` a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa- .nying drawings, and to the letters and f iguresl of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to ventllators, and more particularly to a device of that type which is adapted for confinement wrthln an opening in a window sash., the principal Iobject of the present invention being to provide a ventilator of this type having an adjustable door member for regulating the air intake and having screens for filtering the air during its passage through the ventilator. In accomplishing this object, I have provided the improved details ofstructure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Wherein:-
Figure I is a perspective View of a window sash equipped with a ventilator constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged cross-section of the sash andfventilator. Fig. III is a detail perspective view of the outside ventilator box. Fig. IV is a. similar view of the inside box. Fig. V is a vertical section of the sash on the line V-V Fig. II. Fig. VI is a similar view on the same line, but looking in the opposite direction to show the front box from the rear. Fig. VII is a detail view of part of the back box showing the screen lip. Fig. VIII is a similar view of thefront box showing t-he clip for the front. screen.
Referring more in detail to the parts: l designates a window sash having an opening 2 extending longitudinally therein. Ex-
tending into the opening 2 from the outside' of the sash is a box '3 having an opening 4 extending longitudinally in its lower portion and having closed ends 5, the inner edge of the upper portion of the box having a depending lip 6 forming a trap 7 for the rear screen, and the lower end of the box having vertical corrugations 3 n which the ventilator may be drained, when drainage is required. Rising from the l with through lower edge of the box is a icurved deiector 8 which terminates about the center 'of the box, and has a back-turned lip 9 Which is slit at intervals throughout its length to provide lips 10 which are curved forwardly of spring clips for supportlng the rear screen and holding same in place. The rear screen comprises a frame l1 which is adapted to project through the opening between the upper box lip 6 and the `forward edge of thedeflector 8, so that when its upper edge is in the corner of the box, its lower edge can be sprung over the clips 10 to seat on the back-turned lip 9 and on said clips.
Seated in the front of the opening 2 is a box 12 having an opening 13 throughout substantially its entire length and wldth the l lower edge of the box being slit to form the lips 14- which are turned forwardly and upcurved to support a front screen 15. The inner edges of the box at the ends of the opening are also slit and turned back to form the lips 16, for engaging the ends of the screen when the latter' is projected into the box. Between the lips 16 and the ends of the box are vertical slots 17 through which the friction latch plates on the front door are projected, as will presently be described.
i he box l2 is held .within the sash opening by a collar 18 having horizontal fianges 19 overlaying the inner faces of the box 12, and vertical fianges 20 which project over the face of the sash at the edges of the opening 2, the exposed flanges being provided with apertures through which screws, or the like, may be projected into the sash to hold the collar in place. The upper horizontal flange 19 of the collar is slit in line the lips 14, and turned downwardly to form the upper spring clips 22 for holding the upper edge of the front screen. As the front screen is held in place by the lips 14 and 16 and clips 22, past which the screen is projected'to gain its seat, I providethe screen with iinger holds 23, preferably constructed as lips, formed integral with and projecting inwardly from the ends ofthe screen rim in front of but spaced from the screen, so that a person wishing to insert or remove the screen may grip the finger holds and thereby easilyhandle the screen.

Fixed to the inner face of the door adjacent the ends thereof are the latch plates 28, which are substantially triinto and travelthrough the slots 17 at the ends of the inner box 12. Near'the edge of eachplate 28 is a stri 29 which is septhe plate by a slot 29'- and has outwar projecting corrugations 30 adapted to wipe the inner faces of the ends of the kee er collar,so that they will frictionally hold the door at-any adthe plates projecting beends ofthe sash opening when the door.. is closed. I also prefer to provide the door 26 witha damper plate 31 whichA may be manipulated by a knob 32 which projects through the door to the outer face thereof.

Y' inner screen is then projected through the inner NAface of the opening and the lips 14 and 16 and spring gain its seat over the opening in the inner box. The front door may then be inclined to regulate the amount of draft therethrough and deflect the air upwardly into a room, or the door may be entirely closed and the Vintake of air regulated by means of the damper. By having the outer screen set at an incline above the stationary deector, dust thrown upwardly by the stationary member will be deflected against pushed past the back of the trap and fall back through the opening in the rear box.

The combination with a sash having anopening therein, of a box projected into said opening from the outerface of the sash, and having a closed upper portion and open lower portion, an upwardly and inwardly curved delector projecting into the box .from the bottom of the open lower portion thereof, and a screen supported on the upper edge of the deector and bearing against the upper portion of the box.
4. The combination with a sash having an opening therein, of a box projected into lthe opening from the outer face of the sash and comprising an open lower portion hav ing an inwardly and upwardly curved delflector entering the box from the bottom of said. opening, and having inwardly and outwardly extended lips on its 'upper edge, the said box comprising a closed upper portion having a ange within the sash above the inner edge of the deflector forming a restricted opening, and a screen adapted for projection through the restricted opening and supported in an inclined position by the lips on the deflector and outer closed portion of the box.
5. In a ventilator, the combination with a sash having an opening therein, of a box in the outer portion of said opening having a lower mouth and an inwardly and upwardly curved deiector, the upper portion of said defiector having an outwardly facing lip and inwardly facing clips, and a screen supported on said lip and yieldingly held by said clips, substantially as set forth.

In a ventilator, the combination with a sash having an opening therein, 0f a box seated in said opening and having an inner and upper screen aperture, and a lower and outer intake port, the edges of the box facing said aperture being slit and bent to form supporting and keeper lips, and a screen seated on the supporting lips and yieldingly held in place by the keeper lips, substantially as set forth.
8. In a ventilator, the combination with a sash having an opening therein, of a box located within said opening and having a screen aperture, the box at the edges of the aperture being slit and turnedoutwardly to form keeper lips, a collar inclosing the edges of said box and having backwardly turned clips, a screen adapted to seat on lower box lips and to push past the collar clips to coversaid aperture, and inwardly turned finger holds on the ends of said screen, substantially as set forth.
