" SPRING-C1413.
Specification of letters iatent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
Application filed fiovember 21, 1913. Serial No. 802,292.
1 '0 all whomit may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS I. A. TOMA- snx'r, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Clips, of which'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to springs, and more particularly to spring cllps.
One of the principal objects of the .IIIVBII- tion is to provide an auxiliary springer spring clip to be attached to a leaf spring for keeping the leaves in place, and to augment the resiliency of the leaf spring.
Another object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary spring of the class described which will be simple in construction, strong and durable, efficient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the figures, of which Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of one end of a leaf spring, showing the 1nvention as applied thereto, Fig. 2 represents a top elevational view of a leaf spring showing the invention in place thereon. Fig. 3 represents a vertical transverse sectional plane indicated by the broken line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the outer end of the second leaf 5 of an ordinary leaf spring is enlarged, and is provided with a transverse bore through which extends a bolt 6 for securing in place a substantially inverted U-shaped clip 7, which comprises a. central rounded portion 8 overhanging the top leaf 7' of the spring in spaced relation thereto, and downwardly bent arms 9 extending in parallel relation to each other and at right angles to portion 8, and which have their lower ends flattened and enlarged as at 10 and provided with Letters Patent is openings through which bolt 6 extends,
whereby the cl'p is secured in place on leaf 5. the bolt being headed on one end and pro vlded with a nut on the opposite end to keep the arms tight up against the leaf spring. An auxiliary spring 11 is interposed between leaf 7 and clip 7, and said spring comprises a strip of spring material substantially the samewidth as the leaf spring, having its ends turned up as at 12, said strip being bowed outwardly adjacent the upturned ends as at 13, and bowed inwardly between the out bowed portions, as at 14, the inwardly bowed portion 14 at its central point hearing I 8 of the clip, and the curvature of the inwardly bowed portion '14 which engages portion 8 of the clip, is of substantially the same curvature as portion 8 so that spring 11 will be held in place longitudinally of the leaf spring, and will be prevented from slipping at its ends laterally thereover. It is evident that spring 13 will keep the spring leaves 5 and 7 in place all the time and that it will tend to prevent breaking of the spring leaves, and at the same time will give, as the leaf spring gives, thereby aiding the resiliency of the leaf spring.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts thereof, as do not depart from the spirit of the invention, .and' the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I'claim as new The combination with a leaf spring, of an inverted, substantially U-shaped clip connected at its ends to one of the leaves, and at its central portion overhanging a second leaf, said second portion being rounded, and a strip of spring material interposed between the second leaf and clip, said sprin bearing at its ends against said second lea and being bowed inwardly at its central portion, said inwardly bowed portion being of a curvature equal to the curvature of the rounded portion of the clip, and engaging against the rounded portion and desire to secure by said rounded portion said strip on each side 1 relative to said second leaf than the overof the inwardly bowed portion being bowed hanging portion of the 011p.
outwardly from the center of the strip to i r the secondleaf engaging parts, whereby the Z FHOMAS rlOMASlNI' strain on said strip is distributed, said out- NVitnesses:
wardly bowed portions at their highest P. A. PIODER,
points being positioned at a greater distance R. D. EMMONS.
