Definitions
- This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a metallic preparation for dentists use in filling decayed teeth; and it consists in the use of platina covered. with gold, as hereinafter described.
- platina as regards durability and non-corrosive qualities, is as valuable as pure gold for filling teeth, and, bein g much less expensive than gold, numerous efforts have been made to apply it to that purpose; but, from the peculiar structure or arrangement of the fibers of the metal, such efforts have hitherto railed.
- the gold may be melted onto the platinum, or welded 011, or deposited by the electroplate or any similar process.
- Theplatina and gold thus combined maybe rolled or beaten out to the desired thickness, and used for filling teeth the same as pure gold.
- the gold coating gives the filling the same adhesiveness, so that it may be welded cold, and form a durable and perfect filling.
- the gold may be removed by the burnisher of the dentist, if desired.
- the platina surface thus exposed forms a less striking contrast with the tooth than gold alone.

Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD G. KEARSING AND LEONZO KEARSING, OF SPRING VALLEY, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE PREPARATION OF PLATINUM FOR FILLING TEETH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 111,551, dated l ebruary 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD G. KEAR- snve and Interim KEARSING, of Spring Valley, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dental Preparation for Filling Teeth; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a metallic preparation for dentists use in filling decayed teeth; and it consists in the use of platina covered. with gold, as hereinafter described.
It is well known that platina, as regards durability and non-corrosive qualities, is as valuable as pure gold for filling teeth, and, bein g much less expensive than gold, numerous efforts have been made to apply it to that purpose; but, from the peculiar structure or arrangement of the fibers of the metal, such efforts have hitherto railed.
After making many experiments, with a view of rendering this metal available for dentists use in filling teeth, we have discovered that by covering the platinum with gold the object is accomplished.
\Ve do not confine ourselves to any particular process in doing this. The gold may be melted onto the platinum, or welded 011, or deposited by the electroplate or any similar process. Theplatina and gold thus combined maybe rolled or beaten out to the desired thickness, and used for filling teeth the same as pure gold.
The gold coating gives the filling the same adhesiveness, so that it may be welded cold, and form a durable and perfect filling.
When any portion of the filling is exposed to view the gold may be removed by the burnisher of the dentist, if desired. The platina surface thus exposed (being white, or nearly so) forms a less striking contrast with the tooth than gold alone.
By this improvement the cost of filling decayed teeth is materially lessened, while the work is equally solid and durable as it where performed with pure gold.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv Platina covered with gold for dentists use in filling teeth, substantially as described.
