylinder 1,
a piston 2 reciprocable therein, a striking piece or anvil 3, a front head 4., a bushing 5 interposed between the cylinder` and rthe front head, a rotatable drill socket 6, drill bit or steel 7, the side bolts 8 and cushion springs 9 on said bolts, together with fluid pressure mechanism for rotating the socket comprising a pair of pistons 10 arranged in head and having the ratchet drive connec-I tion with the drill socket as hereinafter c'plained. The piston is operated by mo- (not shown but contained within the casing 12) through suitable ports and passages leading to and from o posite ends of the main cylinder, .but as t lese ports-and passages may be of any suitable arrangeable type well known in tiis art, the same need not be illustrated or described. The bushing 5 which is adapted to fit into the front end of the cylinder and also within the rotatable socket is provided with a central opening in line with the axis of the main cylirider and its piston in order to receive the anvil 3 which conununicates the blows of the piston to the inner end of the drill steel or bit 7. The front head i is cylindrical at its outer end to receive the cylindrical front end of the drill socket which rotates therewitliin. Between the front end ol the socket and the annular shoulder t of the front head is interifosed packing which here consists, as sllpwn in detail in Fig. 6, of a circular washer 13; of '.t'elt or the like and a flat spring;r ift, the construction and arrangement of this packing being such that chips are prevented from getting into the bearing between the head and the drill socket or sleeve As stated the cylinders 1l are formed on opposite sides of: the front head aal the ends of these cylinders are closed b): siniilar caps 15 which tit closely therein but are not screwed in as usual, the same being readily inscrtible and removable. These caps are held in place by means oi yokes 16, the outer ends olE each one ol which are adapted to bear against the outer faces of cylinders 1l. on opposite sides. of the fronttlve fluid controlled by a. distribution valveY ment and as the valve mav be of any suit?
