BED.
siding at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This dIlVQIllilOl'l relates to beds, couches and structures used for sleeping purposes, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a bed structure that can be folded into an alcove, recess or compartment of a wall, whereby it will present a neat appearance and allow floor space to be used for other purposes.
Another object of this invention is to provide a wall bed structure that can be easily and quickly placed in position for use and swung at a desired angle relatively to its support for the convenience of the user.
A further object of this invention is to provide a metallic bed structure consisting of comparatively few parts that are easy to assemble, strong and durable, and highly eflicient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in thenovel construction, combination and arrangementof parts 7 to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now to the draw-g y The bed frame can be shifted longituings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of the bed inan eX- tended position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in an upright folded posit on housed by a wall; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bed in an extended position and.

A bed struoturein accordance With my invention comprises substantial tubular up rights 1 providedwith webbed feetj. 2, said uprights and the feet thereof constituting" the base orhead supportof the bed structure. The upper endsoftheuprights l are bifurcated or slottcd,.as at. 3, the slotsexarmsa. ofua transverse brace 5. The side arms 4 are pivotally mounted in the upper ends of the uprights lby-transverse bolts6 or other pivotal meanfsyand the brace 5 of said side arms constitutes a weight to counter-balance andfacilita te adjusting thebed structure. I i p Suitably secured upon the side arms 4 and extending outwardly therefrom are longitudinal parallel channel members 7 connected, intermediate their ends, by trans verse parallel angle, bars 8. Revolubly mounted in the channel bars area plurality head and foot pieces, 12. 11 are preferably madeof angle bars and of spaced anti-frictional rollers 9 that ext nd above thesides of said members and i l; i ovably supp a bed frame, comprisi side rails 10, head andfoot rails 11, and Therails 10 and thehead and foot rails 11 are adapted to support. a conventional form of bed spring 13. a
5 0 p U a dinally of the members 7 and the. inner ends of said members are. provided with'guards l tadapted toover-hang theside rails 10 of thebed frame, when said frame is in a retracted position, and. prevent lateral dis- 'lplacement of said frame. The transverse i vided'with sockets 15 to receive the ends of thesiderails 10 whenthe bed frame is in a retracted position. 1The;side rails 10 have ment with the members 7 "when the bed frame is placed: in a retracted" position.
5 Theguide rails 10 of the bed frame, inter- ;mediate their ends; are connected by transverse parallel angle bars 17 and riveted or I otherwiseconnected to said bars is aplate :18 provided .with a depending tapering tongue19. The tapering tongue 19 is love E brace5 has the ends thereof recessedor protailed, as at 20 and said tongue is adapted to I wherebysaid tongue cannot become vertirevolubly supported guards 16 out of engage cally displaced relatively to the socket 21. The lubly mounted upon a plate 23, carried by the transverse angle bars 8 connecting the members '7. This construction is best shown in Figs. 5 and 11 where it will be observed that the confronting faces of the plates 22 and 23 are provided "with ball rac'es for anti-frictional balls 24;." The plates 22' and 23 arecircular in plan and the plate 22 is relatively to the plate 23b-yfa screw bolt 25. constitute a turn table or swivel for the bed frame, and after the bed frame has been shifted to an extended position, with the ment with the suppo-rts 7 and consequently the side rails out ofe'ngagement with the guards 14-, the bed frame can beswung in a horizontal plane at I an angle relatively to the supports 7:
in engagement with the plates by a I with the supports 7, the roller--15 rides To preventthj'ei tongue '19 from becoming accidentally displaced" relatively to the socket 21, when the bed frame has been swung out of a linement with the supports 17, the plate 23 is provided with inclined waysg litand supported by said plate is a roller having aspindle 4-6. The roller 15 extends into a slot 47 provided therefor in the plate 22', and said rollercis retained i strike plate48 securedupon the plate 22. When the bed frame is swung out of alinement p one of'the'ways it m the plate 23 and consequently projects through the slotted strike plate 48 behind the'tongue 19, said roller locking 'the'tongue within the socket 21. Ihe' bed frame cannot therefore become acf the supports 7.
" frame is The side rails 10' of the bed frame have the outeren'ds thereof provided withpivots edlegs 26 that can be swung into par-allelism with ftheside rails '10, when the bed placed" in aretracted position.
The outer ends ofthe'supports 7 are connectedby side pieces 27 to a panel or mirrorii28 that has the opposite end thereof supported by the side arms 4 of the transverse brace 5. Pivotally' connected to the pos tion; 1
engage in a tapering dove-tailed socket 21,.
socket 21 is carried by a plate 22 revo -riedby the bed structure.
; 8 and 12, illustrating a with channel side I rollers 33. The plates 22 and 23 7 Sid shifted to a retracted bed structure can be swung to a vertical position in the compartment. In this instance, the side arms 32 i 36 having a telescopic extension 37 which is connected to the outer end of the bed frame 34-. Sections or portions of the frame formciclentally displaced relatively to the swivel 1 arms of the 1 tate raising 5 cal position It will also be :may be arranged in a like manner to fold f sidewise instead of edgewise as shown where the wall space is adapted for such an arfrangement and where so arranged the bed imay be lowered, then pulled out laterally and turned to the desired position. A single fupright or pedestal may ;the uprights 1, and while in the drawings there are illustrated the frontcof. the uprights 1 there is located a panel or wainscoting 31 which closes the lower part of the compartment 30 and the other part of said compartment is adapted to be closed by the panel or mirror 28 car- It is therefore impossible to detect the presence of the bed 7 structure when the com )artment 30 is closed.
Reference will now e had to Figs. (3, 7,
invention. The uprights 1 are provided arms 32 having revoluble Movably supported upon the rollers 33 is a bed frame 3i and the inner end ofsaid bed frame has depending hangers 35 that engage under the side arms 32 I and prevent the bed frame 3% from becoming accidentall y displaced relatively to the The bed frame 34: can be easily position, whereby the support a mirror or panel ing part of the mirror panel provide legs 38, which can be easily and quickly swung Into position to support the outer end of the bed structure when the same is lowered to a horizontal position.
A further modification of my invention is illustrated in Fi 's. 9 and 10, wherein side arms 39 are provided with semi-cylindrical rails 40 supporting anti-frictional balls 11. Movable upon the balls 11 are tubular side rails 42, of a bed frame, said side rails being held relatively to the rails 10 of the side arms by straps 43, carried by the side arms 39 and coeperating with the socket of the transverse brace of said side arms in preventing the tubular rails 42 of the bed frame from becoming accidentally displaced.
From the foregoing it will be observed jthat I have devised a novel bed structure that can be advantageously used in small rooms or compartments, especially where the room or compartment is used for other jpurposes than sleeping. quickly swing the bed structure into a horizontal position, whereby It is possible to it can be safely used, and the weight connecting the side structure is adapted to faciliand placing the bed in a vertiunderstood that the structure be used in lieu of preferred embodimodification of my within the compartment 30.
