Description
L. P. VERBEROKMOES.
WATOHOASE GROWN.
APPLICATION FILED FEB-17,1912.
Patented Oct. 27, 1914.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS F. VERBERCKMOES, OF ANACONDA, MONTANA.
wn'ronoasnonown.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS F. VnRnnRcK- MOES, citizen of the United States, residing at Anaconda, in the county of Deerlodge and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \VatchcaseGrowns, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in watch case crowns.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of watch case crowns, and to provide a simple, practical, and efficient means for enabling the watch crowns of various watch cases to be easily and quickly connected with the winding stems of various watch movements by watchmakers, in assembling the movements and the cases after the same have left the factories where they were made.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :F igure 1 is a sectional view of a watch case crown constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a winding stem. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the crown member. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the crown post. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the upper portion of the winding stem. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the crown post. Fig. 6 isa similar view of the crown member.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a watch crown member provided in its under side with a cylindrical recess 2 having a horizontal upper wall 3 adapted to have secured to it, by soft solder or other suitable means, a crown post 4, for enabling the crown member 1 of a watch case (not shown) to be connected to the winding stem 5 of an ordinary watch movement, (not shown). The crown post consists of a tubular portion ,6 and an attaching flange or head 7 provided with a flat Specification of LettersePatent.

upper face 8 to fit the fiat top wall 3 of the recess 2 of the crown member. The head or attaching flange 7, which is preferably circular, as shown, is designed, in practice, to be made of a standard size or diameter, and to be trimmed down to enable it to fit within the recesses 2 of the crowns of various watch cases. By this construction the crown post may be easily and. quickly applied to watch cases provided with crowns of different sizes having recesses of different diameters.
The tubular portion 6 of the crown post is provided with an interiorly arranged socket 9 adapted to receive the reduced threaded upper end 10 of the winding stem 5, which is provided with a shoulder 11 formed by reducing its upper portion and located at the lower or inner end of the said reduced threaded portion 10. The shoulder 11 forms an abutment against which the lower or inner end of the crown post is secured in assembling the parts. In practice, the crown posts are designed to be constructed with threaded sockets of difierent diameters and threads to correspond with the threaded stems of various standard watch movements, so that in assembling a watch movement and a watch'case, it will be only necessary, in order to connect the crown with the winding stem, to select a crown post having a threaded socket corresponding with the reduced threaded portion of the winding stem. If the head of the selected crown post should be of a size greater than the recess in the crown member, it may be trimmed off to fit the same in the manner heretofore explained. By this construction the winding stems of various watch movements may be easily and quickly connected with the crowns of various watch cases by an ordinary watchmaker, after the cases and watch movements have been received by a jeweler. By engaging the inner or lower end of the crown post with the shoulder of the winding stem, it is unnecessary to extend or carry the winding stem upwardly into engagement with the crown member, and as shown in the accompanying drawing, the threaded portion of. the stem terminates short of the attaching flange or head, which closes the upper end of the tubularportion of the crown post.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a winding stem having a threaded upper portion and a shoulder, and a watch crown provided in its underside with a recess," of an. interchange said crown post having a socket of a diameter and threads correspondlng to those of the 10 threaded end of the wlndlng stem.
able crown post consisting-of a tubular portion provided with an interiorly threaded socket for receiving the threaded portion of the windin stern and abuttin a ainst the 'said should er, said crown po t l eingv also LOUIS VERBERGKMOES' head adapted to fit the upper Wall ofthe re- W. H. MAHONEY,
provided at its upper end With an attaching Witnesses: cess in the crown and be secured to the same, i L. M. FLANAGAN.
