N4 PETERS. PHOTO-LITMOGRAPMEA WASHINGTON, D, c.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WES'ILY TODD, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOARDS.
Specjcctton forming part of Letters Patent No. 111,585, dated February 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern `Be it known that I, VEsTLY TODD, of the city and county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use` ful Improvement in Wash-Boards; and I do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a wash-board so that its rubbingsurface shall consist of a series of projections resembling that of rasp orI file teeth, and forming a series of horizontal, vertical, and angular grooves.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction.
In the accompanyingdrawings, which form part of my specication, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of myimprovement in washboards. Fig- 2 is a vertical section of the saine. p
In the accompanying drawing, A represen ts the frame of the wash-board, and is of ordinary construction.
The rubbing surface is formed of sheetzinc or other suitable sheet metal, corrugated or provided with a series of projections, B, which are arranged in horizontal and vertical rows, so that a series of horizontal and vertical and also angular grooves in rowsare formed, giving the projections the appearance of teeth or projections resembling rasp or le teeth.
The projections B present four surfaces, Viz., two end and two side surfaces, between each of the projections B, and in the horizontal grooves are small projections C, which present two surfaces.
By the use ofthe hereinbetore-described projections and grooves the clothes, in passing over the rubbing-surface ot' the wash-board, are subjected to a great amount ot friction, whereby the labor of washin g is greatly diminished, and accomplished with ease and facility, and without undue wear upon the clothes.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as of my invention isi A new article of manufacture, viz., a washboard provided with the projections B and C, and with grooves, arranged in the manner and for the purpose hereinbefore described.
VVESTLY TODD.
