Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that 'I, CLYDE AMBERT PIP- PIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Weldon, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Collapsible Go-Cart, of which the following is a full,-clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is'to provide a simple, strong and inexpensive collapsible gocart which when collapsed will be in the shape of a receptacle, incloslng all the parts of a gocart, which receptacle will be convenient to carry and attractive in appearance. I obtain the above object by providing a goo-art the seat and back of whlch are parts of a receptacle into which the other parts of the gocart are foldable.
The invention consists of the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and fully set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of th s spec1fication, in which like characters lndicate corresponding parts'in all the views and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the position of different parts when placed and folded into the backv and seat before the back and seat are folded together. Fig. 3 shows the appearance of the gocart when the same is folded completely; Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section throughthe gocart as in use; Fig.5 is a fragmentary section through the seat when in use on line 55, Fig. 4.; Fig. 6 is a section on line 66, Fig. 2; and Fig. 7 is a perspective View of an end of a pole section.
Referring to the drawings, 9 represents the'seat of the gocart, formed of a box of any suitable. material and open at the bottom. The corners of the box are preferably reinforced in any suitable way, so as to make the structure of the box more solid. V-shaped brackets 10 are pivotally secured with their open ends to the sides of the seat structure 9. The other end of the V brackets is provided with a lateral extension 11 on which is rotatably mounted a w'heel' 12. To maintain the brackets carrying the wheels in operative position, each of the brackets is provided with a link 13 pivotally mounted in the bracket adjacent the lateral extension,
which link in turn is connected by a knuckle o1nt I l-to a link 15, also pivotally secured to the bottom of the box forming the seat. To prevent thelinks 13 and 15 from collapsing in their knuckle joint when the wheels 12 are placed in operative position, one of the links 15 is provided with a loop 16 pivotally secured thereto with its open end, while the closed end of the loop is adapted to engage a notch 17 in the other link, thereby preventing the movement of the links in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 5. y i
A back 18 similar in shape and struc ture to the seat-9, but not as deep, is hinged to one end of the seat by means of double hinges 19 in such a way that the open end of the back can come in contact with the open end of the seat, as shown in Fig. 3; or the exterior surface/of the closed end of the back 18 can come in contact with the exterior surface to the end where the back is pivoted, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. To maintain the back 18 in fixed relation to the seat 9, guards 20 are used, which are pivotally mounted with one end in brackets 21 provided within the back 18. Each end of the side guards 20 engaging the brackets 21 is bent at right angles to the guard, so that when the same is moved on its pivotit takes the position shown in Fig. 1 or Fig. 4, or the position as shown in Fig. 2. The length of the bent end is such as to bring the major part of the guard 20 against the bottom of the back 18.
The free end of each of the side guards is provided with a notch 22 adapted to be engaged by a pin 23 secured on the sides of the seat 9. A turnbutton 24: is also provided on the sides of the seat 9, so as to prevent the disengagement of the notch 22 from the pin The engagement of the notches 22 with the pins 23 maintains the back 18 in fixed relation to the seat 9.
To manipulate the gocart, the front of the seat 9 is provided with a socket 25 into which fits one end of a sectional pole 26. Each of the sections of the pole is provided at one end with a pin 27 while the opposite end is provided with a socket 28 having a tri-square groove 29. The socket 25 is also provided witha similar groove. A spring 30 is secured on the socket with one end of said spring engaging the longitudinal portion of the groove 29, and thereby forming locking means for the pin 27 engaging the groove. The section of the pole 26 which engages the socket 25 is provided with a member 31 pivotally secured to said section adjacent the end engaging the socket. This member 31 forms a support for the gocart. To prevent the support or member 31 from moving on the pivot when in operative position, the same is provided with a notch 32 engaged by a U shaped member 33, the free ends of which are bent at right angles in a plane with the sides of the U member and pivotally mounted within the seat 9 at the edge of the front end. The length of the bent portions of the sides of the U-shaped member 33 is such that when said member is folded inside the seat 9 it comes in contact with the bottom thereof. The U-shaped member 33 is locked in the notch 32-by means of a turn button 34 pivotally mounted on the support 31. Additional supports 35 are provided adjacent the rear of the seat 9 and pivotally secured thereto. To maintain said supports in properposition, each of the same is provided with a member 36 pivotally secured with one end to the support while the opposite end is pivotally secured within the back 18. This pivotal connection .of the members 36 with the supports 35 permits the movement of the back on its hinges when folding or unfolding the gocart.
