HYDRAULIC TURBINB.
APPLIGATION FILED DB0. 24, 191s.

Specification of'letters Patent.
HYDRAULIC TURBINE.
Patented oct. ac, i914.
Application 4tiled December 24, 1913. Serial No. 808,910.
` To all whom t may concern This invention relates to improvements in' the construction of hydraulic installations and is especially applicable to hydraulic turbine installations of the Francis, direct-coa,
nected, vertical shaft type.
An object of the invention. isto provide a hydraulic installation which is simple in construction, efiicient in operation, and whichnmay be installed at minimum cost.
One of the more speciic objects of theinvention is to provide a simple and suitable support for the dynamo .electric machine above the hydraulic machine, Without sub# jecting other turbine elements to endanger'-`- ing conditions such as excessive Weights. Another obJect of the inventlon 1s to provide suitable struts for directly supporting' the dynamo electric machine of a hydraulic installation from the foundation, these struts being formed as guide vanes which oder the least obstruction to the fluid passing the struts while entering or leaving the hydraulic' machine. y
While the invention as disclosed is applied to an installation in which a direct connected Francis turbine and electric gen- ,cratorvare embodied, it should be understood. that the invention is equallyfapplicable to centrifugal pump installations in which thc driving motor is located above the pump and is direct connected thereto. y
A 'clear conception of an embodiment of thc invention may be had by referring to the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this s peciiication, in which like reference'characters designate the same or similar parts in the various views.
Figure 1 is a top viei'v partly insection, of a Francis type hydraulic turbine installation. l Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectionl throughan installation of the type disclosed in Fig. 1, the section being taken along the line' lI-l/lf of Fig. 1 looking in the direction oi the arrows. i
.The Francis turbine runner "6 is direct connected with the dynamo electric machine' or dynamo 9 by. means of the vertical main shaft 7. T he runner G is housed in a suitable turbine casing 1'5r which has the-main shaft bearing 8 formed in one therewith, and which has its Weight supported directly upon the foundation through the foundation plate 14e. The discharge end of the. runner 6 Vconnects with the discharge yfiume 12, which in turn connects with ,the usual tailrace not shown. The mvable guide vanes 5 are mounted in suitable bearings formedinl the stationary turbine casing 15 and are adapted to cont-rol the flow of water to the runner 6.l The guide Janes 5' are operable by means of the usual guide vane actuating mechanism 11. The stationary guide vanos 4 are formed in the speed, ring which is secured to the casing l5 in the usual manner. The turbine inlet casing;l which is disclosed as a sheet n'ietal spiral casing 1, forms a pressure inlet chamber 13 which connects directly with the speed ring 'and turbine inlet opening. The guide vanes 4,'55 are so formed that they direct the Water entering therunner'G from the chambeil 13, toward. the runner at the proper angle.
The dynamo electric machine or generator 9 is supported upon a suitable lower frame 1() provided with suitable supporting pads at its lower end.v The struts 3 are arranged in a circular series being formed as directing or guide vanes for the Water passing through the turbine casing, andv are provided at their upper and lowerends With suitable pads. The'pads at the lower ends of the struts 3 coact directly With thefoundation plate 14;, While the ppads at the upper ends of the struts coact directly with the pads at the lower end of the frame 10. It will thus be noted that the Weight of the generator 9 is carried directly by the foundation 2 through the strut-s 3 without subjecting other turbine elements to excessive Weights. Theforma# tion ofA these struts 3 as directing or guide Vanves furthermore assists in 'preliminarily ico properly 'directin the Water admitted to the ioe 13 past the struts 3, stationary vanes Li, and A,
movable guide vanes 5, and through the run# ner 6 to the discharge [lume 12. 'lhe power generated by the turbine is controlld by means of the usual. `guide vane actuating mechanism. ll which positions the movable guide vanos While the invention as disclosed shows a sheet metal spiral casing l, 5 it should be understood that the provision ot u direct support for the dynamo electric inachine through the struts may he applied to any other type of casing, such as castl iron, concrete or'other forms generally used. lt o should also be noted that While the struts 3 are shown in the present ,disclosure as being entirely independent of vthe casing l, these struts may le ornied directly in one with and as a part of the casing l.
it should be understood that it is not de'- sired to be limited to the exact details ct construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to 'a person sliilledin the art.
`lt is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent,-
L'In a hydraulic machine, a casing for ,conducting a luent medium, a foundation supporting said casing, means carried by 25 said foundation and extending through said casing, and a dynamo electricrn'iachine carried, by said means. a A y l 2. ln a hydraulic machine, a casing for conducting, a 'fluent medium, a foundation Se supporting said easing, struts carried by said foundation and extending through said casing, and a dynamo electric machine located 'above said casing and supported by said struts.
3. n a hydraulic machine, a casing for conducting a Huent medium, a foundation supporting said casing, a runner'within said casing, a dynamo electric machine connected to said runner and located above said casing,
'119 and means passing through said casing for `supporting said dynamo electric machine upon said foundation.
il. In a hydraulic machine, a casing, a
,foundation supporting Said casing, a runner Within said casing, means for directingl `iiuent medium 'from the interior of said ing through said easing for supporting.,r said dynamo electric machine upon said oundation, said supportmg means being' formed to direct iuentmiedium trom Within said cas- `ing toward said runner.
5. In a. hydraulic machine7 a casing, a foundation for *supporting said casing', a ruimer Within said casing, a dynamo electric machine direct connected to said runner and located above said casing, and 'means adapted to guide iluent medium from the interior of said casing; toward said runner and supporting the weightot said dynamo electric machine upon said foundation, said means passing thrcuuh said casino.
6. In a hydraulic machine, a sheet metal casing, a 'foundation supporting said casingg,
