To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES P. DANKS,

a citizen of the United Statesfresiding at Lawrenceville, in the county of Lawrence and State of Illinois, have invent-ed'certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting and Deodorizing Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and.

exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a disinfectingand deodorizing device particularly adapted to be used in toilet bowls and the like, and r the invention has for its object to provide a removable disinfecting and deodorizing device to be removably placed and automat1- cally held in proper position within the toilet bowl, the same beingarranged in such manner that upon flushing of the bowl the same is deodorized and disinfected.

With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction of the coils and their co-acting parts so arranged and constructed to receive a filling of absorbent material which is first saturated with a disinfecting, antiseptic and deodorizing preparation, the character of the said preparation being immaterial as far as this invention is concerned.

Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a toilet bowl partly in section illustrating the invention in operative position therein. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the rim of a toilet bowl illustrating the device in proper relative position, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the spiral members of the device, the parts being broken away in order to enlarge the view.

Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which 1 1 indicates the device which com rises the long main coil 2 and the short auxiliary coil 3, said short auxiliary coil 3 having its ends secured to the main long coil 2 in the manner as shown in'Fig. 1. Along the outer side of the long coil 2is a metal spring 4: which spring is passed longitudinally through the coil 2 and being bent back upon itself passes longitudinally of the coil 2 on the outside thereof in such manner that the spirals 5 of the coil 2 are received within the two sides 6 and 7 'ofthe spring 4. In order to maintain the spring 1 in proper position a plurality of clips 8 are arranged at intervals thereon in the manner as shown in the accompanying drawing. The two

,rial which is saturated with a suitable de odorizing, antiseptic and disinfecting preparation before the device is applied to the bowl 10, after which the two end metallio caps 11 areapplied to the ends of the main coil inthe manner as shown in theaccompanylng drawing to properly retain the absorbent material 9 thereln.

Having thus described the severalparts of this invention its operation is as follows:

The device being ready for application to the bowl the same is insertedunder the top edge or rim 12 thereof which, in modern plumbing devices of this character, is provided with a flush water passage 13 which communicates with the bowl 10 by means of openings or ports 14in such manner that upon flushing the bowl the water is led thereto at points around the edge thereof. The device being thus applied in themanner as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the natural spring tendency of the main coil 2, which is enhanced by the spring 4 as heretofore described, securely holds the device in proper position within the bowl as will of course be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawing. The short auxiliary coil 3, however, being secured to themain coil 2, becomes bowed or curved in a direction contrary to the opening or curvature of the main coil 2, thus maintaining the auxiliary coil 3 within the bowl andagainstv the bottom thereof. It will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 1 that the auxiliary coil 3 upon bending or bowing, as shown in Fig. 1, causes its ends-15 to lie fiat against the surface of the main coil 2 parallel with a tangent of the said main coil 2, thus the main coil acts as a head or cap for the auxiliary coil 3 to effectually prevent displacement of the absorbent material therein. The device being thus applied, upon flushing of the bowl the water comes in contact first with the main coil 2 and then with the auxiliary coil 3 in such manner that the ends of said main coil, a metallic spring? embracing the said main coil longitudinally thereof and lying opposite to said auxiliary coil, a suitable filling of absorbent material for said main coil, and a suitable filling of absorbent material for said auxiliary coil,v said mam C011 and said auxiliary 0011 beingoppositely bowed when in operative positlon, the surface of said main coil formlng a closure for the ends of said auxiliary coil,

substantially as described and for the pur poses setforth.

2. A device of the character described inf eluding a main coil, a relatively short auxiliary coil connected thereto intermediate the ends of said main coil,a suitable filling of absorbent material for said main coil, and a suitable filling of absorbent material for said auxiliary coil, said main coil and said auxiliary coil being oppositely bowed when in operative position, the surface of said main coil forming a closure for the ends of said auxiliary coil, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.

8. A device of the character described including a main coil, a relatively short auxiliary coil connected thereto intermediate the ends of said main coil, a suitable filling of absorbent material for each coil, the said two coils being adapted to be oppositely bowed in such manner that said auxiliary coil extends into the space encompassed by he bowed main coil substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
