Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
Application filed December 2, 1913. Serial No. 804,135.
Be it known that I, ARoHm L. Jones, a citizen of the United States, res1d1ng at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Soap-Boxes, of which the following is a specificat on.
This invention relates to dispensing devices and more particularly to soap dispensers.
The principal object of the invent on is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character particularly adapted for use in public lavatories and such places and which is adapted to cut from a bar of soap, and dispense the same, a slice of soap of sufficient size for one person.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying.
drawings which form a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig.2 s a vertical sectional view; Fig. 3 is a simllar section taken at right angles to Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on the line 4E4l of Fig. l; and, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the drawer and knife removed from the casing.
In the specified embodiment of the invention, as illustrated herein, 1 represents a casing which, in this instance, is formed preferably from a single sheet of material, the bottom 2 of which is bent up and soldered to the sides 3. These sides form an extension on the back and the front 4 forms an extension on one of the sides and has its free edge soldered to the opposite side as will be readily understood.
The front 4 is provided with an aperture 5 which is produced by stamping out a portion of the front and extending it in to provide a supporting ledge 6 upon which the lower portion'of the soap dispensing drawer or tray is slidable. This tray has its rear end bent upwardly and forwardly as shown at 8, and then bent rearwardly on a line parallel with the bottom of the tray so as to form guide arms or fingers 9 which travel in the guide ways 10. secured to the inner side of the sides 3, and also to form a cutting edge 11 which cuts the slice from the cake of soap as will be hereinafter described. The forward edge of the tray or drawer is bent upwardly to form a closing plate 12 which closes the aperture 5 when the tray or drawer is in retracted position.
Connected to the flange 12 and depending at their rear ends to a connection with the tray 7, are soap supporting members 13 which support the soap when'the drawer is in retracted position and are arranged in a plane slightly below the plane of the knife 11. These members are so arranged with respect to suitable soapguiding strips 14 carried by the sides and back of the casing that the edge of the cake of soap 15 will just be engaged therewith when the trays are wholly within the casing. The guide strip which is connected to the back of the casing, has its face flush with the cutting edge or blade 11 when the latter is in inoperative position.
' Journaled in the lower portion of the easing, below the drawer or tray, is a shaft 16 whichprojects considerably below the side 'of' the casing at one end where it has secured thereto an operating lever 17. Between the sides of the casing, the shaft has secured thereto a pair of arms 18 their free ends being connected to a link 19 and to a shaft 20 secured to the rear end of the tray or drawer so that, when the shaft is rotated against the tension of the spring 21, which surrounds the shaft 16, the drawer will be projected as will be readily understood and when the lever is released, the spring 21 will act to retract the drawer. The top-of the casing is closed by a hinged lid 22 which is locked in closed position so as to prevent the unauthorized removal of the cake of soap.
In the operation of the device, a bar of soap is placed in the casing between the guiding strips and resting upon the supporting members 13. When the shaft 16 is operated against the tension of the spring, the tray or drawer moves forwardly and the knife edge or blade severs or cuts from the lower end of the bar a slice of sufficient size for the use of one person. This drops into 0nd slice, to be out therefrom. If desired, any suitable type of coin-control mechanism may be employed to control the operation of the device so that it will be necessary for any one desiring the soap to deposit a coin before being able to operate the lever.
What I claim is:
1. A. soap dispensing device comprising a casing, a drawer slidably mounted therein, soap supporting members carried by the drawer, means for actuating the drawer, and a knife movable with the drawer and arranged in a plane above the soap supporting members.
i. In a soap dispensing device, a Casing, a drawer slidably mounted therein means for actuating the drawer, soap supporting members carried by the drawer, and a knife carried by the drawer and movable therewith, said knife being arranged in a plane above the soap supporting members and adapted to support the cake of soap when the supporting members are inactive.
A soap dispensing device comprising a casing, a drawer slidably mounted in the casing, a cutting blade formed on an integral part of the drawer, and soap support-.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
4:. A soap dispensing device comprising .a casing, a drawer 'slidably mounted in the casing, said drawer having an upwardly and forwardly bent rear portion and a rearward extension on the upper edge of said portion, a cutting edge formed at the juncture of said portion and extension, andsoap sup porting devices carried by the drawer and arranged below the cutting edge.
5. A soap dispensing device comprising a casing, soap guiding strips spaced from the casing, a drawer slidably mounted in the casing, a knife carried by the drawer, soap supporting members carried by the drawer and arranged below the knife and projected inwardly beyond the vertical plane ofthe strips, a cutting blade carried by the drawer and arranged beneath one of the strips when the drawer is in retracted position, manually operated means for projecting the drawer, and a spring for retracting the drawer when the manually operated means is released.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
