Description
P. T. vv/111111111. A l COBL'BINIID BACK BUTTON AND TIE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 31, 1912.

COMBINED BACK ETTCN AND TIE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
Application niet August a1, 1912. serial No. 718,011.
To all 'whom z't-may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC T. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of thecity of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements in Combined Back Buttons and Tie-Holders;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to the numbers ofreference jmarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined tie holder and back button for collars `and more particularly to the class of back buttons adapted to be engaged in the back button hole of a collar and then slippedbeneath the collar band on the shirt.
Serious diflicul-ty is often encountered in properly tying a four-in-hand tie when used in connection with the turn down collar now in vogue. This is due to the fact that the tie slips up into the top of the collar andis there frictionally held in position by the neck band and down turned. edge of the collar which bear against each side of the saine. When this occurs the natural tendency of the wearer is to pull upon the ends of the tie to slip it around to the desired position. This cannot ordinarily be accom-A plished, however, unless the tie be jerked violently and Without danger of injury to the fabric in the tie for th'e reason that pulling upon the ends of .the tie serves merely to bring the neck band and down turned edge of' the collar more closely together and bind the tie more firmly between the same.
Itis an object of this invention topro-4 vide a combined back button and tie holder adapted to engage the back of a collar to the neck band of a shirt and prevent the tie from sliding up in the collar.
lt is a. further object of the invention to afford a device of the class described which maybe stamped from a single strip of metal.
It is finally an important'object of this invention to afford a combined back button and tie holder which will be of cheap, simple and durable construction.
The invention relates to the matters hereinaf'ter described and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device embodying my invention, illustrating the manner in which it is used. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the device shown in Fig. 1. lFig. '3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 and illustrates a modification of the construction shown in Figs. vl and 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the de'vice shown in Fig. 3.
As shown in the drawings: 1 indicates a shirt, 2, a neck band therefor, and 3, a collar having a neck band4, and down turned edge 5.
As shown in Fig. 1, the device embodying `my invention comprises a strip or plate of metal having one end thereof rounded and struck to afford an inner relatively narrow tongue 6, which is bent outwardly and then downwardly at approximately its center to afford a ldownwardly `directed hook 7, provided with a rounded end 8. The metal on each side of the base of the inner tongue 6, is bent inwardly and then downwardly to a point approximately opposite the outer edge of the -bodyportion 9, of said strip orv plate of metal and is then bent inwardly and upwardly and parallel with the inner tongue 6, to afford a U-shaped hook 10.
As shown in Fig. l, the device is attached to the collar with the tially vertical position parallel with the neck band 4, of the collar, the lower edge 11, of which ris engaged between the downwardly directed portion 12,'of the U-shaped hook and the outwardly bent portion v13, of the body portion 9, of the strip of metal. The U-shaped hook 10, Vis then slipped; in position beneath the neck band 2,01. the shirt, the tie 14, engaged in the ring or guide afforded bythe tongue 6, and thedownwardly directed hook 7 and the free ends of the collar secured to the neck band of the shirt in the usual or any desired manner.
The modification illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 is substantially identical with the construction described, and, as shown'in said figures, comprises a strip or plate of metal which is somewhaty reduced in width at one of its ends and said narrow end is bent outwardly and then downwardly for a short distance and then outwardly and back parallel with the downwardly directed portion 16,
It is obvious from the construction de scribed that the modified device illustrated may be applied toengage the back of the collar to the neck band of the shirt in the same manner that has been previously described in connection with the preferred form of my invention, and the tie may be y slipped through the slot in the ring or guide 19, or may be threaded thereinto, as desired.
It is obvious from the construction described that details of the invention may be varied without departing from the princiles of this invention, and that many modications of my device may be accomplished by one skilled in the art to which this inapplication otherwise vention pertains. I thereforedonot purpose limiting the patent issued upon this than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the class described, comprising abody portion, a downwardly directed tie -engaging hook formed integral therewith on one side thereof, a downwardly directed hook formed with said body portion cn the other side thereof and adapted to be inserted through the button hole of a collar, and an upwardly directed hook forming a continuation of said collar engaging hook and adapted to be engaged beneath the neck band of a shirt.
2. A device of the class described, formed from a strip of metal, and comprising a body portion struck nearone of its ends to afford an upwardly directed tongue which is bent to 'afford a downwardly directed hook, strips of metal'on each vside of said tongue bent in the opposite direction and downwardly parallel with the body portion of the stri and then outwardly and upwardly an connected at their ends to afford a looped U-shaped hook.
In testimonyv l,whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name' in subscribing witnesses.
FREDERIC T. WAGNER.