The gocart is folded as follows: The turn button 34 is displaced to permit the support 31 to move on its hinge on the sectional pole. This will permit the folding of the U-shaped member 33 into the seat 9. The pole 26 can then be removed from the socket 25, taken apart, with the support 31 folded against its section of the pole. The side guards 20 are then disengaged from the seat 9 by turning the turn buttons 24 so as to permit the disengagement of the notches 22 with the pins 23, thus permitting the folding of the side guards 20 into the back 18, and also giving the freedom of movement to the back 18 on its hinges 19, where it can be folded into position shown in Fig. 2. The back 18 is preferably provided with members 37, whereby the side guards can be locked in position so as not to rattle or move when folded within the back. When the seat and back are placed inposition as shown in Fig. 2, the sections of thepole can-be placed within the seat. The loop 16 can then be forced out of the notch 17. thus permitting the links 13 and 15 to collapse, thereby causing the brackets 10 to fold into the seat 9, covering the U- shaped member and the sections of the pole, with the wheels superposing one another. As seen from Fig. 2, enough space is 'left between the rims of the wheels and the sides of the seat for the supports 35 to fold in when the back 18 is made to close the seat 9, as shown in Fig. 3. The front end of the seat is preferably provided with ahandle 38 by means of which the so-formed receptacle can be carried, and also with locking means 39 for securing the rear to the seat.
As can be seen from the drawings, when my gocart is folded, the receptacle formed as shown in Fig. 3 is smooth exteriorly; there is no part that can come in contact With the clothes of the carrier, nor can any part of the device unfold accidentally, as every part of it is inclosed within the receptacle formed by the seat 9 and the back 18.

The surfaces of the seat and back which come in contact with the person engaging the same can be padded, if desired, in any suitable way.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a collapsible gocart, a seat; a back; hinges connecting the said seat to the back, said seat and back forming a closed receptacle; side guards connecting the back and seat and pivotally secured to the back and foldable thereinto; wheels secured to the seat and collapsible thereinto; and a sectional pole associated with the seat and adapted to be stored in said seat when the gocart is collapsed.
2. In a collapsible gocart, a seat; a back; a double hinge connecting said seat with the back, saidseat and back being adapted to form a closed receptacle when the gocart is collapsed; side guards connecting the seat and the back for maintaining the same in fixed relative position to each other, said side guards being foldable into the back; wheels secured to the seat and collapsible thereinto; a sectional pole associated with the base; and rear supports secured to the seat and back and adapted to collapse into the said seat when the gocartis collapsed.
3. In a collapsible gocart, a seat; a back hinged to the seat, said seat and back being adapted to form a closed receptacle when the gocart is collapsed; side guards pivotally mounted in said back and whereby said back is connected to said seat and maintained in a fixed predetermined position; V-shaped brackets pivotally mounted in said seat; a wheel on each bracket, said wheel and brackets being adapted to fold into said seat; means for maintaining said brackets in operative position; and means forming supports associated with said back and seat and foldable into said seat when the gocart is collapsed.
4. In a collapsible gocart, a seat; a back hinged to said seat and adapted to form with said seat a'closed receptacle when the gocart is collapsed: means for maintaining the seat and back in relative fixed position; V-shaped brackets pivotally mounted in said seat; a wheel on each bracket; pivotally connected means connecting the brackets with the seat; locking means for said pivotally connected means whereby said brackets are maintained in operative position; and means pivotally connected to the seat and back forming supports and adapted to be folded into said seat. when the gocart is collapsed.
5. In a collapsible gocart, a seat; a back; a double hinge connecting said seat to the back, said seat and back forming a closed receptacle when the gocart is collapsed; side guards pivotally mounted in said back; means on the seat for attaching said side guards thereto whereby said seat and back are maintained in a relatively fixed position; V-shaped brackets pivotally mounted in said seat; links having a knuckle joint connecting each of the brackets to the seat; means associated with the links to prevent their movement at the knuckle joint, whereby said brackets are maintained in operative position; a wheel for each bracket; a rear support pivotally attached to the seat; a memberpivotally secured to said support and to the back, said support being adapted to be received in said seatwhen the gocart is collapsed; a sectional pole associated with the seat for manipulating the gocart; a front support pivotally mounted on said pole; and means for maintaining said front support in operative position, said means being foldable into said seat when the gocart is collapsed.
6. In a collapsible gocart, a seat and a back adapted to form a closed receptacle when--.the gocart is collapsed; side guards connecting the seat and the back and foldable into the said back; wheels secured 'to the seat and collapsible thereinto; a rear support associated with'said back and seat 40 and collapsible thereinto; a sectional pole removably associated with said seat; a front support pivotally secured to one of the pole sections; and a U-shaped member pivotally mounted in said seat and adapted to engage 4 said front support whereby the same is maintained in operative position said U-' shaped member being foldable into said seat, and said sections forming the pole being adapted to be received in said seat when D. W. IBENHOUR.
