GAS PACKING HEAD.
APPLICATION FILED DEO.20.1913.

Sffouun UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
I LAWRENCE E. ROBINSON, OF COFFEYVIILLE, KANSAS.
\ GAS PACKING-HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27,1914.
Application filed December 20, 1913. Serial No. 807,873.
To all whom it mai concern Be it known that I, LAWRENCE E. Ron- INSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coffeyville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented provide a head which can be adjustably mounted upon the drive pipe so as overcome the disadvantages now existing in having to cut and thread the pipe in order to mount the head thereon.
Another and further object of the invention is to provide a head which is so constructed that the same is mounted upon the drive pipe and casing in such a manner that a tight joint is obtained between the respective members in order to prevent the gas from escaping around the drive pipe or casing; said head being provided with gas outlets by which suitable pipes can be connected for conveying the gas to the desired point.
Another and further object of the invention, is to provide a head which is especially adapted to be used in connection with tho telescoping packer when the well is being bored through different strata of earth containing gas and water.
Another and further object of the invention is to provide the head with a neck member detachably mounted thereon in such a manner that the same can be easily and quickly detached in order to substitute a neck member with a bore of a larger or smaller diameter to receive the casing.
Another and still further object of the invention is to provide a segmental frustoconical gripping ring having serrated faces for engaging the drive pipe or nipple in order to fasten the head in its adjusted position thereon, without cutting the drive pipe, thereby enabling the head to be readily placed in position at the desired height.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved construction of gas packing head; Fig. 2, is a vertical section through my improved construction of head showing the application of the same to the casing and ,drive pipe in position within an oil well showing a telescoping packer in expanded position upon the casing; Fig. 3, is a top plan view of the head; and Fig. 4, is a section taken on the line -14 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a well casing arranged in position within a well havinga telescoping packer 2 adjacent its lower end for closing the well at the desired point between the different strata of gas and waterbearlng sand; said packer having a shoe 3 resting upon the shoulder at the bottom of the well as clearly shown.
Surrounding the casing 2 at the upper portion thereof, is an ordinary driving nipple or drive pipe 4. which is placed in position within the well and extends upwardly beyond the surface thereof. The above description is given so that the operation of my construction of head when placed in position upon a drive nipple and easing, can be readily understood.
Slidably mounted upon the upper end of the drive pipe i is :1 depending sleeve portion 5 of the cylindrical head (3 which is provided with suitable gas outlet nipples 7 to which, pipes can be connected for conveying gas to the desired point. Mounted upon the depending sleeve portion 5 of the head 6, is a collar 8 which is provided with a frustoconical bore portion 9 at its lower end in which is mounted a segmental frustoronieal sleeve 10 formed of a series of sections having serrated inner faces for gripping the drive pipe 4 when the collar is moved upon the sleeve 5 of the head, as will be later described.
Mounted upon the segmental sleeve is a cast iron ring 11 on which is arranged a ring of packing material 12 which is compressed by the lower end of the sleeve portion 5 of the head 6 against the outer face of the casing 41; in order to form a gas-tight joint.
The head 6 is provided with an annular groove 13 in its top in which is seated a lead ring 1 1; which is engaged by a neck member 15 which is provided with a central bore 16, the upper end thereof being surrounded by an annular recess 17 forming a ,pocket for a ring of packing material 18 which is compressed therein around the easing 1 by the boss 19 of the cap 20 which is V compress the segments of the ring 10 against the drive pipe 4,1 provide the outer face of the coller 8 with oppositely'disposed bifurcated lugs-2 1 which are provided with pockets 22-in'their under faces in which are adaptedgto be seated heads of bolts 23 which extend upwardly parallel with the head and neck member 15' and are provided with nuts 24: engaging the upper faces of the neck member15 so as to. compress the lead ring 14 which forms a gasket in order to prevent the gas from escaping from-between the head and neck member. 7
The cap 20 is rovided with an annular upwardly projectlng flange 25 and with oppositely disposed slits 26'through which the bolts 23 pass and mounted upon these bolts, are nuts 27 arranged within the annular flange 25 in such a manner thatafter they have been tightened in order to force the boss 19 against the packing, and to draw the collar 8 upon the sleeve 5 of the head 6 so as to compress the segmental ring, they will be prevented from moving outwardly by the flange 25.
In the drawing, I have shown the drive pipe or nipple l arranged within the head at the most desirable point, but it is of course understood that the head can be adjusted vertically upon the end of the drive pipe as the pipe can extend upwardly within the head so as to properly fosition the head in respect to the surface 0 the ground upon the drive pipe, Without cutting the ipe.
By this construction, after the drive pipe and easing have been placed in position, the head can be quickly adjusted upon the drive pipe and by tightening the nuts 24 and 27, the same will be clamped firmly thereon so as to form a gas-tight joint between the casing and drive pipe.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a gas packing head for oil well casings and drive pipes,
which is provided with means for locking the head in its adjusted position upon the drive pipe and means for forming a gastight joint around the casing. It will also be seen by the construction set forth in this application, that the compression collar is adjusted upon the head by bolts and nuts performing the double function of compressing the gasket between the interchangeable member and head and the gripping members, the ca being ca able of being removed inde en ently of t e neckmember. It will also e seen that the head is formed hollow and that a clearance is formed therein in order to allow the drive pipe to be ex lar in respect'to said head for moving said gripping .members into contact with said driving pipe.
