SEPARABLE BODY-BOLSTER.
Figure l is a top plan view of a separable body bolster of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of my improved bolster and showing the center sill with which said bolster is combined, in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and showing the end' sill of a car underframe and the draft sills, which are positioned between the ends of the center sills and said end sill.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken approXi mately on the line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 18 an cnlarged cross sectional view taken approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a view of the underside of the separable center bearing plate forming a part of my improved bolster.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in separable body bolsters, that is, a body bolster" having a portion which can be easily and quickly applied or detached so as to permit the bolster to be readily combined with the center sills and draft sills of a car underframe.
The principal objects of my invention are to construct a simple inexpensive body bolster of cast metal and to form an opening or openings through the central portion of said bolster for the accommodation of the center sills of the underframc; to provide a. readily detachable center plate which spans the opening or openings iii the bolster, which plate is provided with a center bearing, and further, to provide a simple, strong and rigid car underframe construction including my improved separable body bolster, center sills, and draft sills, which construction can be easily assembled, or in the case of repairs can be easily taken apart.
To the above purposes, my invention con sists in certain novel features of construction Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed m 16, 1913. Serial No. 768,051.

and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and-claimed.
As shown in the drawings, my improved separable body bolster is combined with a pair of center sills, each comprising a vertically disposed web plate 10, to the upper and lower edges of which are fixed angles 11, the same being arranged so that their larizontal flanges are outwardly presented. Positioned on top of the center sills thus formed and attached to the horizontal f anges of the upper pair of angles 11 is a cover plate 12. The Web plates 10 of the center sills are provided in their ends with longitudinally disposed slots 13 for the accon'imodation of the' top flange of the body bolster. This body bolster is preferably cast in a single piece and comprises a Verticall y disposed web 14, a top flange l5,'and Thus said bolster is substantially of I-heam shape in cross section.
The central portion of the body bolster is preferably depressed with respect to its ends so that the tops of the sidesills 17 of the under-frame to which the ends of the bolster are attached occupy sul'istantially the same horizontal plane With the top plate 12.
Formed integral with the web 14 at the center of the bolster is a vertically disposed hollow cylindrical housing 18 with the bottom of which is formed integral a depending lug 19. The top flange 1.5 above this housing 18 and the lug 19 are perforated to receive a king bolt. Formed through the web 1% of the bolster near the center thereof an equal distance from the housing 18 are openings 20 which accommodate the lower por tions of the center sills when the bolster is properly positioned on said center sills.
The sin-ls 13 in the web plate 10 of the center sills are, in length, approximately twice the width of the top flange of the body bolster, and thus when said body bolster is properly positioned on the center sills the ends thereof project a short distance beyond the body bolster.-
' Formed integral with the web 14; adjacen. to the inner edges of the openings 20 are web plates 21 which are arranged at right angles to the web 14; and these Web plates bear dily against and are fixed to the webplates it i the center sills.
Formed in theunderside of the bottom flange 1 6 adjacent-to the openin s 20 are recesses 22 which receive the en s of the separable member forming apartof my improved bolster. This member comprises a plate 23 which is adapted to be applied to the underside of the bolster beneath the center sills, and formed integral with] the underside of this plate is a center bearing 24 which is perforated to accommodate; the king pin. The upper portion of this plate is provided with an annular' recess 25 which accommodates the lug 19 that is formed on the underside of the housing 18.
5 Formed integral with the ends of the late 23 and on top thereof are transverse ri s or lugs 26 which, when the plate is properly applied to the bolster, bear directly against the shoulders atthe inner'ends of the recesses 22, thereby providing efiective ties beneath the openings 20 and forming an interlocking connection between the endsof the plate 23y and the lower portioii'of the'bolster outside said openings, and which construction resists anytendency of the bolster to break or fracture above the openings 20 when the ends of said bolster are ackod up to permit repair or removal of a truck. The ends of the plate 23 bear directlyeagainst the 30 shoulders at the outer ends' of the recesses 22 and by such construction the plate 523 performs the functions of a compress-ion member to resist abnormal load strains imosed on the outer poJ-"tions of the bolster.
he ends of this separable plate are detachably connected to thebottom flange 16 of the bolst-zc by means of fastening devices 27, such as bolts or rivets. Theend portions of this plate spans the spaces beneath the 40 openings 20 and when the parts are properly assembled said plate is attachedto the horizontalfianges of the lower pair of angles 11 by means of rivets or like fastening devices. 1
WVhen the bolster is properly combined with the center sills a pair of draft sills 28 which are preferably channel-shapcd ir .eross section are attached directly tot-he projecting portions of the web plates 10 and I the angles II by means of rivets or like tastening'devices. the rear ends oi which dra'l't sills bear directly against the front edge of the top-flange 1a of the bolster. The outer ends of these draft sills are attached in any suitable mariner tothe end sill 2!) ol the car underframe.
The'body bolster is preferably formed with integral side hearing members 30 and with projecting plates 31 which receivenail- 1n strips. j j
hen my improved body bolster is combined with-the center sills and before the draft sills are attached to said center sills it ispreferablc, althoughnot necessary, that recta'ngular filler plates 32 are located against ,sills' to the center sillspass directly through :constitu-les a strut between the central p I claim: 1
