PUMP DRIVE-GEARING.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 1914:.
Application fiIedMarch 27, 1914. Serial No. 827,632.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. KLErNoW, a citizen of the United States, residing at North McGregor, in the county of Clayton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Pump Drive-Gearing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improved pump drive gearing, and one in which friction is reduced to a minimum.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved gearing of this nature, so connected between the windmill rod and the pump rod, that the pump rod will operate at a greater rate of speed than the windmill god, say for instance, substantially twice as ast.
One of the features of theinvention is the provision of an improved guide frame, in which the gearing is mounted, there being a rack frame also mounted in the guide frame, and guided thereby.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a large gear engaging the teeth of one side of the rack frame, and having a smaller segmental gear arranged concentrically with the larger gear, said segmental gear being in mesh with a pinion, which meshes with and operates the pump rod.
In practical fields the details of'construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :--Figure 1 is a view in elevation, showing the improved drive gearing operating in conjunctionwith the windmill rod and the pump rod, showing the windmill rod at its limit on its upward stroke, and the pump rod at its limit on its upward stroke, showing the relative .positions of the two. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating the difference between the relative movements of said windmill and pump rods. Fig. 3 isa sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a sectional view on line 4- 1 of Fig. 1.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates the windmill rod having a pitman 2 connected thereto, and which pitman is in turn pivoted at 3 to the rack frame 1. This rack frame is elongated in contour and comprises the side bars 5 and 6,the bar 6 being provided with laterally extending end parts 7 and 8, which are connected adjustably to the side bar 5. Thisadjustable connection comprises the several notches 9,
any one ofwhich ineachofsaid end parts 7 and 8 is designed to engage the bolt 10, and by screwing up the winged nut 11, the adjustable connection is made secure. The side bar 5 is providedwithteeth 11, thereby constituting a side rack bar, the teeth of which engage the teeth of the gear rim 12. Arranged concentric with an integral web of the gear rim 12 is an inner gear rim 16 having gear teeth 15 meshing with the pinion 1 1, with the shaft of which the pinion 3 1- rotates. The two rims 12 and 16 are connected together by the spokes 17 The inner rim 16 has spoke connections with the bearing sleeve 18, which is mounted upon a stub shaft 19 of an arm 20 of the frame 21, which is connected to the windmill frame as shown at 22 and disposed stationary. This frame 21 is constituted as a guide frame owing to the provision of the recesses or notches 23, in which the rack frame is guided, there being metallic straps 24- for holding the rack bars 5 and 6 in said guide recesses.
The pinion 14 is mounted upon a pin 25 which is carried by the U-shaped bracket 26, which is bolted at 27 to the frame 21. This frame 21 comprises the upper and lower bars 28 and 29 bolted at 30 to the end'bars 31 and 32. The pump rod 83 has teeth 34 which mesh with the teeth of the pinion 34. The teeth of the pump rod are held in mesh with the teeth of the pinion 34, by means of the stout coil spring 35, which is interposed between one end of the frame 21 and the guide member 37, in which the pump rod is guided.
The windmill rod'receives" its motion in q the usual manner, and in turn imparts a reciprocating motion to the rack frame, thereby operating the gear rims 12 and 16, and owing to the provision of the inner rim 16 meshing with the teeth of the pinion 14,
which operates the pinion 3 1' (which is der to accommodate gears of different sizes,
so as to change the movement of the pump rod.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination, a stationary guide frame having a U-shaped bracket and provided with a bearing arm having a stub pin, larger and smaller concentrically arranged gears rotating together and mounted upon thestub pin of the bearing arm, a reciprocating rack frame having 'a set of teeth meshing with the larger gear, a pinion mounted in said U-shaped bracket and mesh ing with the teeth of the smaller gear, one
