citizen of the United States, residing atv in the county of Cook and State Chicago,-
have invented a certain new and of Illinois, useful Improvement in Valves, following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valves, and has for its `object to provide a new and improved device of this description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in part section illustrating one form of valve embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2`1of Fig. l; Fi is a sectional yview taken on line 8-3 o Fig. 2.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several gures. In the drawings the valve is illustrated as applied to a faucet. In this construction there is a body portion' 1 having an inner holloa7 `seat portion 2 which acts as a valveseat `for the valve4. This valve has a stem "3, projecting into the hollow seat portion 2.
The valve has .a gasket 5 which engages the seat. The hollow seat cates with the exterior of the body portion 1 by a lateral communicating portion. The valve 4 is opened by being tilted so that one side is lifted from the seat 2. As herein shown, the valve is'eontrollcd by the exterior handle 6 connected with the rotatable part 7 mounted in the holding part 9 which is removably connected to the body portion 1 by being screw-threaded into the lateral connection by which the hollow seat portion is connected with the-'exterior of the body portion. The rotatable part 7 is provided with an enwhich is eccentric 'with relapart 7 is rotatediengages the valve stem 3 and tilts the valve to open it. The holding part 9 is provided with a washer 10 and a removable cap 11. provided with a spout 12 and a'removable cap 13 with which is associated a washer or gasket 14. When the valve-,iis closed the parts are in the position shown-in thedrawing. When yit is desired to open the valve the handle G is rotated. This rotatesthe-rotatable part `7 and causes the eccentric engaging part to move until. itengages the stem 3. The valve is then tilted so as to be opened and the liquid may thenflow therethrough.

I prefer to have the parts arranged so that the handle need not be brought back to any particular' position to close the valve. As,
shown in the drawings the valve will bel closed v while the handle is moving through, say, approximately one-third of its travel. If, for example, the handle is in the position shown in Fig. 1, it may be moved to either side -to open the valve and must be moved a considerable distance before the valve begins to open. The valve then opens gradually, and when the handle is moved back, closes, but it will be seen that the valve closes before the handle reaches the position shown in Fig-1. This insures the closing of the valve, as it is not necessary to bring the handle'to any particular point, but simply to 'bring it within a certain range of its movement. It will therefore be seenv that there is here provided a seit-'closing valve which closes and opens under pressure, as the pressure above the valve is the pressure o the water in the pipes, there being suiiicient space between the valve 4 and the body portion to permit the water to pass above the valve.
It will further be seen that the controlling part for the valve is on the discharge side of the valve, the parts projecting through the body portion on this side of the valve, and hence there is no tendency to leak, because of the lack of .pressure at this point, there being normally no water that could leak out when the valve is closed.

A valve device comprising a tiltingvalve, a stein connected therewith, an engaging device for said stem, a rotating part with whichy said engaging device is eccentrically connected and adapted to be 4rotated in either direction, said engaging device engaging the' stem to engaging the stem to release the valve when rotated continuously in WHJLM E.
