UNITED STATES PAEENT OFFICE.
GEOBGEG. FLOYD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
. GAB-TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1914.
Application filed June 8, 1914. Serial No. 843,600.
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car trucks and has particular reference to a novel connection between a. side frame and journal box of a car truck.
' In order to maintain the standard coupler high above the rails as required by the Master Car Builders Association, it is desirable that the car body and the trucks should be likewise maintained at the proper height. However, in the use of car Wheels which are turned down after a certain degree of wear fl-f .slot 17. A bolt 20, is adapted to be passed has occurred,'the mass of metal worn o the wheel reduces the heightof the structure superposed thereon. In order to obviate this difficulty I have conceived the idea of maintaining the side frames of the truck at the proper vertical height by inserting one .or more shims underneath the side frame at.
having registering apertures in line with the slot through the lug.
By passing a bolt through the apertures thus formed, the side frame may be raised or lowered as required by the condition of wear of the wheels.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1, a front elevation of 2. Portion of a sid frame carrying a journal box, the parts being constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the side frame showing the journal box in elevation, the parts being 1n the position of original assembling; that 1s, when the wheels are of the full diameter; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but show- .ing the condition of the parts after wear has taken place ing been turned ed between the to compensate the wheels, and, Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the hue 44 of Fig. 2.
' Referring more particularly to the drawings it will be seen that I provide a side frame 10, with jaws 11, between which a journalbox 12, is held, the journal box havng' side flanges '13, coiiperating with the aws of the side frame. The flanges 13, are extended across the top of the box as at 14, and are of increasedheight in order to accommodate one or more shims 15, which may be inserted between the box and the frame. Frojectmg outwardly from the web of the side frame 10, is, a lug 16, having a slot 17, therein, Projecting upwardly from the journal box 12, are ears 18, having registering apertures 19, these apertures when the parts are in position being in line with the through'the alined openings and serves as p a means for preventing separation of the parts in emergencies.
As indicated by the line 21, extending between Figs. 2 and 3, the side frame is maintained at a fixed height irrespective of the reduction in diameter of the wheels such as indicated by the line 22 in Fig. 3, this being constructed of a greater height than the width of their base, this to provide for the insertion of the shims 15 when required. In
the claims I have used the language said flanges being of a height greater than necessary in order to properly engage said frame when said frame is in contact with the box, as referring to flanges of the size just described. Y
I claim:
1. In a car truck the combination of a side frame and a journal box with which said frame coiiperates said box having vertical flanges on its top wall, said flanges being constructed of a height suflicient to properly engage said frame when said frame is separated from the box by the insertion of a shim therebetween, substantially as described.
2. In a car truck, the combination of a therebetween, said shim being held against side frame having pedestal jaws, a journal box adapted to be held between said jaws, said box being provided with vertical flanges on its top Wall, said flanges being construct ed of a height sufficient to properly engage said frame when said frame is separated from the box by the insertion of a shim horizontal displacement by said jaws and 10 the Vertical flanges on the box, substantially as described.
