specification ime m Patented Oct. 13, 1914.
Application filed september30, i913. Seria1. 1[o.792,6 41.
To all whom it may concern g Be it known that I, MIOHAL KOLTONSKI, a
subject of the Emperor ofRussia, residing" at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of, which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding boxes, and more particularly to a box or crate that can be advantageously used for shipping eggs and other matter that require separate.
compartments.
The primary object of my invention isto provide a collapsible or foldable boxhaving novel collapsible partitions that permit of the box being folded to occupy a comparatively small space in storage or during re turn shipmen y g Another object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable folding box consisting of comparatively few parts that present a rigid structure when setup.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive folding egg box that has novel hinges-that permit of the box being compactly held when knocked down.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construc-. tion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be ings, wherein 1 Figure 1 is a plan of the box, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same in a set-up position, Fig. 3 is a similar view of the box in a folded position, Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the box in a set up position, Fig. 5 is a similar view of the box in a folded position, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective view of portions of partitions used in connection with the box.
A folding box in accordance with this invention comprises a rectangular base plate 1 that has the edges thereof provided with permanent end walls 2 and permanent front and rear walls 3 and 4. The end walls 2 are of a greater height than the walls 3 and 4; and said walls are braced relatively to the bottom plate 1 by corner pieces 5.
Hinged, as at 6 to the permanent fron wall 3 is a foldable front wall 7 having the outer side thereof provided with a staple 8,
zontal openlngs 11 and countersunk in the outer had to the draw spaced transverse partitions 29.
the permanent front wall also has a staple "8?. Hinged to the rear "wall 4:, as at 9 is a foldable rear wall 10 and the walls 7 and 10 are adaptedto fold inwardly upon a horiplane. 1 The hinged rear1 wall 10..has
side of said wall, at said openings are plates 12 that are slotted, as at 13 to provide hinge rods or pivots 14. Hinged to the end walls 2, as at 15 are foldable end walls 16 and these walls are adapted to fold inwardly upon the hinged front and rear walls 7 and 10. l 1 f The reference numeral 17 denotes a lid that isprovided withangle corner pieces 18 .and these pieces fit downwardly over the upper. edges of the walls 7, 10 and 16, to brace said walls when The front edge of the lid 17 has a hinged .hasp 19 to engage overnthe'staple 8. The rear edge of the lid 17 has angle straps 20 terminatingin hooks 21 adapted to engage the rods Fig.4.." a
The permanent rear wall 4 has plates 22 and rods or pivots 23 to receive the hooks 21 when the box is folded and in order that the lid can be used, as shown in Fig. 5 it is necessary that said lid have an opening 24 to provide clearance for the staple 8 of the hinged front wall 7. a
The reference numerals 25 denote a plurality of horizontal partitions and hinged to said partitions, as at 26 are longitudinal equally spaced partitions 27 provided with equally spaced slots 28 to receive equally The partitions 29 are slotted, as at 30 whereby the partitions 27 and 2 9 can be fitted together to provide a plurality of compartments. The partitions can be easily collapsed and placed one upon the other as shown in Figs.
3 and 5 whereby when the box is folded it will present a rigid and durable structure.
The box can be made of wood and the trimmings of metal, or any other suitable material can be used throughout the construction of the box.
One embodiment .of the invention has or pivots .14, as best shown in in a set up position.
been illustrated, but it is to be understood 1 that the. structural elements are susceptible to such variations andmodifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A folding box comprising a bottom having permanent end, front and rear walls secured permanent front walls adapted to receive saidhasp, corner pieces secured to said lid, horizontal partitions having hinged longitudinal partitions secured thereto and detachable transverse partitions adapted to interlock the said hinged partitions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
