NEEDLE-CARRIER FOR KNITTINGJVIACHINES,
ilpecification of Letters Patent.
laftented Oct. 27, 1914.
Application filed November 16, 1909. Serial No. 528,308.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Louis N. D. WIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the l lnited States, residing in Ogontz, l ennsylvania, have invented certain -l1nprovenicnts in Needle-Carriers for Knitting-Illachines, of which the followin; is a s 'iecification.
My invention relates to that class of knitting; machines in which are employed a plurality of of needles operated by cams in dillerent planes, the object of my invention being to lessen the weakening of the needle carrier which has heretofore been caused by the cutting therein of the grooves for the guidance ol the needles. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being bad to the accompanying draw ing, in which- .i ig'ure l is a vertical sectional view of part oi the cylinder of a knitting machine constructed in accordance with my inven tion; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the sanic'on the line (r -a, Fig. 1.; Fig. 3' is a horizontal section on the line 5-7), Fig.1; Fig. l a vertical section of part of another form oi needle cylinder embodying my in vcntion; Fig. is a face view of part of the same; Fig. (3 is a horizontalsection on the line --c, Fig. 4, and 7 is a horizontal section on the line (Z, Fig. al.
in machines of the type to which my invention relates, it is custon'lary to cut deep grooves in the cylinder, dial or other needle carrier, for the guidance of the needles, in order to provide a proper side bearing for that portion of the needle upon which the butt is formed. The cutting of these deep grooves in the cylinder or dial materially weakens the same, especially in machines of fine gage. in these machines, two sets of needles are usually employed, one set being shorter than the other and havingtheir butts actuated by knitting cams located in one plane, he longer needles having their butts actuated by knitting cams in a different plane from those which actuate the short needles.
My invention consists in cutting the deep grooves only in that portion ofthe needle carrier which corresponds to the extent of reciprocating movement of the needle butt and latch-carrying portion of the needle, consequently the grooves for receiving the longer needles can, throughout a large portion of theirextent, be shallow, and the weakenlng of the needle carrier by the formation of these grooves in it can be correspondingly lessened,
In the needle cylinder shown in Fig. l, the grooves for the shorter needles in are deep throughout, as shown at 1, but the grooves for receiving the longer needles 7 which alternate with the shorter needles, are deep only in their upper and lower portions, as shown at 2, these portions of the grooves corresponding to the extent of reciprocation of the bnttsand latch-carrying portions of said long needles, but the remaining portions of the grooves in which the stems of these needles travel being shallow, as shown at 3 in Fig. 2.
To facilitate the cutting, by the usual. milling tool, of the grooves which are partly deep and partly shallow, the cylinder is made in two parts l and 5, the upper part 4 having, in alternation, deep grooves for the guidance of the needles a: and shallow grooves for the guidance of the needles 1/, and the lower portion 5 having deep grooves for the guidance of the needles 2/ only, whereby each groove can be formed by a through out of the milling tool from end to end of that portion of the cylinder in which the groove is contained.
In that embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 the lower portions of the needles y are guided in the same grooves 1 which serve for the guidance of the short needles :0, the face of the lower portion of the cylinder being recessed, so that the stem of each long needle can be bent laterally, as shown in Fig. 5, in order that the upper portion of said stem can be guided in the shallow grooves 3 which alternate with the deep grooves in the upper portion of the cylinder.
I have shown my invention in connection with the cylinder of the machine but it is evident that it can be applied as Well to'the dial of the machine.
I claim 1. A knitting machine needle carrier having therein needle guiding grooves-. whose bases, in those portions corresponding to the latch-carrying and butt-harming portions of the needle stems guided thereby, are ,in the same longitudinal plane, and 'WllOSEfbhSQS in those portions corresponding to the inter mediate portions of the heedle stems guided thereby are in a different and higher longitudinal plane.
2. A knitting machine needle carrier having needle guiding grooves therein, the bases ofthe grooves corresponding With the latchcarrying and butt-carrying portions of the needle stems being in the same longitudinal plane-end the bases of the guide grooves for 10 3. A knitting machine needle carrier having alternate deep and shallow grooves whereby it isndapted for use with a needle having its butt-carrying portion guided in and bearing upon the base of the deep groove and its main stem guided in and bearing upon the base of the shallow groove.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscrihing witnesses.
